CA wheeling

I'm with a group near Big Bear California (actually in Arrowhead if you're familiar with the area) that loves to wheel. We have members with Jeeps, Unimogs, suzuki, toyota and we'd love to have hummer folk. I'm a jeep guy looking to buy an H3... anyway. We primarily do rockcrawling, but we do absolutly every trail in the area. If you need a friend to wheel with, drop by our club's site and post up that you're looking to go out.

There are several groups that frequent the Big Bear area. I wheel with a group of H1 owners and we were up there Sat the 17th (had 13 trucks -- that's too many IMHO). Getting together sometime would be fun...but you should post on the So Cal Hummer site, a little more local:

just checked out your web site and some of your rigs...very nice. Seems the guy that started the rock skullz site hates Hummers (how original). Well, I hate onions, so whoever brings the sandwiches better not have onions on them. Lets go wheeling sometime and not get to hung up on what people are driving.

Johnson Valley has always been a target of mine -- haven't made it there yet. There are some pretty hard-core trails (sledgehammer/jackhammer) I doubt an H1 or H2 could fit. The H3 may fit but it will take a serious beating. I've seen some pretty serious built rigs looking worse for wear after hitting those two trails. Seems like a fun area but our trucks may be limited by physics.

They said Johnson Valley has 140,000 acres.......That's a lot of wheelin'!!!!

The rigs they showed on Sledgehammer/Jackhammer were fully modified. H3 is narrow enough, but needs a serious lift to do that trail.

But there has got to be others! Sure looks like beautiful country.

I know the ohv park is huge, I was just speaking of the trails it is best known for. Let's get over to the So Cal forum and put together a trip.

He doesn't hate hummers, he just doesn't understand what they're made for. If it isn't for hardcore rockcrawling then he's lost as to why it exists. But, he started a rockcrawling club, so I guess thats the ideology you need.

He changed up his views after a trip in a H3. Who wouldn't?

I'll admit, I was similarly minded till working with Military H1s and driving a pair of H3s. You'll want to check out Off-Road.com January 1st. I did a review of the H3 that SHOULD (in theory) publish for our January issue.

I see there is a lot of interest in JV. I've been out to Johnson Valley a few times myself in my previous Jeep that was on 35s. Its a blast. There are a TON of fun desert trails and several dry lake beds that make for a fun place to race. But, yes, JV is known for its seriously difficult rocky trails. Jeeps generally need to be on at least 35s and should at least have a rear locker, but I'd recommend front and rear lockers. You will have to be prepared for body damage on anything less. In a longer rig, you'd need at least 37s for sledgehammer, which is one of the easier trails there. I'm sure an H1 or H2 would make it, but yea as someone else mentioned here, those being big trucks, you'd get bit by a few rocks along the way. Some of the trails out there, you'd need 40" MT/R goodyears or better, and even then you'll have a hard time.

I think an H3 with a Rough Country lift and 37s would breaze through sledge actually, no body hits I'd bet. You won't see me doing it though.

The H1s and H2s are a wee big and heavy for tight rocky trails, at least for my taste. The H1s in particular were designed for military uses, which I can say from experience, are totally different than what the public generally needs for a 4 wheeling hobby. I think the H3s though are going to roam the trails fine!

Although, I did say that I didn't care for the plastic door handles and grill. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Its different when you write for magazines and web sites. If you don't say at least something bad, you actually get people who will take the time to email you and call you names and make odd remarks, ask if you work for HUMMER or if they paid you to say all that. You're also not taken seriously by your editors. I had to find something... but I doubt that little dig is going to prevent anyone from buying an H3. Hopefully aftermarket takes care of my single complaint anyway.

there's a group heading to the Big Bear area this weekend (Sun the 8th). We'll have 5 to 7 H1's, 1 H2 and 1 H3 (one of the H1 owners just bought the H3 -- maiden voyage). Hopefully there will be lots of snow to play in.

I flew by Big Bear yesterday. There is not as much snow as I would have expected. Seemed to be more over in the Wrightwood mountain area. Mind you I could be completely wrong, this observation was from 9000 feet traveling between Barstow and Palmdale. Have Fun!!
