View Full Version : Cop pulls me over just to look at my H2?

Has anyone ever been pulled over for an "improper lane change". I was driving highway 24 outside of CO springs today. I was behind some yahoo going 40 mph in the fast lane. I pulled over to pass him on the right. No one was within 100 yards behind me. All of the sudden I see a cop sitting in the median and his red lights go on. I couldn't figure out what was going on, then realized he was coming for me, so I pull over. I'm wondering...what the heck? I wasn't speeding or doing anything out of the ordinary. He gets out of his car, walks up behind my rig, taps that rear side a couple of times, eyes it a little bit, looks in and gives a big smile. Then he comes to the window and says to me, while I look in astonishment, "did you know you made an improper lane change"? I'm thinking.....you just weaved in and out of traffic, put 15-20 people in danger, drove like a madman to catch up to me just to tell ME I made an unsafe lane change? Of course, all I did was smile and give him my license. While I'm looking for my registration he says "don't worry, I'm not going to give you a ticket or anything. I'll be right back". A few minutes later he gives me my license back and says "have a good day".

My guess is that he just wanted a look at the H2 (not that I blame him). How often does anyone get pulled for a lane-change violation? I had a similar experience at work. The guard at the drive-in gate stops me to look at my ID. Normally, you just flash the ID from your car while driving through. When I gave him a funny look as he approached my window he say "actually, I just wanted a look at your rig". :-)

allow me to illuminate the situation: do you remember the commercial with the hot-chick driving the H2 through the city???

Well...he was probably hoping your H2 was her. Call it wishful thinking. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Did you wink at him when you smiled? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

They have now made it illegal to pass cars in the right lane over here, but has never happened to me. I used to get pulled over alot when I had my Porsche 911 Turbo just because the cop wanted to look at it and ask me questions about it.
I guess they think we have time to play there little games.

Nice story, little one sided, but its OK to dream that a cop pulled you over because you drive an H2

When he said I'll be back in a minute, he went to his car and ran a "29" Cop talk for he ran your license and the vehicle registration to see if you had warrants, suspended license and so on.

Most of the time cops pull over people like you (meaning nice, hard working people who contribute to society) for small things from time to time. It’s ALWAYS the small traffic violation that finds the dead body in the truck, the drunk driver about to plow through a bunch of pedestrians, the burglar lurking in a neighborhood, a robber who has just committed a robbery. People who have just stolen a car, drive Erratically like this.

As for him wanting to look at your freaking vehicle, NO WAY! They may say that as a way of breaking the "ICE", being polite, catching you off guard to disguise the real reason for the stop. See.......you fell for it.

Look at this way, he stopped you for an unsafe lane change, which is the #1 TRAFFIC COLLISION FACTOR in the state of CA and I'll bet if you go down to the CO STATE HIGHWAY PATROL and ask them, they will tell you it is the #1 collision factor there too.

It’s OK to be proud of the H2 and I certainly am VERY PROUD of mine, but you need to get a life. THE COPS DIDN'T PULL YOU OVER TO LOOK AT YOU RIG!

As for the other comment "I'm thinking.....you just weaved in and out of traffic, put 15-20 people in danger, drove like a madman to catch up to me just to tell ME I made an unsafe lane change?" WE ARE PROFFESSIONAL, HIGHLY TRAINED DRIVERS WHO ATTEND HI SPEED EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATION COURSES EVERY YEAR.............you are not.

Writing about your experience is cool and I enjoy reading about them, but putting words into a police officer's mouth about something as unintelligent as pulling you over to look at your vehicle is stupid.............

By the way, the code for an unsafe lane change is 21650 CVC

That's an interesting perspective. My sister is a police commander in Minnesota and has a different perspective. Sounds like you might be a little brainwashed by the CA socialist agenda.

Since it's o.k. to routinely pull people over to look for all those dead bodies on our highways, should we sanction routine house inspections in all of our neighborhoods, just to catch the guys who have corpses buried in the cellar? Can you say slippery slope? Was there any reasoning behind the search and seizure restrictions in our legal system?

I need to get a life? So, let me understand........driving at high speeds, in and out of traffic, ....but in a 'trained' way...is worth the risk of having the evil "lane changers" lurking around our communities.

Of course, I was exaggering a bit and I don't profess to know his true intention. I didn't get a ticket and it didn't suffer any real consequences (other than my baby girl awaken from a restful slumber). But I do know that I've been driving for 20 years and have probably passed a car in that manner at least a 1000 times. Four weeks into H2 ownership I'm pulled over for it. Strange coincidence.

I actually had an officer pull up and do the same thing. Except I was waiting at the video store on a friend parked out front. The officier pulled up and said.."lady you need to exit the vehicle so that we can do a routine new car inspection"...HAHA!! IT was quite funny as I was taken in and later realized it was a friend's husband that I had not met yet.

Scared the bergezers outta me. But was quite funny. Took all of two seconds to register it was a joke.

Tread lightly.

Remember these are PROFFESSIONAL,HIGHLY TRAINED DRIVERS WHO ATTEND HI (not high) SPEED EMERGENCYVEHICLE OPERATION COURSES EVERY YEAR. You are not.

I wonder if that is the training where they teach them to t-bone us non trained ,non professional drivers like the ones that keep happening in San Diego.

Please dont take this the wrong way because I have much respect for MOST peace officers, especially the C.H.P. The Sheriff's on the other hand is a different story. I have a CDL and got pulled over for not comming to a complete stop in a turn-out going up a hill. When I told him that you dont have to stop, you just have to use it he said I was wrong. Well when we got to court he stood there and lied in front of the judge saying I never used the turn out,not that I didn,t stop. That changed my opinion and left me a little bitter. Anyone that would lie under oath for such a minor thing would definately lie for just about anything. I know thats just one guy and maybe im generalizing but maybe Im not the only one

There is NO WAY the police officer stopped you to look at your Hummer. He was doing his job to make sure you are not a drunk or joy ride car thief or whatever potential danger to the society. I agree with heeHaw completely. What is most amazing is that you actually think the police stopped you to look at your Hummer.

An unsafe lane change has little to do with what lane you pass someone on. What is not cool is driving right up behind someone with a menising truck and then too quickly changing lanes. It scares people when you drive like that and as the other experts on this board have pointed out it causes too many accedents in all countries.

CO Hummer if you drive more politley you will not get stoped by the police! You should be listening to what HeeHaw has to say, there is a very important lesson for all of us in this thread and I am afread you are missing it completly.

Cheers

One needs to come to a complete stop before making a right turn on red light, which is not allowed in many states, Utah I think is one which does not permit right turn on red?

Got to make sure I come to a complete stop at every stop sign, I have been seeing this same motorcycle cop everyday last week, at different places in my town. I think we only have one motorcycle cop in my town, same guy, Barry, let my wife off the hook once. I turned the corner, ooops, I see him waiting there, "did I stop completely?" Sooner than later my luck will run out.

Heehaw....I'm citing you for excessive use of verbal rebuttal, openly insulting a forum member publically, and "roughing". What happened to the friendly Heehaw we used to know?....you've changed man...you've changed. It used to be about the H2 and freedom...what's up with that? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

...And I'm not going to even get into your not showing up at any of our offroad events... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Heehaw is almost certainly correct...the officer meant to check things out and was doing his job. I have heard of officers pulling people over just to check out their ride....but it's done more in the style that Hummergirl describes. As far as I'm concerned, it's better the police pull-over and check 100 innocent people then let one child abductor or convict get away with something. The cop was doing his job.

Regardless of subject content, I'd like to see more respectful and nicer communication between forum members here. Let's keep it friendly out there folks! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Steve, maybe when the subject touches on our own profession or our own personal life we all get a little touchy. I watched those REAL TV stuff, those police road stops are dangerous, they never know what will happen when they walk up to a vehicle on any given day. That is how they catch a lot of the bad guys, and the bad guys usually do not want to go quietly, especially when they are in control of a 2 tons vehicle, or in a car where they can easily hide the weapons. Remember those DC snipers? they managed to get pass some police road stops.

What Vanity.

Today, the nearby Millbrae police tried to stop a car which failed to stop at a red light, it turned into a wrong way chase onto freeway 280, which resulted in a head-on collision that killed a 20 years old young man from Hillsborough, my small town.
The same Millbrae had an officer killed not longer ago on a routine freeway stop.

I was not upset, but I am getting angry now. I have police officer friends, I had 2 Millbrae officers at my dinner table last week, I know many young men and women in my town, maybe one of them is dead, it all started from a routine traffic stop.

And you think it is fake? you think the cop stopped the Hummer just to admire it? what vanity and what selfishness. do you ever read the paper or watch news? ever read books? now I understand why HeeHaw was upset.

OK, my final words on this topic...

MAC - I never stated as fact that he pulled me over to view the H2. None of us know. Some of us have our opinions. I'm suggesting only that it's a possibility based on 20 years of consistent driving habits.

WANNBE - I guess I won't comment since, apparently, you were there and have better recollection of the facts than I do.

I'll acknowledge that I'm a little (or a lot) sarcastic at times which is reflected in my posts. I certainly didn't mean for this to become so personal for those who seem to have taken it that way. I joke around with my police offer relatives and friends in such manner and only receive a lot of jovial back-n-forth, all in good nature. The name calling, personal insults, and misrepresentations really don't have an effect on me but certainly bring the board down a couple notches on the maturity scale.

Woooooo, definately some sensitive folks out there- no one will ever know if the cop just wanted to get a closer look at the rig or if he was just doing his job (or maybe both!). Certainly we can speculate as if we were the media for days on this one, but lets not make more out of it than it is. The original posting was clearly just a proud Hummer owner speculating that the cop may have been wanting to see his rig up close. For the record our rigs are over 3 tons, not 2. Humor people, humor! Nobody here accused rodney king of being beaten here, nor were there sniper rifles OR Elizabeth Smart tucked away inside!

Sorry folks! Thanks for not yelling at me. I got on my soap box and I regret it....Can we all just get along? Answer: Yes. I will be nicer and I have been fined by Steve. Appreciate that, keeping me in line and all.

Like Mac said, I get a little uptight when it comes to the police. I think its an honorable position and I defend it instantly and take no prisoners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have mellowed out now and the PROZAC has kicked in.............

Oh by the way, COHUMMER, when the cop touched the rear of your vehicle, it was for a reason. Here it is: We touch the vehicle as soon as we can to detect anyone moving around in the vehicle. As an example, if we touch the car and feel it moving, BUT there is only one person visible in the vehicle, wouldn't you think something is wrong? Possibly.....It could be someone hiding a weapon Or it could be kids playing in the backseat. That's why our job is so tough. Little things like that are what split second decisions are made over.

Anyway.............I'll be nice and thanks to all that supported my point, no matter how offensive I was in stating it..............

Steve, you are going to be disapointed in me. Sat at 09:00 they began 6K worth of work on my H2

I bought the Pioneer NAV system for the front and it plays DVD as well. A 6.5 widescreen monitor for the front. Voice activation and the other goodies.

Next they are also installing a complete seperate DVD system for the rear with head rest 7 in monitors and another DVD system with wireless headphones for the rear. Should be way cool and I AM GOING TO POST PICTURES

Also they are installing a TV tuner so I sould be able to get TV stations no matter where we go.

Sorry, but I need to go before June when I go back east. Sorry for being a flake, but I promise to get out in April (not the 5th and 6th). By the way, come and see me at the END OF THE LINE fly fishing store in LA Verne on the 5th and 6th for an estate sale of my friends

My only comment on the subject to law enforcement officers is, just because you wear the badge, does not make you just of even fair handed with the way some think they have to treat the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect...and yes I say serve...most here in northeast Louisiana have forgotten or just don't care that they are not above the law, but are subject to the same laws that apply to the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect.
A law enforcement officer is a law enforcement officer 24/7 it is not a job, but a privilege to serve the communities in which they live. Most have forgotten this. Every day I see our local law enforcement breaking the same traffic laws that they seem to think only apply to the citizens of there community. This in turn sets a very bad example for our children. How can parents teach there a child right from wrong when all they see happening around them is that right and wrong only applies to some? My own son who is only 14 has asked me many times about this issue. What am I, as a parent, suppose to tell him? Do I tell him that they are the law and we do as we are told? What does this teach them? Corruption has run rampant in this country, on every level, because we as a nation do not hold our leaders accountable for there actions. And this way of thinking is why our nation is in such trouble today! Where is the justice in breaking laws to enforce them?

Hey Paragon...LOL...so now I'am a twat for serving my country? LOL! I have to laught to keep from crying, because I have lost many freinds and comrades in the first Gulf War. Not to mention, 2 in Panama in 89/90 out of 23 U.S. soldiers killed, 3 in Somalia in 92/93 out of 29 U.S. soldiers killed, 1 in Kosova in 99 out of the 2 reported U.S. soldiers killed, and 1 in Afghanistan, and 2 so far in this Gulf War. And these are only the conflicts I can mention, most of American has forgotten about these little wars, or just don't give a $hit. I was just one of the lucky that got a second chance at life.
Sorry Paragon, I got off on a little rant. Just a touchy subject... I know you were joking!
Hey what happened with you keeping me informed on the Hummer Happenings over your way neighbor?...LOL
We have one coming up next month, leaving from sherv. and going somewhere in tx...don't have the details yet, but would hope you would consider joining us.
Later!

La - I believe Paragon was directing this to "H2GO", which has proven to be an idiot.

Lobster, it was, in no way, directed at you. It was directed at the punk who was trying to garner points by responding to you. No worries, I served as well.

We haven't had any Happenings since you and I spoke, except for that one I told you about.

If you want to wheel, a group of us are going to Tellico next month. It's about 10-11 hours for you but will be worth it, I think.
