I'm going in the near future. Anyone have any recommendation on what to do, where to eat, where to wheel? (ok, maybe not wheeling).

I'm thinking about visiting Pompei and the Tuscany region. Beyond that, haven't decided what else to do.

I've never been, but I wouldn't miss visiting Vatican City.

I have heard a lot about it from a friend that studied architecture there but I've never been.

I would definitely go to Lazio for the Colosseum, the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. Oh and the Roman Forum where the temple of Ceasar is/was, there is a lot still standing.

Def go see the Pantheon and the Parthenon ( the structure that sits atop the plateau overlooking parts of Rome. I studied the hell outta these 2 structures in architecture school, so they are a MUST SEE. I plan to take the family once I return from Iraq. :clapping:

What sucks is that the Euro is at all time high right now. I couldn't have picked a more expensive time to go.

We were definitely planning to see the Pantheon/Parthenon, Colosseum, Vatican, and Trevi Fountain. I hadn't thought about the 'Roman Forum'.

I've been to Rome. Everyone who has posted so far has given you the top spots to visit. Don't forget the Spanish Steps, too. Right on about the pick pockets, too. If you take one of the horse drawn carriage rides through the city, keep EVERYTHING between you and the other person ..never on the seat next to your hip or by your feet... pickpockets run alongside and will grab anything within reach. My best suggestion, if you are on a short visit, is to book one of the Grayline sighteeing tours .. they will take you to the important tourist stops. Be sure you know that on their brochure that only the highlighted spots are actual stops where you can get off and walk around. Non-highlighted means the bus comes to a slow roll for photo ops only. Everything closes down in the city mid afternoon for a sort of siesta. The city is packed with history... old mixed in with the new. Enjoy every minute!

Maybe MountainBiker will see your post, too. He and his wife had lived in Italy for awhile.

Watch out for the Gypsies. If you even see one nearby, dont let them out of your sight, seriously. You will know one when you see one.

I hear they attack in packs. One will pretend to push or bump into you, the other will pick your pockets or purse (CO carries a European handbag) while you're being distracted by the bump , and it gets passed on to the third guy who walks away while the first two crowd you apologizing for the bump in.

LOL .. it's true about the gypsies. I've noticed gypsies in many European cities, but really not so much in Rome. Rome has its own little pack of thieves among the tourist areas. The gypsies ... it's really something to watch them in action. They are so good in what they do that you want to believe them and their sad stories .. but then that's when you feel the other ones behind you tugging at your shoulder bags or checking a back pocket. The thugs in Rome (just like in any major city) tend to be older teens who move like lightening. Just beware of your surroundings.
