oh deer!

On my way into work tonight, I had my first deer encounter in the H3. We have so many roaming around this time of year here in Ohio. I was on a back road doing about 45 mph when out she came from my left side. It was a pretty large doe and she just decided to cross as I approached. She kind of jumped out of the ditch and started trottting across the road. She made it about half way across the road and quickly looked at the H3 and had this scared look on her face (you should have seen the look on my face), as maybe she noticed it was a Hummer and retreated back into the ditch twice as fast as she came out of it. I did a quick maneuver to the right, just got off the pavement a bit and then swung it back on the road. It happened so fast I never had time to think about how the H3 would react. Needless to say, I was impressed. The control remained at 100%, there was no sliding or leaning or anything. It just reacted. I know my last truck, Avalanche, would give and lean and you felt as though there was no real control when you had to weave around things or quickly react to miss an animal crossing the road. So feel confident that your H3 will perform well in times when you have to react quickly. Once it was all over,all I could think about was what I would have titled my post if I would have got nailed. Like maybe OWNED BY A DOE or something.

Thanks for that story. An Avalanche might have been my second pick to the Hummer. It's the only other (great looking) vehicle I see without the generic curvy design. But that was the previous version with all the plastic, not the 2006 version. Glad I got the H3.

Cool story, glad it worked out for both parties!

I like the avalanche but I would have to remove that fugly plastic thing that is behind the rear door that slants down to the bed. that really ruins the look of the truck for me.

Glad there was no spat involved. Where I live I'm dodging deer, racoons, squirrels, wild turkeys almost daily. Glad the H3 handles well and has decent brakes.

Lot's of critters and some areas to do a little offroading on private roads here.

Deer usually make small dents, just watch our for Elk and their bretheren the slow moving elk (Cows). I came over a hill at night once and a herd of slow moving elk were in the road, I was doing 70 mph and somehow made it through there with only a broken drivers side mirror. Hit the cow in the head. I later changed my shorts when I got home.

I hope that next time one of the elk’s comes over the hood, smashes through the window, cuts you into pieces and crushes your chest so you slowly die of asphyxiation in as much pain as possible.

One thing I liked about the Hummer when I bought it was the square front end and high windshield height. It would be difficult to hit a deer and have it go up and over the hood unless it was a really big deer or moose. I live in deer country, and this year they are everywhere and I've seen a few smashed in windshields from deer.
