View Full Version : Loaner question: What does the dealer normally give you?

Dropped off the 2003 H2 I bought (private party) at the original dealer where it was bought for service.
They gave me a Buick Lesabre through the Enterprise on scene.
Is this normal?
It's an H2/Cadillac dealer. Kind of expected more because it's under warranty. Am I being a picky bitch? Or is that lame?
What do you usually get for a loaner?

My Buick smelled like an orthapedic shoe. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I can't believe you said that! "Smelled like an old lady?" LOL!!!
They used to give me a Suburban or pickup, then they gave me a sh---ty Cadillac, last time it was a Trail Blazer only after I refused to drive a Grand Prix. Loaners must get smaller over time.
Two weeks ago, instead of getting an old lady loaner, I tried out a 2002 Mercedes G55 AMG. Went and got the hubby for lunch! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Call GM customer service and let them know about that. I'm sure things will change pretty quick.
The dealer is supposed to give you another GM vehicle of comparable size and value as a loaner. Don't let them stiff you or put you in some crappy little econo-box coffin.

Dropped mine off today, and got a Bonneville. I was made fun of by my passenger that it was an old persons car. I asked for a Cadillac STS, but the only other thing they had was a Pontiac Vibe http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif.
So, I opted for the Bonneville.
I normally get either a Trailbazer or a 4door Cadillac. No complaints...as long as I don't get a Vibe!

H-TOO. Just wanted to point something out. One of the perks of buying a vehicle new is
loaner cars. Many dealerships don't give out loaner cars except to those who bought it new from them. That may be why you were dissapointed with your car. Just something for everybody to keep in mind though, loaner cars are a huge expense for service departments, and if they become better with time, you're just going to be paying for them on the other end, if you know what I mean.

Hummertech - it depends on the dealer. We bought both our trucks new from the same dealer. If I take the H2 in, I get Enterprise. If my husband takes his Escalade in, he gets an identical Escalade as a loaner. The dealer has made it clear that they have no future plans to offer H2s as loaners.
As far as loaners from Enterprise, you CAN call ahead and request an SUV. I usually do so when I make an appointment with the dealer - just tell them you'll need a loaner and want an SUV. I've had an Envoy and a Trailblazer before. Not an H2, but it's better than a Buick.

In many dealerships loaners are a product of the sales office and not the service department. I've never done the rental car thing but have always gotten demos from the dealers I bought my vehicles from and that always goes through the sales office. As Hummertech pointed out, this generally is a buyer perk not a perk of just bringing your vehicle there for service.
Of course some dealerships might offer more service than others but, as stated, you are going to end up paying for it any way one way or the other.

I understand that the dealer might be more accomodatign to me if they knew I bought the car there. However, while it was not purchased by myself at this dealer.... the prior owner did by it there. That should mean something. Not alot. But, something.
Really, the Buick wouldn't be a big deal if we weren't getting 10" of snow tonight.

I've had everything from a Trail Blazer to a Caddy CTS. I know the dealer I'm at now doesn't really offer loaners except for a warranty job over a couple of days.

I would say that from my experience working for highline dealerships and seeing which direction that Hummer is going with extending its warranty, the Alpha line, and also asking new and some existing dealers to do Hummer only dealership points(no other franchises) that they will also eventually put H3's into loaner service. I think the dealerships will be similar to some of the Landrover dealerships (luxury off road).

Be careful on how far you push the issue. You wouldn't want the dealer to take anything out on you. Just a word of advice.

I always get a Trailblazer http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
The SUT is going in this afternoon for a handfulf of warranty items. I asked the service guy for a loaner and he said he'd reserve me a Tahoe or Trailblazer. That's fine with me.
Next he says "GM will only pay for 3 days of the loaner, after that you have to pay." Does that sound right to you guys? I suspect the SUT will be there for a few days & don't want to pay for the rental if I don't have to.
BTW, I didn't buy it from them.

I had a Deville for over a week, when the dealer said my H2 was ready one morning I told them it was inconvenient for me to get up there until the following day (hour drive) – they said no problem. Heck, I didn’t even buy the truck there, guess some dealers are just http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.giftighter than others.

I would think that if it is under warranty, then they shouldn't charge you for a loaner, regardless. If they tried to charge me for a loaner after 3 days, I would tell them where to stick their loaner http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.
Update -
Check the SUT into service and start with the loaner process. Service writer on the phone:
"What do you have for cars? Where's the Tahoe? What about the Trailblazer? ..... Ok, pull that up."
A minute or two later he points out the window to a purple minivan. I laughed at him and said "Im not driving that. What else do you have?"
Drove away in a green Malibu, pissed. The thing stinks so bad I can smell it on my clothes today at work. I emptied a bottle of Febreeze in it before bed, left the windows down all night, and it didnt touch the stench. There are spent matches on the drivers floor where someone apparently was lighting smokes and throwing them on the floor. There are other unidentifiable odors which could be coffee, chili, or something I don't want to know about.
Its unwashed, unvacuumed, I had to clean the inside of the windshield since I couldnt see crap in the sun from the smoke haze, and the front marker light is out and people can't tell if I'm turning. The thing only has ~9000 miles on it too!
What would you all do? They better fix my truck FAST....

Its in for a handful of warranty things.
The major problem is the last time we had heavy rain the overhead console got water in it and it dripped water onto the dash. The water made a bee-line for the NAV slot and screwed up the display for a few days. Its dried & working fine now but... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
Mirrors stopped folding correctly.
Muffler shield popping noise.
Control door in the ventilation system not opening for feet.
Steering column noise.
Passenger side blows high heat sometimes regardless of setting.
Wiper module upgrade.
That's it. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Still love the truck!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You could speak to your service department and/or rental company directly and explain the situation to them and see if they have any other vehicles available now. When I took my vehicle in for warranty work several months ago, I got a PT Cruiser, which I think wins the award for the worst rental vehicle I was ever given. I called the rental company the next day, and they had a Grand Prix available, which was like night and day compared to the PT Cruiser.

the H2 dealer In Grand Blac doesn't give loaners.
the caddy dealer I bought my Gmc Truck from did, and so did the one Ann Arbor that wrecked my GMC truck...they had it 30 days(ripped a hole in the box side hitting the building 10 days in). I took it in for the trans, but it wasn't right, so it went from there to the selling dealer for another 11 days. I had two loaners for a total of 31 days...free. and yes the selling dealer fixed the truck.

I just got the brake recall card last week and made an appointment for last Monday to have that and the oil changed (Mobil 1).
Got a Caddy CTS, then a phone call from the service advisor to say they could not do the brake recall as they did not have the correct tool. I'm going to have to go back again.
It's funny though as when I asked my salesman originally what was the program for loaner cars during service he stated I needed to pay an additional $800 for three years of service rentals. I told him I did not want it.
I got a loaner anyway, I guess it's a scam for more cash at purchase.

I dropped off my H1 today for service and tried to get an escalade. Turns out 1 was going out and the other one was reserved for someone who requested it. My next choice was a Deville and said No Thanks. I got a Silverado. Thank god I think I would have park the Deville in the street and left it there until my truck was done. The silverdo is a much more comfortable vehicle.
