mounting lights

has anyone ever mount lights on the factory roof rail. i was looking at it and it seems fairly easy to mount (4) piaa 520's on it.

I'm about to mount 8 PIAA 510 4" lamps on the cross bar....

I had two ideas for the mount...

1- use nut certs to attach a steel plate on the bottom of the cross bar, one for each light. The steel plate would come out in front of the cross bar just enough to base mount the PIAA

2- simple drill straight through the center of the cross bar for each mounting location. Replace the short PIAA bolt with a longer one from the hardware store and be done.

After holding the lights up to the bar and actually mocking up the steel plate method, I think that simply mounting the lights with a longer bolt in essence clamping the light from front/back of the cross bar is the best method for both looks and adjustment.

Open to other options if you got em'

I'm powder coating so if I fab it up before the powder coating it should look good.

i was going to simply place a larger(fender washer) between the bracket and another one inside the rail then the nut. so basically it would be.... light/bracket/washer-bolt thru the center of crossbar(no hole needs to be drilled except thru the strip of rubberr-washer/lockwasher/nut. you wont need a longer bolt. then right next to it, drill a smaller hole so that the black plastic conduit holding the wires can go thru the rubber strip. the wires would then be ran inside the crossrail and inside the cab. just to see if it was going to work, i took off the end cap of the roof rail, peeled the rubber strip back and already mounted a light and its very sturdy. let me know what you think...

I think I understand. You're basically using two washers and a bolt as a clamp??

One that goes on the inner lips (under the rubber strip) of the cross bar and the other that goes on top of the rubber strip.

This would place the PIAA lights mounted on top of the cross bar, which for me is too high. I need mine mounted down lower.

Sounds like yet one more way to mount some lights to the cross bar though!

I'm going to do it slightly differently. I'm making some approx. 1" x 2" flat steel rectangles that are tapped in the center. They'll slide into the opening, but when turned just slightly will hook under the lip and keep the lights in place. I did this with my H3 before I moved to a H2 and it worked great.

Has anyone replaced the lights in the OEM light bar with HID lights or modified it so it doesn?t suck? If you go to delta's website and see there new HID light bar, i was like this is no different really than an OEM bar, couldn?t you just changes bulbs? or do you have to change relays etc?
