I got the letters from someone selling them on Ebay. He seems to sell them regularly. He shows 2 still available. I bought 2 sets for myself (they are cheap) just in case I ever need to replace a letter. I believe these are the real letters that come on the H2 grill. They are very nice self stick thick molded plastic.

I agree Raster, but if they aren't next to each other, I don't think most would know the difference. Give it time and there will be more and more people that can.

Hey richk, how did you stick the letters up?

richk
07-28-2005, 01:54 AM
I used a ruler and masking tape to make sure the letters where centered. Just measure down 3 inches and place a piece of masking tape and then use that to align the top of the letters.

I removed my GM stickers tonite. Looks much better. WD40 worked great to remove the leftover sticky glue. Looks much nicer now with only the H3 logo.

skeeter,

Do you have the link for the one with the self stick tape? I looked at his other items and he just has the non-stick ones. After further inspection from the previous links, the letters look a bit different. Interesting.

I want them, but want the adhesive on the back.

I wish I had realized the ones I ordered were the non self-stick ones.

So, any ideas on how to install them? Does 3M make a double stick tape that is strong enough to hold them on yet thin enough that the letters won't stick out too far? Any ideas on where to find it?

Thanks.

I have seen some double sided tape out there that is about as thin as scotch tape but very sticky. I would just watch out for them when washing it.

I'll try to drop by the auto parts store and see what I can find.

Being that my H3 will never go to a carwash and will always be washed by hand I don't see a problem with double stick tape...but who knows.

Thanks.

I wonder if GM trademarked the shape of the Hummer letters; especially the "R." If they did, then they might have told the guy to stop selling. They did the same thing with the Corvette. They are known as Corvette letters with an actual Corvette font.
Just wondering; don't know for sure.

I attached my letters last night. I had messed up and bought the non-self-stick ones so I bought some 1" wide 3M double sided "super strength" auto emblem tape from the autoparts store last night. Then I stuck the letters to the tape and cut around them with an exacto knife. Worked out great.

Sorry for the pictures...they were taken at night in my garage and didn't turn out very good.

Hi All,

For all of you with the actual self adhesive ones, how thick is the double sided tape. I installed mine with double sided tape for auto trim repair from my local auto parts store. Did the exacto knife trime as well. However if you are close to the vehicle and look at an angle you can see the foam (for example looking down from top). Is this how everyone's is turning out?

Other then that they look great!

Thanks for the tip!

woyster_h3

MisterE: I can see the foam on mine if you get up close as well. This was the thinnest double sided mounting tape I could find. Maybe someone that got the self-stick ones will chime in and tell us about theirs.

HummerNewbie: There isn't any recessed imprint of the letters in the grille. There is a small recess on the bumper but not the grille. The letters just stick on the smooth, flat, chromed bars of the grille.

H3OH: Fixed it.

HummerNewbie
08-04-2005, 01:36 PM
Oh, I knew the letters recessed into the bumper and thought they did on the grill. I now remember discussions a while back about why the didn't have the letters on the grill at all. My bad http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

The self-stick ones have clear adhesive on the back. It's thin, but not as thin as scotch tape. I emailed the seller and he said all the self-stick letters are sold and he only has plain ones available (and only a limited number of those remaining). The letters look great, glad I was able to turn everyone onto this. Maybe someone over at GM will take notice and start doing this at the factory. When I was over at the Hummer dealer the other day I looked at the letters on the H2 and ours are exactly the same.

MisterE

Thanks for the heads up!

Major Kudos to the first person that can find that thin mounting tape on the web.

I know of some thin stuff like that, but the stuff I saw wouldn't last outdoors.

Thanks Again,

I brought my H3 to a dealer early this week to have a few accessories put on. One of which were the HUMMER letters. Before I left, I noticed they were loose. I asked the guy and he said that's normal. Well, I went on my way and started polishing up the grille when I got home. It took all of 5 minutes before the R fell off. I decided to do this myself. I went to 4 auto stores and Home Depot and no one carries 3M Auto tape. I bought the knock off and I also picked up Loctite Epoxy Gel for Metal/Plastic from Home Depot. After using the auto tape, I realized that it wasn't going to work. You can see the tape if looking down on it. So, I opted for the Epoxy. I had to remove each letter, remove the crap glue they used and cleaned with Windex. I then mixed the Epoxy and went one letter at a time. I couldn't be happier with the job. It just goes to show that sometimes you'll do a better job than the dealer -- not to mention, I'm the opposite of handy. So, for me to do it, anyone can do it.

The letters are on there rock solid and I have no fear of them coming off. (although I purchased an extra set for piece of mind).

Thanks to all in this thread for the advice.

If you went to the dealer I went to, then it's not so tough! If my letters come off (which I don't think they will), I think I should be able to remove the glue without a problem. In areas where the glue got messy, I was able to remove with windex and Mother's Chrome/Aluminum polish.

I can't imagine the grille without the letters. Just looks awesome.

Well, this is the third time a letter has come off. The first time was due to the poor job done at the dealer. Not sure how the second came off, but I found it while fixing my fog lamps. Yesterday, my E came off at the car wash. I suspect a drying rag caught it. I've had terrible luck at car washes - first the passenger's mirror gets ripped off and now this. I don't blame the car wash on the letters, because they aren't recessed. I used an epoxy to attach them. With the letter off, you could see the epoxy had lost it's grip. I was able to run my finger offer it and it just pealed off. Luckily, I bought a second set for just this reason. My luck it couldn't have been an M. Anyway, I went to get another backup set and can't find them on eBay.

Has anyone found good solid, think 3M auto tape online. This time, I want to be sure they don't come off. I'm going to leave a strip of masking tape in the car and just cover the letters when I get it washed. I go through a "touch-free" car wash, because it's just too damn cold here in NY to wash my car.

My HUMMER look awesome yesterday, but the missing letter bugged the hell out of me!

Mine are holding on fine. After being through heat in the Summer and now Winter, to include the elements of salt spray from the back of other tires and high pressure "Touch less" car washes, I have no problems. I am not using 3M double sided tape. I used a industrial clear epoxy that comes in a dual needle like applicator and must be mixed and cured for about 10 minutes before applying. The drying time is 12 to 14 hours in moderate temperature. This stuff is no joke. Check my thread on the "Photos of your H3", under Lil red H3. I have seen other people use double sided tape and you can see the thickness of the white tape sticking out of the side of the letters and I think it looks "cheap" The clear epoxy leaves no obvious signs of "home made modification" when done right and done with patience.

Good to know they stand up to the test of time
