What is the point of the 3m double sided tape anyways? Once it gets wet won't it ruin it's sticking effects anyways? Does it really help hold it on that much?

yes.... at least if it comes loose you don't have metal to metal rubbage

it works pretty well if the trucks paint is preped/cleaned. plus it gives the guard a nice anti-vibration strip.

True I guess thats a great thing. I really didn't even think about that. All I thought was after a few auto car washes nothing was going to be left of it.

I hand washed the whole truck first. It's holding pretty good right now. I just don't see that happening after a few laser washes. Maybe I'll be surprised though.

The new taillight guards are designed with screws to hold them on rather than tape. However, drilling is now required.

The tape actually holds the outer edges of the tail light guards to the truck. I believe they were designed that way so that if a branch got stuck between the tail light and the guard, and you continued forward, rather than have the guard pulled out by the screws, it would pop the tape and open like a book if you will. The bolted brackets on the inner edge would act like a hinge. At that point you would only have to replace those 2 bent brackets and the tape. There would be no damage to your truck from screws being pulled from the sheet metal. I have an 03 that I bought in 03 and the tape is still holding through many washings and rain storms.

The tape holds on better on the SUV's than the SUT's for some reason. The guards are different by the way. My first truck was an '03 SUV with the taped guards. They never came off once. My '05 SUT, also with the tape, came off several times while I had it. I picked up some new ones with the screws for my latest '05 SUV, but I haven't yet decided whether to use them. I still thinking about the drilling...

When the tape came off did you just let it go? I mean the screws should be holding it on tight enough not to move much. Or did you take it off everytime and retape it?

No. I didn't want any damage (it did move around enough to bang around while I was driving...), so I took them off and applied new tape. It wasn't really a big deal -- just another hassle to deal with.

What kind of tape did you use? I used the 3m double sided tape for mounting. It suppose to hold better than any other kind they have. Only problem is it's white so I had to make sure none was over the sides.

I used the same 3M double sided tape. It was white, so I just trimmed it carefully along the edge. You couldn't really notice the color difference unless you were really close up. Of course, my guards were chrome. It might have been more noticeable on black ones.

Yup I have black ones. Did it hold up pretty well the second time around? I have a SUV so I'm hoping mine will.

I only had problems with the SUT. My SUV was fine from the get-go. Like I said, I think the design of the SUT had to do with the problem.

Good hopefully I'll be problem free than. If Not maybe I'll buy the one's you drill. Although a hole would really kill me.

Mine is factory but the older tape type. Anyone have a trick to getting it off without having to actually rip it off? It is on tight!

Is it black? If so good luck. I helped a friend with his. We used a hair dryer to heat it up, than alcohol to get the rest off.

3m white=interior use
3m gray=exterior use
If you can get activator wipe(made by 3m), use it. If not, use alcohol.

All fixed. The white tape just fell right off. No problems at all but the egg on my face.
