Hey gang
I have come across the chance to get real late model train horns. These are no joke. I heard one setup on a Colorado truck. He uses a 1 gallon tank and it's own pump. He said You could use a 1/2 gallon tank but, on either setup just have air pump setup to refill and cutoff. He has it setup on it's own switch and mounted under body because they are big.
Gang these horns are the loudest thing I have ever heard. They are aluminum and can be polished or painted. I'm having Him to find out what they could be bought for and how many are available. He says it will not be a ridiculous price but, more than these baby aftermarket horns. You would sware You just heard a train at the crossing. If You are interested please start a list here for Me to see how many wants them. It may be We can get a better price on volume. I have mine already but, have not been priced to me yet. I kid You not You could blow this horn running 75 down the freeway and 6 cars in front of You would hear it. Well came across them and thought I would see if anyone wanted any. I have seen many requests for good loud horns. These could be illegal in some state do not know. Not even sure if I'll get in rouble in Arky land.
Let Me know so i can see how many and how soon I could get My hands on them to ship to You. I just want to help and horns will be at what ever cost is plus the actual shipping cost. Just like to return to the forum for all the guidance i have gotten. Just a way for Me to say Thank You.

Can you get any pics? Can you get just the horns w/o the compressor? Ballpark idea on cost? How big are the horns themselves? Is it raining there? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

PARAGON i will try and have more info in a few days. I will take digital camera and get pics. They come without compressor. All You will get is the horns, 3 horns per setup different size each with different tone to each. Sound, just pull up to a RR crossing and sit and listen that is what it sounds like. I'm told though You can control loudness with high or low pressure. I will get good measurements but, they are big. Way bigger than what You see for H2's in websites. But, they give a train size sound no joking. They are LOUD.
I'm thinking of mounting them on the frame. I do not think there is room under the hood.

Taz, if those are like the ones the truckers here in CA. have they are very loud. Here in CA. though they are also illegal, but then again so is tinting your windows.

These are so much louder than trucker horns not joking. I would bet they are illegal anywhere but, a little bad guy sneaks out every so often. I'll just have to be careful when i use them like at shows to draw attention to the Mall Queen. Or if someone just get's on My last nerve. They could cause a heart attack if used on the wrong person. As I mentioned the loudness can be controlled with pressure so they can be toned down. I would thing 2 1/2 gallon tanks to sitch between presure or an adjustable valve with remote to adjust pressure. You could mount a pressure gauge in cab and test it at different levels to know how loud it is a different pressure. I would think a remote nitrous valve could be used on tank. Some nitrous are just on or off but, i think i remember seeing a remote adjustable valve.
PARAGON i forgot it is raining here.

I know, the truckers out here use the train horns. If it were the ones that come from the factory I doubt they would be illegal http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Train horns and Hummers were mentioned in the same WSJ article recently. It's here. (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05125/499588.stm)
Best quote from the article: "For the past few months, Jose Lopez de Zaldo of South Beach has been periodically awoken in the wee hours of the morning by what he thought sounded like trains. 'I was very perplexed,' says Mr. de Zaldo. 'I've been living in Miami Beach for 15 years and never heard train horns.'" http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Without naming names, I happen to know a guy up north with a mac-daddy setup going into his black SUT right now. There is a problem with the compressor, but all's installed and ready to go. I have a feeling sounds and pics are on their way.
So just hang in there and see what he posts. BTW, around 140 dbs. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Tazzer,
I may want in, but I need more info. If I need to give up ground clearance, no-can-do. I had a 2 compressor, 5 horn, tank-free set-up in the Tahoe, which I can replicate in the H2 for around $70. I'll wait for more info from you. Thanks, Bro'. Mighty thoughtful of you!

I oppose the train horn idea, not that it doesn't seem like a cool toy. However, for the expense and effort- how many times would you actually "toot" it. Not to mention the thought of possible litigation if applied during your daily commute.
For instance- someone cuts you off, you blast it and a Prep School Van full of privileged children get hurt because the driver got spooked and ran into the guard rail. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

I will be going to the shop Thursday. Had planned to go sooner but, some other businesss stuff came up. I hope to have Pics, measurements, and cost. There may be a limited number but, that has not been determined yet. Just making an estimate I do not see how they can fit under hood. may be wrong though. We have been doing other things and not trying to figure horn install. We figure We'll make it work reguardless. We have to polish them also so they are going to be a last thing done type deal. I hope to have all the info I can collect at least posted Friday.
OH Co-pilot You are correct it will require selfcontrol as to when You use them. I will use them carefully but, in My situation it is for WOW at the shows. Drawing attention to My Girl.
Very good addition to this discussion though, OH most logical one.

I can think of so many times I'd like to have them. Damn stupid peo... Uh... How about ripping down the qtr blowing those things! I've already been told the H2 looks like a Brinks at night going down it. Let's add sound!http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The train horns are much bigger than the baby horns in the picture. I may have measurements tommorrow. I emailed a guy to see if he could get them for Me. These horns are heavy also. Made out of aluminum or at least the set I got donated to me are bu, seem dense. I just cannot relate in anyway how loud these are. It is all relaive to the pressure you put through them. The guy that showed Me his sound was off the hook. We had people come from way down the street to see what it was. I would say 1/2 mile away and from next street over with buildings seperating. You can control the loudness depending on how much of a risk taker you are.
But, You need to keep in mind that these horns are used on a train going what 30 to 60 MPH depending on if in a city crossing and they are heard with no problem above the train engine and track noise going on at the same time.
LOUD is all I can say.

I got some preleminary numbers on train horns.
These are numbers as to the area they would take up and the weight.
10" tall
19" wide
17.5' long
3 horns
They weigh 20 LBs.
Will have more info Thursday night

I got mine from Sound Innovators in Florida. It came to about $300 including shipping.
The largest trumpet is about 19" long. Not sure the diameter but its pretty big. You can see in the pic that its bigger than the alternator.
BTW, a 1/2 gallon tank is not nearly enough. You need 2gal minimum.
Dennis - I doubt I'll make MOAB this year. Keep me in the loop though, I really want to go out there!

Sorry Buddy I think I was getting a little sleepy. I'm going to do more detail measurements myself today. Taking digital camera so I can post those pics as well. I have to go to the shop and pick My girl up for a weekend of driving to test out the new supercharger and try to burn one tank of gas up as fast as I can and maybe get it out of My system. I may get tossed for street racing so I hope I can have My daughter call one of You guys to come and bail Me out. I'll pay You back immediately. They have never had anything to do with the law and would be scared to death. I told them just leave Me in there I'll do My time. It was funny to them at first untill they saw I wasn't laughing and then they got scared that I meant it. I told them never been in a jail may be one of the last unique experiences I will ever get to have. Nice thing is I know the Judge and the Chief so I probably would not get left in there even if I wanted to.
Seriously I will have more detailed numbers when I get back late today. have Pics also.

I'm getting a little more info on the horns a little at a time. The horns are being changed out because a few are old but, because most are to loud. No joke I talked to the guy who works for the RR and He said the horns the newer horns are to loud for some of the city ordnances that they pass threw. I'm going to attempt to place a Pic The ones I show are mine and You will be able to see where We have started polishing the right horn. It looks like they will polish up nice along with some minor smoothing of some seams. I placed them on the checkered flooring to give You a shot of the size of them. They do wieght 20 lbs.
Nice! Looks pretty heavy duty. Are those Grover?

I believe those will mount nicely in the void just above the skid plate and below/behind the radiator.
No need for mine to be polished.
Looks like there is a regular old airhose fitting on the manifold.

Ken You are right. It is a regular air hose hookup. We have been playing with it. The horns do not come with any valving. But, What We have been doing is hooking them up on regular air hose but, You could run stainless or copper if it was near heat. I'm waiting on the guy to tell Me what they can be bought for. I know what I have to pay but, I told Him if My Buddies and I want them I expect a better price with volume.
It would help if I knew how many to tell Him We estimate. There is a chance that there is a limited number so once I get details I'll just go through the thread and see who asked first and work down.
Dan I did not look at name brand. But, they are extremely heavy duty. It would take quite a hit to break them.
Ken did You get My email?

Actually, they look more like Nathans. K3LA's maybe.
I ordered a better compressor & tank today. I'll keep you all posted as to how they do.

Here is a pic of the one my friend has. It looks like only one part of the whole assembly, or else it's just a really old one. Like I said, he found it at the junk yard. This would fit under the hood no problem.

I ordered a better compressor & tank today. I'll keep you all posted as to how they do. I still have the 5 gallon stainless steel tank and the compressor and air lines I am going to mount. I wonder how long I could lay on the horn with 5 gallons of air. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This is not a pic, but will tell you something about it: Originally posted by unaslob:
an intersting BTW... on train horns.. if you are going to install a REAL train horn, as in one that came off a train, depending on the horn, that is a FEDERAL offense, and it carries a 10,000 dollar fine!! I know, b/c I had to look into it.
I bought a Nathan K-5-H, very large, very loud 5 chime horn, it accepts a 1/2 pipe for air. I purchased a 135PSI 25 gallon aircompressor for it. ran a 12 foot 1/2 inch pipe to it with a ball valve at the compressor end... now the horn can operate to 140PSI, with custom ear plugs and noise canceling flight headset... I can still only get it upto about 100PSI without being physically hurt. it is incredible.. it can be heard over 5 miles away!!! there are a number of companies that make 'train horns' but they are not off of a locomotive or ever intended for one.

Alright, I finally got mine installed and working correctly. These things kick ASS! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif The sound vibrates the whole truck.
A few things:
You'll need a 3 gallon tank minimum. I bought a 3 gal and its good for a couple good beeps. Anything smaller and it will empty out too quick.
Get some high pressure line. Mine blew a hole the first time running up the tank. I ended up with 2 10' braided stainless hoses from home depot that are good for 1400psi. The SS will help with the heat in the engine bay, rubbing on whatever, etc.
So far they are a lot of fun. I scared the **** out of two kids who thought they'd be funny and play chicken with me. Those kids jumped to the sidewalk and wiped the smiles off their faces REAL quick! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Now the fun begins....
Highly recommended! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

DAN how loud are the horns in dbs? I know the real wheels is 130 or 135 dbs? Can you post a link to where you got the horns?
Yeah Ken, I know! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif I'll do it tonite. Got busy last nite and forgot.
J - They are the LiteGlow (http://www.liteglow.com) train horns. The website says 142db @ 120psi, but the box the horns came in said 152db @120 psi. The compressor/tank combo that came with the kit is a POS and broke. I bought a Viair compressor and a 3 gallon Firestone air tank which pressurizes to 150psi. So depending on which db rating listed, and adding an additional 30psi, they're probably about 150-160db.
I bought the kit from Sound Innovators in Miami. The Viair from a local guy, and the tank from http://www.TruckSpring.com

Dan,
Would you suggest to only buy the TRAIN HORN (by itself) and get the cables, compressor, and tank separately or do I still need to get the COMPLETE TRAIN HORN SYSTEM.
How much more did the viair compressor and the tank (together) cost you?
Does the train horns mount to the firewall, with utilizing one of the hood latch bolts to secure it? How is it mounted? Is everything under the hood? (compressor and tank)
I listened to the MP3 file, and the sound bite on the website you listed. Now that you have them and heard them in person, do they sound exactly like a train horn?
Thanks
Joe
If I were to do it again, I would buy the horn itself and get the tank & compressor separate. The compressor/tank that comes with the "complete kit" kinda sucks. Its noisy, like one of those portable compressors that plug into a cigarette lighter.
The compressor with pressure swich cost me $160. Its a Viair 280C. Much quieter and has rubber mounts. It also has a remote air intake and filter.
The tank was $42 here: http://www.truckspring.com/airsprings/firestone/product/9127.asp I got the 3 port but ended up plugging the center one. So figure on $200 for the tank & compressor.
I bought some angle iron and added to the mounting bracket. I have it attached to the firewall with 2 self tapping screws. The horn juuuust fits in there so even if it came loose it wouldnt go anywhere. Its that close.
The compressor & tank are in the jack compartment in the bed. There's no way the tank is fitting under the hood. The compressor probably could, but I wanted them close to one another. There appears to be room to mount everything under the truck just above the rear axle, but take some measurements beforehand to be sure.
I'd say they are very close to a train horn. They don't pack the same punch as a real locomotive horn, but the sound & tone is defintely there. The real ones have a large diameter feed and use a ****load of air. Way more than would be practical to get working on an H2. BIG tank, etc.
They are definitely loud though and the fun factor is high. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Hey, I don't have that little storage area. Besides, I don't thing the 5 gallon tank I have will fit there. Is that 1/4 inch line? It looks larger.
These guys sell a slimline 3 gallon tank. That might work out better mounted under the truck.
