Working on something fun here, a custom control center for your gadgets. If you had a choice would you like to have voice command features only for your stereo and other equipment such, or a combination of voice and wheel controls?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's a suggestion:

Spend more time with h2c-p and less on this poll! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

First, I don't know much about the particular voice control technology you're working with, but a couple of things come to mind.

I have used some of these things in the past and they required 'training'. If they still require this, and you only had voice control, what happens if you get strep throat or a bad cold, where your voice sounds different? On top of an already sore throat (and feeling like crap), it might take a lot of work 'vocally' to get things to work.

What about others that drive the vehicle (wife, dad, whatever), they would have to 'train' it also?

Then again, the technology may be light-years ahead now and not require this.

At least with a combination, you have a choice. Again, I know very little about it, just some thoughts that came to mind.

I think you need a third poll category: Wheel controls only.

Not only if you have other drivers or are sick, but what if you just have the sunroof open. Wouldn't that effect it too?

Have you ever tried to use Onstar when you're in a hurry? That bi&^h tells me "slower please" one more time, I'll rip the thing out of the car! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif When I asked the onstar rep how to get it to dial "2", he said to me,"say chew, or shoe". And there is no way to dial manually. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Maybe a few beers before dialing would help. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My vote: A combination of both.

I guess I should have had a choice such as "I like it the way it is", but we're talking good tech here.

If you don't have a touchscreen in the dash, an infrared remote would be used. That should solve the sore throat issue.

The voice command is not trainable. It recognizes words irrelavent to voice type. With the sunroof open and all the windows down you would merely speak louder.

Currently it won't replace the DIC data buttons or the AC, but it will soon. There are backups so you could still drive in case of a failure.

Keep 'em coming folks. I really appreciate it.

I think i would like a combination also. My voice dialing in the H2 is nothing to write home about. But then again it listens to me better than my wife.

Ken,

The only in-vehicle voice command (other than the On-star) I have used with reasonable success is the one on the BMW, but even with that system, you must pace yourself while giving the commands. BTW, the only reason I use it is that it beats the damn I-drive menu->sub-menu->sub sub menu navigation in order just to change the radio station http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Guys, the i-drive is truly a POS, not just a PITA and I love technology, just can't figure out how Bill Gates was successful in pitching the CE O/S to BMW and got on their board. Thank god I don't have to deal with the 7 other than bringing it in for service, wife can't say anything cause she chose it. Other than that, the handling & engine are simply amazing, got me out of a couple tight spots I otherwise wouldn't.

If thats the case and you could have the touch screen and/or wireless remote, that sounds like a helluva system, problems solved. I guess it truly has come a long way.

My vote is voice for all with existing controls for backup.

So long as you're getting around the need to touch the touch screen, how about making the NAV destination control available while moving?

And how about adding XM surfing commands like, "radio, channel four six" and NAV commands like "map zoom/unzoom/pan left/right"?

Onstar commands work pretty well for me so I imagine your control systems will do fine. Madam Onstar did get a little pissed at me once when after three consecutive "Slower please" responses from her I told her to SHUT UP! She said, "Pardon me?" http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Combination for sure. Voice works great most of the time, but there are times when I'd rather fiddle round with a button/touchscreen/whatever rather than tell my vehicle to F off http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I know this is an old thread, but I am new and kinda looking at everything. so here is my opinion Ken, if you are still into it. I have a BMW 750iL and the voice stuff is not efficient, waste of my time, however, I just bought my wife the '05 Honda Oddysey and it has a wonderful and simple voice system that can be used with NAV, CLimate control, and all Radio/CD/DVD functions and it works great with the windows up. An especially good feature is its training and word and sentence recognition, not just saying things letter by letter. Why am I here, b/c about to buy an H2!!!

There are some problems associated with the training and sentence recognition software. Most of it is in it's ability to recognize different voices with differing ambient sounds.

I appreciate the input, but it looks like a combination of the two would be the best route at this time. Convenience, safety, backup etc. It just seems to be the best system using the best available technology for the dollar.

With that said, things are subject to change. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
