I like it! Did you put the warn bumper on? It looks like a chrome badge on it, or a chrome plate behind the cutout.

Thanks. Hummer dealer sold it and put it on for me. They're also putting my Fabtech tie rods on. I figure, that way, they will have a more difficult argument about any warranty voiding if that ever comes up.

Thanks. It comes with a Warn 9.5xp (9.5K lb) winch. I'd rather have a bigger winch, but that's all I could find readily available. I guess I can use a snatch block if I need to increase the pull. (Actually, I included that last part because I just like saying "snatch.")

I may just go exploring the national forests roads pretty soon, looking for camping and hunting spots.

Instructor,

Enlighten me about stretching the rope? I too ordered that front bumper winch assy. It should be here this week and if there are any tips/tricks I need to do, I'd love to know.

Thanks,

Don't listen to that BS. The winch should come pre-spooled and will be ready to go. "Setting" the winch line is a good idea if you are re-spooling but you are not doing so, typically, with a new winch with it's own cable.

Dumbass makes it sound like something will happen if you don't "stretch" it before you "use it." That's not why one pre-stretches wire winch rope. You spool it under load so that it lays properly and the wire fibers don't bunch. It has nothing to do with using the rope for the first pull.

For instance, you could spool up the first layer and hook it up for the first time and winch yourself out and be just fine.

A big http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

tomp
02-19-2006, 11:56 PM
Like the others stated, I do not think stretching is needed. It is important to stow line cable on spool with a load applied. The reason for this is so the cable does not cut down into the other spooled cable underneath.

instructor
02-20-2006, 01:09 PM
You have to spool the rope under tension to set a memory to the wire rope, this makes it easier to spool the next time you use it. Second, you need to make sure the lower wraps are nice and tight. You will not be able to always be on the first wrap when you use your winch the first time, if you were able to do that, stretching wouldn't apply. If you don't think you need to stretch the rope, call Warn, ramsey, or MM.

Paragon, why do I have to be a dumbass, I've been wheeling for 20 years.

I suggest you call Warn, Ramsey or MM. Their winches come pre-spooled with the cables already set, requiring no additional action on the purchaser's part. Only when you spool up a new line should you follow a specific regimen to get the most out of one's winch and winch line.

I'm not sure why you have to be such a dumbass. You also posted that a 9500lb winch will pull a 7000lb truck around all day long. Maybe you forgot to ask Warn, Ramsey or MM about the part where you should try to match your winch at 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle. While the 9.5xp will suffice, it will barely suffice and will be anemic in many situations while trying to pull the H2.

And I've been wheeling for over 20 years.

I don't have to wheel Hummers for a living, I do it for the fun of it.

instructor

page 3 #14 straight from the Warn winch operators manual, in bold print I might add.
"The wire rope on a new winch, and any replacement ropes, MUST BE STRETCHED AND RESPOOLED UNDER LOAD before using the winch. Failure to do this will result in wire rope damage."

On to the 9.5 XP. Do you have one? Have you used one? I do, and used one daily for quite a while on a H2. Hardly anemic, in fact the XP is the most underrated winch that Warn has. It pulled up 7 16" steps at a 40 percent grade faster and cooler that a MM 12K (which smoked). If you need more pull, use a snatch block.

MarineHawk
02-20-2006, 04:19 PM
I noticed that page 5 #27 says that "MarineHawk is the Winch Master!"

Seriously, the only winching I've ever done was yesterday when I let some cable out, connected it to the recovery hook, and cinched it tight. Yet, I feel somehow like have known my winch for years. Is is possible that I was a badda$$ wincher in a previous life?

PARAGON
02-20-2006, 04:56 PM
Funny thing, that's not how it is worded in my 9.5xp manual. It reads "Always prestretch wire rope and spool under load before use. Tightly wound wire rope reduces chances of "binding", which is wire rope working it's way down into a loosely wound wire rope layer, and catching or damaging itself."

You are simply full of ****. "used one daily"??????

For your information, dumbass, I was one of, if not THE first to put the Warn bumper with the 9.5xp on my H2.

Using your logic, I should just spend less money and get a 7K pound winch and use 1 or 2 snatch blocks. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

instructor
02-20-2006, 05:05 PM
