I am on my 5th and 6th H2 (they are both currently in my garage), never done any performance mods to any of them. One of the recent ones (2008) I just bought has this GM aftermarket intake already installed. The Part # is 17801774 and it comes non-oiled.

I am curious if anyone has had any experience/feedback with this particular unit, compared to a K&N, Volant etc... From what I have been reading here it seems like some folks have had problems with the K&N because of the oiling. This one works fantastic on this truck. I have never had one that runs as good, the throttle response it fantastic. I have had a brand new '09 H2, and this '08 with 36k miles runs so much better. It also has the GM Performance cat-back exhaust installed so maybe that helps too.

Does this set up need to also be tuned? I am the third owner and the second owner I bought it from had no idea if it was done. I am not gonna screw with it, just curious as I think I am going to take the whole setup off and install in another H2. I just bought a 15k mile 2008 H2 that I'm gonna keep for a while. It has tires/rims and other mods, but doesn't have the CAI/exhaust..... I'll tell ya, I sell em, miss em, and always come back for more!!

How can you tell? Is it because of the reddish color? I watched a youtube video on cleaning a K&N and when he oiled it after it was cleaned it turned a red color.

On the first above filter pic, I cleaned it really well using the K&N and it's 2 days dry now. I did not oil it, that is the color it came out. It was a fairly dirty brown when I first took it off, but still had a red color to it. The other side though, now after cleaning is kinda yellowish, here's a pic...

I wonder if I took the factory oil off, although every link I search on with the above part number said it's non-oiled...

Yes the oil is red in color and the filter when 100% clean is almost white

So I sprayed the yellow part of the filter with the oil that came with the K&N filter cleaning kit. It didn't really turn it to the all red color. I didn't spray that much on there though. It seems like it needs way too much oil to get back to the red color, that's if it even changes to to the red which I am starting to doubt. The oil in the K&N kit is a red color too and it wasn't really doing the job.

I am still confused on this one. I have been calling different GM service shops and no one seems to be familiar with this setup either. The filter seems to come stock with the red color and this link says "The free-breathing air filter is non-oiled - which means it won't interfere with the computer sensors".

I was bothered that I oiled it and didn't want to drive it. I just ordered a new one from my local GM parts dealer, was $115. I am curious to see what color it will come. From what GM says above about the oil too, I bet is why many on here have had troubles with the K&N oiled CAI systems.

Yes too much oil causes issues with the mass air flow sensor, not enough oil doesnt filter properly. Its a fine line for sure.

The brand new filter arrived today and it's a bright red too. Doesn't seem to have any oil residue on it when I run my finger over it and touch glass.... I wonder if GM just has a red element...

oh also when I picked this up, the guy at Quirk NH parts said the H2 parts are starting to get harder to find now...

I don't know, just wanted to throw that out there...

Nice looking unit! I've never seen one before. I wouldn't think it would offer enough filtration for dusty offroad excursions.

I think it looks really nice too. In all the posts I went through here, I didn't see one either. That's the main reason why I keep posting follow ups even though the thread didn't get many replies. I think it's a great alternative to the oily K&N's etc out there for people thinking of going the CAI route. I would definitely put one on a future H2. Could be psychological but I really think it works too, throttle response wise anyway. Switching it from one H2 to the other, I do think it was noticeable both ways...
