Would anyone prefer a turbo diesel option for their H2?

I was thinking how GM's Isuzu diesel would be a great fit for the H2. This would enable much better fuel mileage and that mean diesel sound the H1's have. The fuel milage does not bother me that much. I just like the sound of a diesel.

I hate diesel personally. It smells horrible and is way to fricken loud for my tastes. I'll stick with gas. Fuel isn't a major concern for me.

From what I understand, the diesel engine doesn't meet Federal emissions standards after '05. Sure, it might give better towing power now, but would we have to modify the engine once emission standards come into effect? I bet GM would have to if the laws call for the engine to emit certain ammounts of NOx but I don't know if that means for models sold before the 05 model year or only 05 and later. Either way, the only way that diesels will pass emissions control standards is with particulate traps and huge exhaust mods, so think about the added cost on the hood......

Also, diesel is not that much cheaper anymore, (In my neck of the woods it's $1.42 for regular, $1.39 for diesel) so even with possible better fuel mileage, (that is, if the diesel had particulate traps on it, since particulate traps restrict the engine breathing and lowers your power output)the amount of money that you save is miniscule, and the extra cost of the diesel engine means a longer time until you have positive equity in the vehicle, even with increased gas savings.

I had initially thought that the diesel would be a good idea, but now that I think more about it, the gas engine looks good, and what the hell, I want an SUT! If I can swing the financing, then I'm going to go for the '06 or '07 model and by that time I'd hope that the Vortec gets a horsepower upgrade, too. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I thought the Turbo-diesels were still projected to meet emission standards. But, either way, I think it would be a worthwhile future option for the H2. The H-1 is turbo-diesel. However, I personally am happy with the gas engine.

The upcoming emissions standard is .20 grams per mile of NOx, the current standard is 1 gram per mile, and the entire manufacturer's fleet has to be less than .07 grams per mile, so the diesel mix would have to be about as thin as it is now in order to prevent GM from accidentally going over the limit and getting slapped with a CAFE fine. I guess that pre-05 models will be grandfathered in, though.

Just got a definite confirmation that the Duramax is in the new H1. I'll be pestering my source for pics until I have them in my hot little hands.

How is that possible DRTYFN? The Duramax is a joint Isuzu/GM project, and the H1 is an AM General vehicle. I thought that AM General was getting their diesels under contract from General Engines Products, a wholly owned AM General subsidary. Unless GEP has been divested, which I haven't heard anything about. Please get your source to clarify this little incongruity.

I'd rather buy an H1, but would stay clear of a new Duramax in the 04 model. New configurations are risky. My bro has a Duramax/Allison configuration in his truck and loves it. Power, torque, mileage and super quiet (the Allison is a little loud).

I'm on my 6th Duramax/Allison truck, best stock combo I've ever had.
20+ mpg in the H2 and could tow 2 more H2s behind it.
Allison has a lower 1st gear and the downhill braking plus 2 pto mounts (great for hydraulic winch).
This motor has more torque at 1000-1200 rpm than any other GM motor makes at any rpm. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Duramax/Allison H2, it doesn't get much better.
Also for the racers a Duramax p/u truck has run in the 12s quarter mile.
It had turbo help and propane injection.

If they ever come out with a Duramax/Allison option for the H2, I will be the first in line! Nothing, but nothing, beats our truck with the Allison and I would give anything to have that in my H2!!!

Some info on H2 w/diesel from autonews.com:

FRANKFURT -- The Hummer H2 sport-utility is 2063mm wide, 2080mm tall, weighs almost 3000kg and needs 22 liters of gasoline to travel 100km. General Motors will sell it in Europe this year, but it won't have a diesel.

The H2's engine compartment isn't big enough to fit a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel.

"We have to wait until we do an aesthetic re-do of the H2, at which point we may have to make the nose a little longer and a little higher to get the Duramax in," said GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz.

For now, the only available engine is a 316hp, 488Nm, 6.0-liter gasoline V-8.

Thanks for all the responses on this topic. I guess they are considering a Duramax afterall. Bob Lutz needs to see that 70% so far would prefer the diesel. However if it were $5-6K more I bet that would drop below 50%.

I'd buy a diesel if it were avaliable but I'm not sure if I'd spend more for it.

FRANKFURT - General Motors has no immediate plans to offer a diesel engine for the Hummer H2 in Europe.

"We're working on it - the U.S. wants it, too," said GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz.

Lutz said the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel will not fit under the H2's hood. That engine is offered in selected GM full-sized trucks in North America.

"We have to wait until we do an aesthetic re-do of the H2, at which point we may have to make the nose a little longer and a little higher to get the Duramax in," he said at the Frankfurt auto show.

No timetable was given for the re-engineering to accommodate the engine."

any thing anyone could tell me would be appreciated. I am thinking about up grading my F-150 with an F-250 with a Diesel.

Why not just a supercharger instead?

$10,000 for a dealer installed supercharger. Plenty of power. 5-6 mpg at 85-90 mph. A duramax and allison would triple the fuel economy. Add a $420 diabosport programmer for and additional 100 HP and 200 ft.lb. torque on the Duramax. Way more HP and Torque than a supercharged motor. I'd pay $8000 more for a duramax all day long.
