Personally I am going with the auto. Mine will be used primarily onroad and with traffic the way it is, don't want a stick. Looking forward to offroading with it and think I would be more comfortable doing it with the auto as well. As far as towing goes, sounds like the thread by Firm about his test drive has cleared up that issue.

I honestly don't see much advantage to going with a standard transmission. While offroad a standard is just not as smooth as an auto. With the auto you can "ride" your brakes while crawling over obstacles (2 foot driving). It just easier with the auto.

Obviously on road I would think the auto would be friendlier to most as well.

I'm going with auto as well for the same reasons listed above. Plus, I don't want my wife burning up a new H3 clutch learning how to drive a stick.

i've been driving stick for 24 yrs and i have total contral of my truck. my wife has auto and the only reason she likes auto cause its easy.
i notice her breaks need to be change more often then mine and i tow alot of heavy equipment

Automatic. Especially if you're going to do any off-roading.

1.) Total control of the vehicle
2.) Tend to pay more attention while driving because your always doing something (less chance to eat or talk on the cell and drive.)
3.) Better acceleration, smoother acceleration(if you know what you're doing)
4.) Less wear on the brakes
5.) Better gas mileage
6.) Everyone won't ask to drive your car.

*If you can drive a stick, you can drive anything!

It's June 15th and you sign yourself up on a Moab thread invite. WHHHOOOOHHHHOOOO! you get your new H3 all ready to go and make your drive to meet scarry H2 owners like Dennis and Drty http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.
1st trail of your trip (Hell's Revenge)
You start by climbing a five foot wall to get on the trail and than make your way up a narrow fin. It scares the crap out of you, but you keep enjoying the scenery and can't wait to se whats around the next corner.
Than you see "IT" There it is, the first long climb.
Picture yourself in a manual trans H3 in Moab. Your driving up this super steep incline that is about 150 yards long and has a drop off on both sides. The only thing you can see in front of you is the sky when all of the sudden you didn't ride the clutch just rite to get over that little 12" wall in the middle of your climb. the truck kills. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif OMG!!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
You just lost all of your power steering and brakes.... you are now sliding all the way down into this ravine with your seat cushion firmly sucked up into your rear. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (known as pucker factor) That's why we are going with manual. After 4 trips to Moab and witnessing manual vehicles on some of these inclines... NO WAY!!!! For such a little difference in cost, it's a great idea not only for safety, but also for resale value down the road. I'm not saying that people can't get a manul trans and not have fun. I know people (Shaggy for one) that can drive that 150,000 mile P/U with a manual trans up some of the hardest stuff I've seen. But just like everyone, there's that one time you kill the truck, and down you go. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I would have to agree with Timgco, nothing worse then being a little off/ or slow with the clutch in a bad place like down a hill on ice, http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif and that second to long in nuetral and your in a 360 spin, http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif Dtotal control is using todays technolagy, to save your ass. My totoya has a bunch of dents that may have been avoided if it was an auto with traction control. Both my curent vehicles are manual, and it is time for the automatic, getting to old to be ****ting my pants. exceptoins would be Porche 911, or the likes, then the manual is the fun it desreves to be. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

To each his own, but if you are going to wheel your truck at all it's a no-brainer. There are basically no "real" advantages to getting the standard transmission in this type vehicle. It's not a sports car, the brake issue is honestly moot, and the wear on the drive train by down shifting will cost a lot more than replacing pads.
