Paint problems?

Hey everyone I,m a new owner of a Boulder Grey H3. What do you think of the paint quality? Ive noticed alot of debri in the paint, especially the roof around the sunroof.I,m thinkin of taking it back to the dealer. Thanks for your input.

I've a black H3 and I think that black is the color you notice any "disturbances" in the paint easiest. And yea... I think that the paint quality is slightly below the standard. But below the German standard... I had a Grand Cherorkee in 2001 which didn't have a high quality paint job neither... so I got used to it. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

On a Mercedes Benz (unless it was manufactured in the US like my former ML320), a BMW or a Porsche I wouldn't accept the paint quality...

This was not meant as an offense, but a plain realization. For some reason US car manufactureres seem to not pay that much attention to paint job quality as European car manufacturers do. I am not saying that it is "totally unacceptable"... but it simply doesn't seem that clean as German cars do... again... didn't mean to offend anyone... The paint in the door jams seems to be really thin, I have a scape caused by the seat belt snapping back

Funny, that as I was washing my Boulder Grey I found 2 places with debris in the paint, and both were on the roof. One was right by the sunroof and looks like a piece of dark metal about twice the size of this cap O with the paint "splayed" around it. Should I just leave it alone or make the dealer aware of it?

I noticed that my black H3 has the "orange peel" look to it. Anyone else notice that on their black H3? How about on any other color?

Yeah, every one that I looked at had orange peel. That's the standard here I believe, just not sure about the particles in the paint, particularly the roofs.

My bouder grey has several areas of debris in paint. I noticed the areas @ delivery. The salesman advised me to go to the bodyshop for repair. I am concerned over others having similar problem. The rocker panel paint area IS EXTREMELY soft. I have had many areas of rock impaction and paint damage. I have corrected the condition by installing mud flaps and clearguard film on rockers. I am concerned over long term paint quality.

Wow, being the "Paint Process Engineer" at the Oshawa plant that won the GoldMetal award for best paint appearance from JD Power, I thought I was pretty critical. When I got my truck I went over it with a fine tooth comb and was VERY IMPRESSED with the quality of the paint job. I actually measured the orange peel, gloss and DOI (distinction of image) on my truck and all were well over the GM specs we use at our plant. I did find one piece of dirt on the roof also, but a quick sand and polish (dirt was in the clearcoat)and it was gone.

The O spec with the paint "splayed" around it is a crater, caused by some type of contaminant. If it is covered with clearcoat, you could just cover it up with touch up paint and will not get any worse (rust-thru or delamination).

For you guys who have had their vehicles shipped via rail, make sure what you are seeing is not rail dust damage. Rail dust can be removed with a clay bar or oxylic acid, and should be done by the dealer. There is a labor op code he can pull to perform this rail dust removal.
Generally, anything greater than a 12 hour drive from the plant is shipped via rail.

No, I bought it from Lynch because they accepted my GMID. It will be serviced by Bachman though.

Kinda long story, but I had purchased a red H3 and found a black substance all over it. That was on a saturday, didnt notice it until i got home.I was pissed.On sunday my wife and i drove to the dealership to check the others and every one had the same thing except for one. There were probably 13 on the lot. I took mine back on monday addressed the issue with the dealer and ended up trading for the one that had flawless paint. The dealer was going to check into it and find out the cause. It wasn't so much on the sides at all ,it was on the hood, top and the fenders. The sales person said it looked like some sort of fallout possibly from sitting on the lot at the factory? Who knows? I did try rubbing a spot out myself and it did come off with some hard work but i figured that was their problem and didn't want to get into a warranty situation with them.Oh, I went to a different lot and found the same thing on theirs. I don't understand why one ( the one i have now )out of all of them was flawless.

The plant is located outside of the city, away from everything except pine trees. Sounds like maybe the train dust?

don't they cover the vehicles hood and roof with something when shipped ?I see different brand cars and trucks on car carriers with some type of white covering on the hoods, roof and trucks to prevent this problem ?

Doubt it. H3 builder can answer that. However, when I was in Spring Hill we did some testing on shipping with the protective covering and found out the end warranty cost was the same. The dealer during PDI should check for rail dust, they know which of their vehicles come by rail. If rail dust is apparent, they are two remove it using one of two different approved methods. One, clay bar the horizontal surfaces, or two, use Oxalic acid. Oxalic acid will not affect the paint, but will dissolve metal particles.
The dealer gets paid for either of these rail dust removal methods.
I just confirmed mine has rail dust. For the first time I washed it today, and there were some "rusty" looking spots, and my clay bar removed them quite easily.
Should I have taken it back to the dealer? Yes, but it is a heck of a lot easier for me to remove these small particles.

Yea I have a Blk H3 and the paint around sunroof has about 7 little sand like debris in it and on the fender looks like a bad spot in the clear but i an sure after off roading i will only worry about the big scratchs I better stay on the open trails....lol
