You should seriously consider wheel guards if you do loads of off-roading. A bit pricey (around $500 for a set) but well worth it in the savings on the wheels themselves.

(These are basically steel discs that mount to the CTIS holes and provide protection to the whole wheel - check my homepage for pics of bagman's)

Great looking tires! Did you do anything with the runflats? There seems to be little controversy as to keep or not to keep.

Hey Buck,

Any trail report on the PJ's yet?

I chickened out and had my tire dealer locate 4 MTR's, for me to put back in reserve. (he found them one at a time, scattered all over the U.S.)

Yep, used them Saturday in Big Bear in about 2' of snow and mud. They were awesome. They impressed me the most when I towed an H2 UP a slope, 2' of snow, a little ice all the way from the drift he was stuck in to up and over the hill that he slid down earlier. I seriously couldn't believe the grip these tires had in the snow.

For the record: The h2 I pulled had changed out his tires to more of a street type setup that just could not make it up this hill and eventually got really stuck at the bottom in a drift.

Honestly John, I've been so pleased with these tires that I really doubt I would buy MTR's again over them. They released the snow and mud so well they seemed unstoppable. Another guy had just put the same setup on his H1 and was barrelling over everything.

Wow!

Sounds like they perform as good as they look.

Maybe I pulled the trigger too fast. I guess I could always unload them on ebay. (I was getting a little nervous w/out a spare, and I'm sure none to be found in my one horse town.)

Anyway sounds like the PJ's are great.

At the risk of repeating my self. PJ's are the way to go. The PJ's drive very well on road, lots better then swampers, and are great off road (hopefully someday I'll get to find out first hand). If you unloaded your MTR's which as you know are in very short supply you could probably almost cover the cost of PJ's. JSA_3 if you want the name of the place that I found PJ's for pretty cheap (282.00 per tire) email me of the list and I'll send you the link. As far as runflats are concerned; I have the 16.5 Cepek rims, with the dirt grips, and no run flats. Some people have problems with, them some dont. My truck did not come with runflats, and I cant say I wish that it had. Aside from the usual problems with runflats, do you guys know how much more it costs to have tires put on a truck with runflats? I got my tire mounted and balanced to about 350.00 as oposed to the 800.00 that it would have cost with the runflats. Being that I have one pices wheels I is a lot harder to try and mount the runflats and tires, Buckeye, has two piece wheels which if I had to guess makes the tire change cost a lot less.

Great info thanks Carey. Had no idea on mounting and balancing costs. (I do have the 17" two piece wheel though)

My biggest concerns were/are Not having a spare with 16k on my tires that are starting to show signs of wear, and limited availability of the MTR with no production date set.

After your's and Buck's take on the PJ I may sell 3, keep 1 as a spare. Then when the time comes find a set of PJ's.

Actually working with the 2pc wheels is more costly. Eveything has to be done by hand, no tire machine to mount up the tires. The runflats are a BITCH to work with. Forget removing them unless you have a runflat compressor. Some folks suggest you can compress the runflat with a ratched strap but I don't believe it. I tried one day and I mean one day (hours) and could not make it happen to get them out... Beadlocks are the way to go if you can get them. They are a simple rubber ring that is 1000% easier to work with and locks the bead internally.

I just spent the day setting up a 2nd set of 2pc steel wheels with my GSA/Runflats today. Plan on running these day to day on the street (and in to the ground) and use the PJ's for off-roading.

Neither set is balanced but I am using Centramatic balancers. The work ok on the PJ's, pretty much rocks to hell after 55mph. The GSA's run perfect up to 75/80 so far.

I could not hep notice that it is a "D" rated tire. I think that for the type of vehicle we are placing them on they would have to be "E" rated. Why would a Hummer owner put a "D" rated tire on their truck?

The larger PJ's are E rated tires. The exeption is the 37x12.5x17. I dont know why that has a D rating, my truck has 16.5 Cepeks on it and the Dirt Grips on my truck have an E rating.
