The plastic retaining strap for my gas cap broke. Anyone have a simple solution for repair or replacement? I would prefer to not have to buy a whole new gas cap.

You could melt it back together, but that prolly won't hold for long.

How about this: http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-55300-HELP-Fuel-Tether/dp/B001HZNK04

That's a pretty good find, Guruerror. I'm impressed. But the product description gives little information and the one reviewer complained it only fits the type of gas cap with a "narrow top." What's the size of narrow? </rhetorical question off>

I am thinking of finding a tightly wound stiff spring with the proper I.D. and pushing the two ends into it, Chinese Finger Trap style. Something in this set should work:

Next, I'll secure the joint with some Adhesive Lined Heat Shrink Tubing like this stuff:

I'm hoping the spring will provide some stability to the broken joint and the tubing should keep both pieces held together. It just might work. ;)

I can't believe there is actually a thread on fixing this ;)

that sh1t wont melt back together, but i'm sure you could put a glob of plastic epoxy on it. Autozone carries it. I used it on spider cracks on a pool sand filter where the head selector valve bolts to the tank- that was squirting out a 30' stream of water at 24 PSI. Its held up for 3 years so far.

you could find a place that does sonic welding....welding plastic together...but that will probably cost the same price as a new cap...just buy a new one.

Just replace the whole thing, they're on Ebay for $32.00

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-Hummer-H2-H3-Factory-OEM-Gas-Cap-Fuel-Cap-Factory-OEM-GM-C57-3z-Qty-1-/200657652615?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &fits=Model%3AH2&vxp=mtr&hash=item2eb820cb87

I say get one before they are no longer available.
