Installing the 2004 GM DVD Navigation System in a 2003 Hummer H2

Parts:

DVD Navigation Radio: 15204335 $1730.00
GPS Antenna: 15207447 $ 54.30
DVD Navigation Disc: 15105609 $ 220.13

TOTAL $2004.43

Summary:

Notice – I do not yet have a DVD Navigation Disc, so I cannot verify that the Navigation function is operational.

I installed a new unit purchased directly from a GM dealer. Other than needing to modify the GPS antenna bracket to mount it under the dash pad, this was a plug and play swap. No dealer programming was necessary!

Details

The connectors on the 6 CD changer radio are exactly the same as the NAV unit. The NAV unit has an additional plug for the GPS antenna that mounts in the dash.

Finding a dealer that could sell me the NAV unit was a real struggle. Every dealer that I called tried to enter the part number in their computer, and came up empty – Meaning that they could not order the part. Then I called a local GMC dealer. He also could not order the unit. However – He went one step further for me. He entered the part number in his national parts locator, a system dealers use to find where parts are in stock at other dealerships. A Cadillac dealer in California had 5 in stock.

I immediately called the dealership, Cadillac of Menlo Park, (650) 688-1543, and talked to Mike in parts. He said that they regularly swapped out the units in Escalades. All 5 units he had in stock were sold, so I had him order me a unit.

He called me when the unit shipped, and stated he ordered 12 more units. I don’t know how this dealership can get these units when no one else can – But they can get them.

I ordered the GPS antenna, and later the Disc from GMPartsDirect.com. I should have the Disc in the next few days.

The radio, CD player, OnStar, rear seat controls, and steering wheel controls all work perfectly. As I stated above, I cannot test the NAV function until my DVD disc arrives. However, I have no reason to believe there will be any problems.

I have taken 90 digital photos during my install, and will work on a write-up.

You are my savior! I was going to go with the Rosen setup but then I would have needed to purchase the navigation seperately which would be much more expensive than 2 grand total.

I can't wait till you get that disc!!

Frank,

Keep in mind this unit has the same limitations as the 2004 H2s have:

This unit will NOT play DVD movies.

There is only one slot. You must have the navigation disc in the unit to use the navigation function. Therefore, unless you go with a third party adapter, you cannot play a CD while using the navigation function.

So I would say that this is not a replacement for the Rosen unit.

Thanks Phil. I have to admit - It was a very expensive experiment, considering how GM, Hummer, and Delphi said it couldn't be done!

Fortunately, I'm a rebel that doesn't like to be told something cannot be done. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is that the part number listed after the items? Also do those guys take Credit Cards? I want to do this and I think it would be a great mod to do. How long did it take to get the unit from these guys in CA?

Klaus
01-03-2004, 04:02 PM
Yes, those are the part numbers and the prices. The antenna and the disc prices are from GMPartsDirect. The Cadillac dealer was more expensive for those items.

Yes, you can use a credit card to buy the unit. I did, and it took about a week to get it.

Keep in mind that GM does not want dealers to be able to sell these units, so the supply could dry up if GM is listening.

One other thing - I paid full price for my unit. I have no connection with the dealer. I am giving out this dealers name and number because this was the ONLY place I could find the unit. FYI - A used, locked unit out of a wrecked truck recently sold on ebay for $1550! That will give you an idea of how hard these units are to come by.

I should also mention that once you power up a new unit, it becomes "locked" to your VIN. If it is installed in a different vehicle, it will display "Theftlock Activated" on the screen. A dealer can unlock the unit with a Tech 2 tool, but it will cost you an hour of labor time.

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is the "Rosen unit"? I did a search but came up empty handed. Thanks!

I thought I remembered reading in a previous post that ths unit would play a DVD movie, but only with the vehicle in park. Can you test it to see if it works? Any help would be appreciated.

Klaus

Bevo,

I just tried a DVD movie to be sure. It will NOT play DVD movies. It gives an error about not being able to read the data on the map DVD.

Sorry, but I didn't think GM's lawyers would allow a movie to be displayed where the driver could see it.

Klaus, I spoke with my dealer this afternoon and he can get me one for $1650.00 including tax and shipping. However he told me the unit is not returnable because GM told him it would not work. I told him to give me a few days, I was going to wait to see how your's worked when you got your Disc. However for the most part if I just use for the Radio & Cd player I should be fine. Have yoo had any problems with it so far?

Klaus

So far no problems at all. But I understand the hesitation to buy with no way to return it. It was a big gamble for me, but now I'm glad I risked it! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I contacted GMPartsDirect about my NAV DVD order today, and they replied that my Dec 30 order didn't get processed until Jan 1. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif I find it hard to believe anything happened on the 1st, but that is what they said.

I did it in 2 leisurely days. Day 1 I used to disassemble the dash. Day 2 I went to Sears and bought metal sheers so I could modify the GPS antenna mount to bolt it to the dash of the Hummer. I then reassembled the H2, while taking pictures.

If you are in good with your dealer, see if they can find out if the GPS antenna made for the 2004 H2 can be purchased. I have not been able to get any info about it, so I bought the GPS antenna for what I think is the Escalade and modified the antenna mount.

Hey Klaus,

Thanks for all of the great information. As I had earlier suggested, it is possible.

In your document - is that rust on the metal support structure behind your dash?

Does GM know about this problem? I have taken apart plenty of dashboards in my time to install radios and I've never seen that much rust on the metal underneath in a car that is only 1-2 years old.

Someone should submit your picture to GM.

That much rust is no good for the long term.

Thanks,

Klaus
01-13-2004, 03:09 AM
Yep, it's rust. I think it is a required factory option for H2s. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I have no idea what Bose incompatibility that they are talking about. The audio sounds the same to me as it did with the 6-CD changer installed.

I install a nav HU in my North Face Avalanche in Dec, Started on Nov. 24 when I got the HU from the dealer and GPS. Installed and everything worked but the audio. after a few week of research I found out that I needed a diffrent amp. The Avalanches come with a cheep Bose amp so I got the amp and rewired the conector for it only to find out it needed to be programed. Dec 24th got it Programed and whala sound. One thing the you need todo in the hummer is conect the VSS to the HU so it will work faster on the Nav. If you have ? about how, ask You will Like it more.

Pbuilder,

From the schematics I've looked at, it is the same signal sent to the speedometer. I thought I'd just tap into it the next time I take my dash apart to install XM.

Do you do something different?

Pbuilder,

Do you have XM in your truck? That's the next add-on for me. I've looked at the schematics, and it appears that it could be added reasonably easy as far as connecting it goes. Getting the tuner module and the molex connector to plug the wiring into the module appears to be the biggest problems.

What kills me is that Gm and everyone else says we can't do this upgrade. the hummers and cads have it easy for they have the amp and mic already install. We avalanchers have to rewire the amp and add the mic and then get it programed. what a pain. if the truck or car has the upgraded amp in it already the it is easy. here is post on the Avalanche site.
http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=20;action=display;threadid=21297

I am planning on do a how to do for us since i was the first to do the upgrade in a AV.
No one else could do it. Now one other AV has it done.

I jus t bought the addon 6 disk changer that going in the escolade and tring to find a XM box from a juck yard to do it. the problem is that it will lock up when installed in another truck. the docs I have says it has to be replaced if that happens because the dealer are not able to unlock the xm boxes.
not sure if they will do a warrenty exchange on it or not if that is what happens.
I am going to find out one of these days.

when did you get yours done

Klaus
01-18-2004, 02:20 AM
I finished bolting it in on 01/02/2004.

It's interesting that you are looking at the changer and the XM box. That would be ideal. However, looking at the schematics of the Escalade, it appears that the add-on CD player and the XM box use the same pins on connector C2 of the radio. I could not find a schematic showing them connected at the same time. I wonder if it has to be one or the other?

I guess the easiest thing to do is wait for the Blitzsafe Skylink adapter for my XM. Blitzsafe says I should also be able to connect their soon to be released AUX adapter along with the Skylink adapter. I could then connect a digital player and have my entire music collection to choose from!

Any news on the VSS connection. I would also be interested in your overall impression of the system to date. Give me a shout if you ever need someone to wheel with!

Klaus

Bevo,

I haven't done it yet. I'm trying to do that at the same time I come up with a XM Radio/CD or Aux solution. I have the Soundgate adapter, but I've just about given up on using it because of everyone else's problems with it. The other adapters are not out yet. If their release date keeps slipping, I'll just go ahead and do the VSS connection.

The actual VSS connection should be straight forward. It's the wire that goes to the speedometer.

I'll post an update as soon as I do it.

Have you connected the VSS yet?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Not yet... I'm working on getting another music source to connect at the same time I connect the VSS.

Also, it has been too COLD for me to work on the truck.

You think it is too cold in Atlanta! It is 15 degrees in my garage. My PAC unit that runs my sub box quit working a month ago and I can not stand the thought of freezing my a$$ off to fix it. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

True, cold is a relative thing... But remember, I moved 250 miles NORTH when I moved to Atlanta! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

you won't be able to use your DVD to plat movies for the kids. What this does is lets you connect another video sorce to the HU and see it on your screen. To me it is lame.

I have the DVD player under the back seat. From the front seat you can reach and put a DVD in the player but you can't see the screen to know when to push play at the menus.

This would be perfict for what we need.

Congratulations, and welcome to the forum.

My next project is to add the 6 CD Changer from the Escalade in the OnStar location. I have most of the parts and instructions. Hopefully, in a couple of weeks I’ll have it done.

I also want XM Radio, so I’m working on that as well. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I’d like to add that the Chevy Avalanche guys have a great forum, and have really taken the lead on electronic goodies for GM trucks.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend you take a look at their forum:

Shouldn't the unit you bought be able to play XM radio? I know the DVD NAV that is coming with my SUT has XM.

That's great news that your install worked. I've seen one for sale on Ebay so far and I think it went for $1550. I plan on selling mine once I get my SUT as it was preordered with the build.

Unfortunately, the Factory XM Radio Option from GM includes a separate digital tuner box... And it is NOT available for sale. Also, they are VIN locked to the vehicle they are installed in, so a used part is not an option. The dealer cannot unlock them.
