View Full Version : Max 80mph at 3500RPM??

On round trip LA - Las Vegas, in some inclines, my H2 will NOT go faster than 80mph with my foot literally pedal to the metal. RPM showed exactly 3500. Tried pumping the accelerator, tow button, dropping from D to 3 -- all to no avail. 3 Adults, 2 kids, small luggage, zero cargo... Not towing anything... Full tank of gas.... Anyone experienced this before? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif (Btw, minivan, pos sedan, etc. were passing me on the left... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif)

In addition to the damn roaring fan clutch (occurs 80% of the time, at temp 76 degrees and above) -- which still occurs with what is now the 2nd warranty-replaced new fan clutch in 2 months -- I think my H2 is a lemon!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

It's obviously your fault. You were driving too fast and bouncing too much http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif You don't happen to have a lift and more aggressive tires do you?

Very funny. Mine is stock (except for some beautiful one-of-a-kind blings http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), less than 6K miles, 4 months old.

The point with yours was you spent what, $5K? on lift & tires, love your H2, but will sell it because you don't want to spend another few hundred bucks to improve the only thing bothering you (tie rods)? Does not compute. Did you sell it yet, or r u gonna try those sleeves?

Too much weight in the passenger seat. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

With my roof rack, heavy bumpers + winch, 37" tires, and enough lead, scuba tanks, and equipment to support 5 divers, and camping gear for 3 days, as well as beer and ice, plus passengers, I was still able to get my speedometer to read over 100 MPH, and this is with 37's and my speedometer is not recalibrated, so actual MPH were greater.

Something does not sound right. At 80 MPH you should not be anywhere near 3500 RPM if in overdrive. How steep of a grade were you climbing? Prior to super charging my H2 a lot of vehicle were passing me up the hills in Lake Tahoe area. If you use the tow button the H2 won't shift so much.

With the supercharger installed, nobody can pass me now.

It's most likely from the big-headed fair-weather Laker fan head you've got. Or that load of aerodynamically inefficient bling-bling crap you've got Elmered on your LaLa street rig and the fact that the driver is gravitationally disadvantaged.http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Also, you might want to make sure that someone hasn't latched onto you from behind and is leeching a free ride up the hill.
Check your undercarriage for one of those faggy little hybrid toys. Maybe we all got lucky and you ran over Tim Robbins & Susan Sarandon.http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Something doesn't sound good here. Unless you were going straight up the mountain, you should not have had an issue with breaking 80 mph. In CO i get up to the mountains and have no problem breaking 100 with a full bus and gear. The only mod I have done is a hypertech programmer.

Bad gas?
Bad fuel filter?
How's your air filter?

I'm reaching here. I guess it's back to the dealer. good luck.

I am guessing that it was a pretty steep grade and it had already downshifted from D to 3rd on its own. 3500 rpm at 80 mph in 3rd may not be unreasonable, but I'm not sure.

I remember some of those grades from Las Vegas back to LA years ago and I'm not too surprised at what you experienced. I guess my thought is why wasn't 80 mph enough for you. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Not to drag this away from your thread, just to answer your question: I was just trying to keep a sense of humor, sorry. Yes we sold it, but I am still very interested in the fixes, either by GM or others because I may be very interested in getting the new and improved 2006+ version. You know, the one with the Duramax http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
For what it's worth, I agree with Texas Red and others, with your rpm being so high and your speed max'd at 80 it sounds like you were in 3rd for some reason. Perhaps pushing the tow haul mode in and out during the climb confused it? http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Great, just great. A dozen replies -- not a single answer. Why is it all of my posts are treated as big jokes by all of you? I am genuinely upset abt my truck here!!

The H2 is at the dealer as of this morning. Today is one day I'm complaining abt LA's perfect weather, as the ROAR will not kick in if it doesn't get warm enough outside (its 75degrees now).

Bad Dawg, my condolence on your loss. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Rather than the Dmax, you should get Breathless' 750 hp H2. Its only $69K!

Det, I reached 100mph on the flat stretch right outside Vegas (got to play tag with a black H2 http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif). Its the incline that's a prob.

timgco, I am asking the mighty Mike at Cerritos to personally tear apart my H2..

kdio, you are as bad as KenP -- always showing off your sc! You know, I've heard that many sc owners r actually trying to compensate for lack of... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Texas Red, 80mph is not enough when a minivan, then a pos sedan high-beamed you from behind to pass!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

austoak, Dan, my beauty queen is so slim & trim I can carry her with one hand... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Drty, a guy at Cerritos Hummer wants to buy my custom-made bling-bling beauty just this morning. No joke! In Vegas, I got shot by many tourists' cameras! I'll post photo for your flaming enjoyment soon.

Hey, wasn't it you who managed to get GM to take your first one back as a lemon? This would be the 5th or 6th time I'm bringing in mine for the same ROAR problem. Instruction please!

Have you checked the air filter lately? Sounds like a plugged one!

KenP
05-21-2004, 01:56 AM
Dan, glad you said that. I was thinking about something one might pick up at 7-11 http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif.

Seriously, it sounds as if you were in third.
The truck is not happy. What percent is the grade of the hill. It sounds as if it is long and constant. The truck would downshift and never upshift.

Of course, it could be a "module". I think they all break. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Albie
05-21-2004, 02:06 AM
Well when the speed limit is 55, you shouldn't be going that fast.....LOL yeah the Baker grade is pretty step, but I have hit around 85 going up it.

H2Finally
05-21-2004, 04:06 AM
The question is was the 85mph by choice or by limit? I thought the truck should've DOWN shifted when I told it I want more power. 3500 RPM seemed low -- the truck should be able to hit 5000rpm for a short burst of power when my foot reached the bottom of the pedal??

I'll know tomorrow what the verdict is. I would welcome air filter or xyz module problem rather than be told, "oh that's normal performance & noise for the H2"!! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Texas Red

I can't read the rpm on the pic, and with no grade indication it doesn't mean much.

I was just thinking that if it was already in 3rd (due to grade) and was already at 3500 and 80 mph, the computer may not let it shift down into 2nd no matter how hard you floored it -- and for good reason.

With the H2 I have also seen marked influence of headwind versus tailwind too. The H2 is a block pushing a lot of air at 80 mph on the straight and level.

Klaus
05-21-2004, 10:05 AM
Are you running a performance tune from a programmer, or is your truck running the stock programming?

H2Finally
05-21-2004, 02:19 PM
Klaus, my 04 has the "updated" programming done by dealer. At cool weather (when the fan clutch did not come in play), the improvement from stock is quite remarkable. Imo, if everyone bothered to update their programming, programmers will be out of business soon.

But the ROAR prob occurs quite a while before that.

AlecW, I hit 100mph too at the straight level stretch. It's the incline thats problematic.

TexasRed, most prob it was already at 3rd due to grade, since when I downshift manually, it made no diff. The prob is as I said, a minivan and sedan passed me easily. Perhaps I should just drive slower http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. Or perhaps I really should just get my sc now http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

H2 Bill
05-21-2004, 03:14 PM
I have driven the same route many times and it is a steep, long grade. My H2 would constantly hunt back and forth for gears and it drove me nuts too. That was the main reason I supercharged mine! Now you can fly up the same grades and not worry about having anyone pass you if you are so inclined http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I have done 100+ on the Baker grade.

Ahhhhhh....NOW I understand. Tell her that you will get better mpg's (if you can keep your foot out of it)! She needs to know that it will be well worth it.. it's much easier to get out of the way of other fast moving vehicles, which is especially important if you have childred with you...she can get home from the mall faster so that you won't know where she has been...you won't have to spend as much time couped up in the H2 with the screaming kids because you can go much faster....
