Thousands Expect Apocalypse in 2012

(July 6) - Survival groups around the world are gearing up and counting down to a mysterious date that has been anticipated for thousands of years: Dec. 21, 2012.

Across the United States, Canada and throughout Europe, apocalyptic sects and individuals say that is the day that the world as we know it will end, ABCnews.com (http://abcnews.go.com/International/Story?id=5301284&page=1) reports.

Signs of the Apocalypse

Those who claim the apocalypse will occur on Dec. 21, 2012, base their beliefs on a calendar devised by the Mayans, whose ruins are shown in Mexico above. The ancient civilization is known for its prowess in mathematics and astronomy.

Ancient Mayan societies, known for their advanced mathematics and astronomy, followed a "long count" calendar that lasted 5,126 years. When their charts are translated to the Gregorian calendar, the international standard used today, time runs out on Dec. 21, 2012.

Believers say there are other links besides just the Mayan calendar that portend catastrophe. The sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years on the same day, which marks the winter solstice. Some say that will disrupt the energy flow to Earth, or that the high rate of sunspots or sun flares that NASA has predicted for 2012 could affect Earth magnetic fields.

Scientists have tried to squash the doomsday scenario as another empty prophesy, but it?s clear there are thousands who consider the possibility of a worldwide catastrophe occurring on that date very real.

"You have to understand, there will be nothing, nothing left," Patrick Geryl told ABC News. "We will have to start an entire civilization from scratch." Geryl, a 53-year-old former laboratory worker who lives in Belgium, quit his job two years ago after he saved up enough money to last him until December 2012. He?s now stocking survival supplies, a list of which runs 11 pages long.

Geryl is certainly not the only one. Searching for "2012 the end of the world" on Google brings up nearly 700,000 hits. More than 6,500 video posts about the day have been posted on YouTube. There are also countless books on the topic, many published in the wake of the success of Daniel Pinchbeck's "2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl," which has been selling thousands of copies each month since it was released last May.

Doomsday Cults

http://www.aolcdn.com/aolnews_photos/0a/07/20080706115409990020AP
2008: Dozens of members of a Russian doomsday cult left a remote underground dugout near the village of Nikolskoe, Russia, in March, after spending about six months holed up there. Others stayed behind, waitingfor the world to end in 2012

But what do believers think will happen on Dec. 21, 2012? Some say a polar reversal, where the north pole becomes the south, where the sun rises in the west, triggering natural disasters around the world. Others say the date marks a worldwide spiritual awakening.

Experts laugh off these notions. "These prophecies of doom really don't have any basis in what we know about the Maya," said Stephen Houston, an anthropology professor at Brown University and an expert in Maya hieroglyphic writing. "The Maya descriptions barely talk about this event." He said the Mayans saw their calendar coming to an end on the date, but then starting over without any catastrophes.

"Really, it's a conversion of people?s anxieties about our times, and finding some remote mythological precedent or prediction of it," he said. "People like to believe that ancient wisdom is somehow predicting this time of upheaval."

I find all of this really fascinating. I've looked up 2012 before too. Kind of scary stuff if you tend to believe that kind of thing but I do find it neat and a little scary. Also, you have the honeybees disappearing and I can't remember which person said if they honeybees go away, so does mankind.

apparently if bees go away man kind has something like 3 months so i hear, but about this 2012 apparently some people translate ti differently as the end of an era, that could just mean new world powers and stuff doesnt mean teh world is going to physically end. who knows i dont believe, this shoulda been a poll who believes and who doesnt!

well...

...I guess if you consider what may happen the year 2012 there could be a couple of possible out comes?

1. The idea of a higher form of light reveiling itself to mankind could be one. if that happens it would wipe clean the slate that is religion.

2. the fact the earth has had many magnetic flip flops is literily cast in stone. they happen about every 300,000-600,000 years.
what would happen if it did so?

my toilot would now flush in the opposit direction....big whoop.

just to ease your minds a bit on the subject. I do not suspect the dooms day idea. its highly unlikely if only for Y2K as an example. every retard with a computor had generator sales going to the roof and survialists were battening down the hatchs for the "plague" that followed...

..I'm still locked in my basement!...HELP!!!! ...I only have three cans of cheese wiz left and no crackers!!!!!

For Christ sake people, get over yourselves. sure I worry, but not about stuff I can't control. please don't make things worse by being ignorant.

Who happens to be ignorant here? All I said personally was that it was kind of scary to think about. I don't recall anyone saying they were freaking out over it. Perhaps others should get over themselves.

There are so many different aspects this can be looked at from I would not begin to know them all nor understand them for sure.

I know that intellectually, common sense, plain book sense, religious sense, dummy sense, and theological sense there are so many that have
MANS WISDOM so much greater than me it would almost be ridiculous to lay out my simple thought on this. Being concerned with peoples idea of time and date of worlds end or change maybe just a refreshing of time. Then it continues to roll on at what ever level of smarts the human race has achieved.

Well I just know how I look at as well think about times and dates of mine, my family, and the worlds demise. I just know that there is nothing I can do about it even if the time/date happens to be inconvenient with my portable PDA or whatever the most popular means of keeping up with time and date is right now.

My thought is first have I done all I can to be what my Lord Christ has asked of me to have knowledge and beliefs that allow my feelings of Peace concerning things out of my controll? Then have I done all I could to share with My Personal Family and Friends the same knowledge and beliefs that give me the Peace that they are deserving of the same and more so than me.
My final thought is I hope I have been able to share with everyone else I could the same things mentioned.

I have to much to deal with this day and time to be concerned with 2012. We may be in WWIII in 2012 and at 55 watching to see if my draft number is up yet. That is if they have not let me volunteer to try and hold off taking Our Nations youngest until and unless they are really needed.

This reminds me of the week everyone decided to "boycott" eBay; I ran auctions anyway and they all did well, one auction in particular broke a personal price record.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be scheming for ways to cash in :giggling:

I made that as a general statement. most folks have the sence to wade through the crap and get to bottom of most things. Y2K was ALL HYPE. the odds of it repeating itself are pretty high, but some people have short memories. please don't take it personally unless your one of them people.

Not at all. I didn't even put up a can of tuna during Y2K.

I did not put up anything for Y2K either. For 3 years I got free cases of tuna, peanuts, salmon, and other things my x's mother and brother put up. Thought I would come to hate tuna but, love it after finding out all the ways you can make stuff out of it.

Actually, the world ended when they ended Sex and the City unless you want to go back to that time they ended that Aaron Spelling show, Models Inc without even letting us know the cliffhanger ending of who was shooting people at the wedding!:twak:
PS tuna with oil tastes better and only about 10 more calories. Good stuff!

Speaking of fish...

I bet they have some killer restaurants serving up Mahi Mahi tacos down that way?!

A longtime friend of mine and I usually try to hit different locations for a yearly fishing trip. We've been talking bout Mahi-Mahi fishing in Florida a few years from now. Oh $hit, the world might end though?!
