I guess after 15 years of begging, the NHTSA decides to give them a break http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Yeah, i also think there is a market for a cheap rugged 4x4. IMO, the Xterra and the upcoming FJCruiser are targeting that segment. I think the Xterra has been doing well and the FJCruiser will do very well. Meanwhile, the rest of the other manufacturers are into car based SUVs http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I like the Xterra, I think it is a great vehicle and good value for money. But it lacks the "ruggedness" of the Crosslander or D90 in my view.

Not sure about the FJ yet, seems to be styling exercise gone wrong to me.

I realize that it is only a small percentage of "SUV" owners actually go off-road, and even smaller percentage that actually tests the vehicles limits. But in terms of image, the "off-road" look/utility/etc is very popular and increasingly so. I'm surprised that no US manufacturers apart from Jeep and Hummer are targeting it, and it's debatable how well they are actually doing it. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The XTERRA is ****ing Pussy and does not belong in any serious 4x4 discussion. I usually dont go there, but I'm sick of pulling XTERRA's up and out of **** all day long with my little stock Jeep........... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

GM and Ford were stupid to get rid of the broncos and K5 Blazers. Both were bad ass, tough, easy to modify, cheap, and two door! Not to mention the older ones had full removable roofs! There was demand for these truck for over 40 years and what did they think, guys all of a sudden quit wanting rugged 4x4's???? Now you have to pay 60 grand to get a full size capable 4x4. We still dont get the drop top feature. I have always felt the dropped the ball when they went to tahoes and expeditions and didn't just offer a two door, roofles model that shares all the chassis, and other parts w/ trucks like they used to. It seems like it wouldn't cost them that much and it would hit a big market.
