We just bought an '04 H2 and have loved every minute of it. However, with the navigation system you are only able to control it when stopped or travelling under 8 miles an hour. This is a pain as my husband loves to press buttons while we ride. Has anyone found a way to fix this or bypass that problem so that we can play with the nav while driving?

I have the Pioneer NAV system in my H2 (03) - you can only program the location (trip) while the rig has its brake on (Safety factor) - it states that you should not program during operation of your vehicle. You can change some views and do a few other things while the vehicle is in motion. Most NAV system built into vehicle (not handheld or portable) will implement safety system to prevent you from looking away and programming while in motion.

I have the Alpine Nav system in my H2 and a Lexus with the Nav. Same thing goes for all, must be stopped to perform major functions.

It's a legal thing.

I have the Pioneer nav, and I have no such safety feature. I was keying a route in when I realized I went over a VW Beetle at about 65 mph.....oopps.

2003 Pewter H2, Tire relocator, painted hard tire cover, billet gas cover, MC2 chrome hood handles, stainless bumper letters, 15% tinted front windows,pioneer nav/dvd, xm sat, headrest monitors, tv tuner, defenderworx hood latches, side vents, marker bezels, and chrome MC2 factory style wheels .

On aftermarket Nav systems like the Pioneer and the Alpine, you can just ground the parking brake wire that goes to the nav unit. Some places even put a switch in so that you can choose whether to have it require the parking brake or bypass it altogether. I was just wondering if there was any such thing for the factory unit. thanks

GM really has stuck their head up their anus on the 04 huh...

I can tell you from using the NAV on the 03 Escalade (which is the same model) that you absolutely could program it while driving (and well above 8 MPH).

Granted this almost got me into several rear-end collisions, so I guess the safety feature is there for a reason...

But really, did GM take into consideration a passenger programming while on a drive? NO

Or did GM take into consideration programming the NAV while on cruise control on the highway...NO

GM on the 2004 Hummer...Rectal-Cranial Inversion..

Fix the NAV! and the Antenna, and the cup holders...should I go on...

On my old 2001 S500 Sport,,,can program NAV while driving and on my new 2004 S55 AMG,,,you can still program while driving! American car manufacturers really need to get their **** together. The H2 is the first (had an 03 Yellow Adventure,,,just upgraded to and 04 White Lux, Nav, Air Susp, Sunroof) American car that i've bought since about 1980. Only the Viper is on my list next, and thats about it.

- 2004 S55 AMG Benz - 496hp/516 tq. (White with Tan int)
- 2004 White H2 Lux, Air Susp, Sunroof, NAV(****ty compared to S55)
- 2004 Nissan Path SE, Stillen intake and chip, 18" Chromes with Nitto Proxes ST, Piaa Bulbs all around

You can actually have the installer disable that safety feature like Kevin. I like the safety feature. Nothing worst than a swerving Hummer on the road.

Only thing I don't like about my set up(like yours and Kev's) The bloody thing starts to sag down during off road use. That sort of railing attachment in the back has to be really tight.

I was thinking of re-installing it at the front dash area for a Heads up type set up like what NVR is mentioning.

The G35's don't let you change the NAV stuff when you're in motion, but there's a simple fix for the G35's so maybe you could figure it out for the H2 with this info:
There's something called a VSS in the glovebox (where the DVD NAV drive is). On the harness there are two wires, you cut those 2 wires and connect them to a SPST (single pole single throw) switch. When you want normal operation just leave the switch in the "on" position. If you need to enter a destination while moving, you flip the switch off, now the NAV thinks that you are not moving, it might loose you a little on the map, but you can enter the destination and then flip the switch to the on position. Here is the exact publication from freshalloy.com for the G35 to give you an idea on how to do it
It's easy. Take off teh glove box, then find the 3 multiwire plugs that plug into the back of the DVD Rom. Remove the one farthest toward the passenger side. It will have a white/Green wire there. Cut that wire and put some wire on each end of the cut wire. Run thes 2 new wires to a switch. When you want to program while driving, just flip the switch, program away, then flip the switch back. While the switch is off, it will lose you position on the road, since the car will think you are no longer moving, but as soon as you turn it back on it will find you again right away.

I used the switch that was already in the glove box (coupe only I think) the switch that turns off the trunk switch. I mean, why would I ever want to turn off the trunk switch, I will never have my car valeted, and that is the only reason it is there. So mine still looks totally factory, and the switch is factory and hidden in the glove box.
