Over 36,000 miles on the truck, time to try and figure it out myself.

Thanks walc, This mirror was replaced on 3/05 with 28,900 miles on the clock due to the "vibrating mirror" problem (does it again) then it goes and does this, oh well, such is life.
I added two more pictures showing the before and after of the circuit board.

How ugly was the door panel removal process? Did it all go back together again rattle free? Seems every time I do this on a car I snap at least 2 of those christmas tree connectors and have a rattle or squeak afterwards that wasn't there before.
Both my mirrors nolonger fold and I'd love to be able to fix them myself like this.
That's pretty cool work, there slick.

PhilD and KenP, thanks, I really should have taken the time to see if the vibrating problem could have been fixed while I had it out but was tired of screwing with it and was just glad the damn thing worked again :-)
Maybe I need to get a donor mirror from the salvage yard or E-bay and play around with it to see if it is fixable.
JohnnyRPM, I added more pictures to show how I took the door panel apart. It went back together without any problems and is just as quite as before.
If I might make a couple suggestions to anyone thinking of doing this, check fuses first, there should be a DDM and a PDM fuse, (one for each side) but if the fuse is blown I'd think none of the mirror functions will work. Also, when you push the button to fold in the mirrors, listen for the motors to see if they are running. In my case I could hear the passenger side motor run as the mirror did fold in but there was no sound coming from the drivers side mirror.
Hope this helps some out there fix theirs.
Side note, If I got the chance I'd consider going with the newer style mirrors, kinda like the looks of them.

Easy Ed.....you are the best!!!! Great step by step on the whole thing! My motors run but just can't move the mirrors so this is just the thing I was hoping could be done.
I had a badass '85 Fiero GT performed a similar fix for the hideaway headlight motors. There was one guy who even made a whole business out of reconditioning the headlight motors from Fieros and Firebirds for non do-it-yourselfers.

Thanks for the How To's and congrats on solving your problem.
I have experienced both of my mirrors not closing during the winter during temps at freezing and below. My garage is not insulated so it occurs overnight. I am only guessing, but based on what you found inside yours, water accumulated in mine has frozen over inside. They will gradually begin to function during the day as the temps rise and "thaw"out whatever was solidified. Again, I've noticed these anomolies have only occurred during times of freezing temps. And after seeing what water eventually did to your circuit board I can only surmise that I am sitting on a more potential of a problem.

JohnnyRPM, Did you try folding the mirrors in manually and then use the button to see if they "unfold" ? Just a thought.
I found that the mirrors will fold manually from the window and then towards the front of the truck, 180 degrees. You can feel the "click" when it reaches the unfolded and folded positions.
Can we get a Hummer Tech to chime in here to tell us what the "official" cause is for the mirrors giving up the ghost when it comes to the folding issue ?

Great write-up Ed. Just fixed my driver's side mirror today. Had the same problem with the moisture and corrosion build up. I used WD40 to clean it up...didn't quite get it as clean as you, but it works perfectly now. I also picked up a couple of new mirrors from ebay for dirt cheap....guess I'll save them in case I have trail damage... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Not too long...maybe a couple of hours. I didn't pull the switch panel before pulling the whole panel off....I did forget to hook the courtesy light back up and slammed the door on it when i was rushing to finish. Quick trip to Schucks for a new bulb. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. All in all, easy fix... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Since this is such a common problem on the early models, I wonder if HUMMER will cover the mirrors under warranty now?

Below was the response I got from the mfg of the mirror and had in the vibration repair post. My understanding is that there is an upgraded version of the motor unit and that was why I wrote them to begin with to see if they were interchangable.
I have noticed that they changed their site to no longer show the actuators but just a blurb at the last sentence here http://automotive.eaton.com/product/
Mr. Sheridan,
I apologize for my delayed response. I was on vacation last week. Unfortunately, due to warranty/performance issues. The mirror maker, in this case Delbar, does not offer the stand alone powerfold actuator for sale as a service part. They only sell complete mirror assemblies. As the component manufacturer, we are not able to sell this direct to service due to Delbar's position as the Tier 1. Your only option is to replace the whole mirror, should it happen again.
Just FYI - the logo is IKU. Eaton acquired this company a few years back.
I'm sorry I didn't have better news.

I spoke with my local dealership, and they said more likely GM will not cover the mirrors when out of warranty even though there is a known problem... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I had the same problem with both my mirrors, they both worked well for a while but then my passenger side no longer folded in, and in about a month later my driver side was no longer folding in. I took the truck to Shaw GMC, look at it and replaced both mirrors(under warranty). Okay, I was happy, everything worked again...for a month and a half!! then they both crapped out again! Back to GM I went and this time they replased them with the new H2 mirrors, (Black housing with chrome H2 stamped on the front). Had these on now for just over 2 months and they work great. If you don't have warranty these mirrors will run you anywhere between $900.00 to $1,100.00/ea! YIKES!
Mine are being replaced under warranty and I didn't even have to beg them. Passenger side was fine, drivers side was alittle loose and rattled/shaked. Wish they would hurry up and get them in though, I have been waiting for 3 weeks now for the new mirrors!
Mine are being replaced under warranty and I didn't even have to beg them. Mine were replaced by a dealer and I didn't even think they were hosed. They seemed to work just fine when I took it in. I'm sort of suspicious that that dealer is so fast at replacing them that they'll do it just for the excess warranty revenue. If that's the case, it's a shame.

Well the passenger side one is fine, but the drivers side has about a 1/4" of slop and it rattles, shakes, vibrates, etc. It also closes slower, so I am assuming it will die altogether soon. So that was why I put it on my laundry list of things to have fixed.

Correct, we are fast at changing them. I have had several customers come in for inspections and found their mirrors do not fold in. Phoned the customers and they had no idea as they never use that feature. So I have changed them out to the new updated mirrors if they wanted me to, so I guess thats my bad for helping my customers identify A known problem that they may have not found out about until after warranty? Never seen the new mirrors fail they work great, zero water intrusion. I will change them out in less than 1/2 hr both sides but warranty time is 0.9 per side, I charge customer time off warranty at 0.6hr per side I think that is pretty fair seeing the losses I do take on many jobs. Flat rate mechanics beleive it or not work for free on vehicles more than one would expect. The best tech you could find is the one who takes hourly hits once in A while, thats the guy(or girl) who would rather take his time and lose A little but have A happy customer. Just my opinion.FYI I take time loss weekly in order to try to talk with customers about their concerns, every time your dealer mechanic takes the time to talk to you about your truck he is working for free but I personnally feel it's well worth it just gettin to know y'all.

No. That's not bad.
But, mine worked fine when I took it in. I knew the feature, used it, and it functioned correctly. They never asked. They just did the work. I was told after the fact...the service writer insisted they weren't working. Also, they were replaced by the old mirrors (i.e. the non-2006 chromed ones). So unless there was an improvement to the mirrors pre-2006, I had a worthless repair. Why???? Hence my speculation about some shops getting easy money.

Humtech, I really like your attitude toward your clients. We're lucky that our guys have the same attitude. I pop in every now-and-then just to say "Hi" and let them know they'll be seeing the truck soon.;) I also invite the Sales Mgr, salesman, and my writer to play cards every now and then. We have a great relationship.

My dealer has a mobile service. They came to my office parking lot and replaced both mirrors in about 45 minutes. They also replaced my power steering pump in the lot. Ramp Hummer has treated me well!:)

Edit: Old site link to fix mirror
http://elcova.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/6706011751/m/7611046851
Will try to duplicate here for the day the old site is taken down.
Panel Removal.....
001a Remove Phillips head screw and cover.
002a Remove two bolts behind cover that was just removed.
003a Remove button panel. There are four "hooked shaped" areas on the panel, two on each side that need to be "unhooked" from the door panel. I used a putty knife and a rag to protect door panel. The other panel above this one stays in place.
004a Panel out, time to remove connectors, take your time and you'll figure out how to remove them.
005a Remove door panel, I started near the bottom corners and worked my way up, didn't break a one :-) You have to disconnect the door panel light connector wire and then set the panel off to the side.
006a What it looks like with panel off. You will want to start pulling the upper right side insulation loose to get to the mirror bolts, I left the window up.
007a Pulling back the insulation and getting to see the bolts.
008a Fun part, getting nuts loose without dropping them, not really that hard to do.
009a Remove mirror and start taking it apart like I did in the first picture of this post. I will not promise that all non folding mirrors will be because of the problem that I had with mine.
Mirror fix....
001 Time to see if I can screw up something up.
002 Removing motor housing and other parts that fold the mirror.
003 Ah, I really don't think that is suppose to be in there.
004 Not looking to good here.
005 Motor would not turn so I figured I'd try some Liquid Wrench, what did I have to lose at this point.
006 Those are magnets on either side, they are for the circuit board sensor to "count" revs, I guess.
007 Will it work. Damn, it does
008 Drain hole, "What is it going to hurt" was what I was thinking at the time I did it.
009 IT WORKS :-)
010 Notice all the rust and water in the bottom.
011 Cleaned the mess out hoping that there wasn't any permanent damage to the board.

Well, it finally happen tonight as I was backing into the garage. Driver side mirror would fold, its been a bit slow for awhile but still worked just fine. I had to hand crank it in and out. (won't clear the side with them out)
So, after reading and reading I guess I need to first see if I can fix them, or just replace......DAMN!

My mirrors have never folded. What's the button people talk about here?
I have extended warranty and would love mine to do this.
Would love the 07 mirrors even more. :)

Be sure the one is in the center position that is above the one squared out in the pic. The squared out one is the adjustment for folding the mirrors. Good Luck, Easy Ed

Thanks! My driver side mover folds in, the passenger does not.
I'll have to ask about this next time I'm at the dealer.

Easy Ed,
Awesome instructions...spot on. :perfect10s: Mine were not working. I bought a set from DEWAXMAN and installed them per your instructions. Thank you for posting that.
Now I'll take my old ones apart and see if I can fix them as a spare.

I just bought a 2003 H2 with 65k miles on it and my motors were almost as rusty as yours.
Soaked the motors in WD40 for a day, cleaned everything up per the instructions, all is well now.
Took about 4 hours (not counting soak time)
Thanks!!

I'm in the process of fixing mine right now. Easy Ed's pictorial made the process very easy and without experiencing the usual feeling of, "what the heck am I going to break while trying to fix something else?" Thank you Easy Ed! :)
I squirted a bunch of Liquid Wrench in mine and the motor still will not turn after an hour or so. But it is good to know others have soaked their motors a long time without damaging the insulated windings.
To be continued . . . wish me luck.

Thanks, Ed. I would not have attempted this project without your instructions.
After 8 hours of squirting Liquid Wrench and then switching to WD-40 I finally got the motor to break free. I tested it with a 9-volt battery and it worked like a charm. :)
The only question I have is regarding the two fly-speck magnets. I removed them for safe keeping while working on the motor. Did you pay attention to the magnetic polarity when you put them back into their little holes? (I did.) I hope the magnets are strong enough on their own to keep them from flying out of the holes when the motor spins up. If they fly out, I will never find them again if they go into the gear box.

Gonna finally give this a go this spring. I made a nifty little 'pocket edition' so I could have a printed copy to work from...thought others might find it useful too.
Enjoy...
Since I can't upload a PDF that's over 19.5K (WTF); I've posted the PDF on my FTP site:

F-THAT! I just replaced all four handle buckets and removed the mirrors for the 'old mirror repair'. TRUST ME...on the front doors, just take out the glass. Remove the two 10mm bolts at the bottom of the glass (holes in the door line up for these), remove the bottom rubber trim from the window sill, lower the glass about half way, and the glass rotates (clockwise for the driver's side, counter clockwise for the passenger side) and lifts right out.
Once out the buckets and mirrors are an ABSOLUTE PIECE OF CAKE. There's holes in the doors that line up with every single bolt/nut you need to remove. The only obstacle that I encountered was on one of the bucket nuts...you need to remove the upper bolt for the window track/guide and push it a bit to towards the front of the truck to reach to nut with a ratchet.
Screw making custom 10mm wrenches and trying to squeeze man-hands up inside the door...I could understand if the glass removal was a real pain in the a55, but it's not. My 2 cents....
