Check Engine Codes

My H2 has been showing the check engine light for 4 days now. Runs perfectly and still gets about 12.4 mpg. Gas cap is tight and I've definitely got three diagnostic cycles under me. Haven't disconnected the battery yet to try to reset it but honestly I'd like to know what it is before I reset it.

I know on older GM cars you could short out two terminals on the diagnostic connector with a paperclip and the check engine light would flash the code that it's throwing instead of using a scan-tool. Can this be accomplished on the H2? Trying to avoid buying a scan tool or programmer and I'd love to avoid the hassle of a dealer visit if it's a sensor of some sort I could replace myself.

OBD II code has to be checked using a scan tool I believe. I know places like Auto Zone will check your code free of charge but I would not recommand using any aftermarket components especially if you can get it done for "FREE" at your local Hummer Dealer... unless its out of warranty http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif use genuine GM parts

I get that when I powerwash my engine some times. I just disconnect/reconnect the battery terminal.

Onstar can run remote diagnostics and give you a code number. Have you been in deep water/mud lately? If so charcoal cannister/cannister purge valve will plug up with mud and require cleaning or replacing and set a code.

I'll try disconnecting and resetting it. If not, maybe I'll break down and buy a scan tool.

if you remove the battery cables for 15 minutes everything should reset. however, i would check the code first as you may need some type of reprogram on the computer
