I was wondering if it was possible to take a Gobi Roof Rack and convert the mounting brackets to make it fit an H1? Is the Gobi Roof Rack too small in dimension, so much so, that it would look out of place on an H1? Also, are there mounting brackets available to allow you to mount the Gobi onto an H1? Just been trying to figure out what I can utilize from my H2 in the event I end up getting an H1 later on this year.

It would be an interesting exercise.

According to the Gobi install instructions, the rack itself mounts onto the tracks that also mount the crossbars (if your vehicle is so equipped).

What you would end up doing is this:

1) Mount either a Yakima or Thule rack system on your H1. For more information on how to do that, visit this site:
http://www.azhog.org/thule_racks_h1/thule_rack_for_the_h1.htm

2) Unbolt the Gobi rack's feet that go into the roof tracks.

3) Install or bolt a Yakima basket or Thule basket locking bracket (sold at bike stores as parts) onto the Gobi rack, and then onto the Yakima or Thule.

I wouldn't do that. I have had the Yakima rack with a 32" tire mounted in it and it slid around. If you put the Gobi rack on there with that mount and a 37" tire, you're looking for trouble! If you want to go with the Gobi rack , send Gobi an E-Mail asking them about an H1 rack.

Gobi doesn't make one for H1's.

I unederstand that Gobi doesn't have a rack for the H1... yet. But if you like the look of the Gobi, send them an E-mail asking about their future racks and when it will be available.
... my 2 cents.

I sincerely doubt that they will make one for the H1.

Look at the statistics. There are roughly 10,000 H1's on the road today, from the 1992 Limited Edition to the 2004 models.

Compare that to the first model year of the H2 - they sold 4-5 times the number of H1's in the first run.

Add to that the fact that SMA, Predator Motorsports, and others sell a rack that fits. And - less than 40 percent of all H1's have a rack, mainly due to the Soft Top's in existence.

IMHO, it's not cost effective for them to do one for the H1. I might be wrong, but I doubt they would do it.

I guess the big question would be, can they fabricate mounting brackets to the gutter of an H1 that would work with their current H2 racks... I guess I'll just ask Sandra myself when I get a chance...
