Motorola hands free static & "snap" when hanging-up

I installed a Motorola hands free system in my '05. I hooked it up thru the speakers. It worked fine for a while, then when connected there is a high leval of static in the background. Additionally, when hanging up there is loud "snap".
Any ideas how to trouble shoot this?
