I plugged a chassis number of a 2003 H2 in to the Parts Imager and it came up with "Manufacturer AM General" then i did the same with a 2004 chassis number of a H2 and it came up with "Manufacture General Motors"?

Are these 2 the same or what????? Did GM list as AM General until 2004???

Many Thanks
Ashley

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think you are right. I think the first year the H2 was out, it was still considered AM General. It wasn't until 2004, it became GM.

AM General builds the H2, whereas GM designed and markets it. GM bought the HUMMER brand name back in 1999, but I don't think anything changed about the relationship im 2004.

isn't the H2 still built in the AMG plant(s)?

H-2's from day 1 have been built by the general in their new hummer plant built beside the AM general plant. AM general never had anything to do with production of the H-2, in fact gm actually stepped in and helped in the design of the new h-1 interior. The only thing the 2 share is the hummer name, 2 different trucks built by 2 different companies.

From the AM General website:

HUMMER® H1 & H2
Due in part to the military HMMWV renown in Desert Storm, AM General introduced a civilian version of the vehicle called the HUMMER in 1992. Known as “the world’s most serious 4x4,” the revolutionary vehicle has found favor with commercial users who appreciate the value of HUMMER’s long life and amazing performance, and individuals who seek the ultimate in toughness and mobility. In 1999, General Motors acquired the HUMMER brand worldwide and rebadged the current vehicle H1. In 2002, AM General began assembling the HUMMER H2 for GM in its new factory in Mishawaka, Ind. This vehicle was designed by and is marketed by General Motors.

More from the AM General website:

HUMMER® H1 & H2
Producing a civilian version of the battle-tested military Humvee® was a natural progression for AM General. In 1992, when the HUMMER was introduced as a civilian truck, it had become apparent that the public understood its unique off-road capabilities.

Today the HUMMER H1® is still a vehicle without peer. It takes all the tough characteristics of the military High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and refines them slightly for civilian use.

For nearly a decade, the HUMMER caught the country’s eye and it became a highly sought after, one-of a kind vehicle. It’s an icon of strength, durability and individualism.

In late 1999, AM General and General Motors Corporation finalized an agreement to jointly pursue product, marketing and distribution opportunities for HUMMER. Under the final agreement, GM acquired the exclusive ownership of the HUMMER brand name worldwide and the current HUMMER was renamed the HUMMER H1.

In 2002, AM General opened its new HUMMER H2® Assembly Plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, next to the plant that produces the military Humvee and the HUMMER H1. There it assembles the exciting new SUV and SUT variants of the HUMMER H2, designed and brought to market by GM.

No one on the GM payroll helps build the H2. You have it backwards. GM has nothing to do with building each H2.

Regarding the H2;

AM General LLC is simply one of thousands of GM suppliers. In the case of the H2, GM's "supplier contract" called for their SUV & SUT H2's to be "assembled" by a company named AM General LLC until the year 2009 at a rate up to 40,000 units per year.

Look at the H2 this way: GM designed it; certifies it; markets it through GM’s dealer network; warrants it; owns all the tooling; buys every single part to build it through their vast supplier network and then has them all drop-shipped to another of their suppliers (AM General) to further assemble GM's parts.

GM had argued with the DOT, NHTSA & EPA from day 1 that the H2 was a GM vehicle that was simply "assembled" by one of their suppliers (AM General) from 100% GM parts. Apparently it took GM over a year to cut through all the red tape and finally convince DOT & NHTA & EPA that the H2 is in fact a GM vehicle.

QUOTE]That would explain the manufacturers name change for the 04's. Although it is hardly made of 100% GM parts, I doubt many vehicles are assembled with 100% parts from the manufacturer.[/QUOTE]

Please be aware the H2 is one of those few vehicles that are.

ALL parts in & on the H2 are 100% GM purchased parts! NONE ...as in ZERO... H2 parts come from AM General. The H2 is 100% GM content and of course that does not necessarily make it good ...or make it bad ...it just makes it the way it is!

At least "my inference" was and still is that 100% of the H2's content is GM purchased/procured material...pure & simple. GM not only outsourced many component parts, but the "assembly" of their H2 as well...pure and simple.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> The biased slant is quite clear. Well let's not kid ourselves about the H1 either. It IS a "hotch potch collection" as you put it, of commercially available components with some uniquely AMG parts thrown in! So where’s the "beef?" ...or as you say; "biased slant?"

I have no illusions about the short comings of the H2, likewise for the H1. I like both vehicles, but for different reasons.

To infer that the H2 is built by GM is factually incorrect. It is built by AMG. I don't suppose for one minute this makes the slightest bit of difference, but it is the case. Apoligies, yes the h-2 is assembled by AMG, but designed, marketed, and sold by GM. Simply put gm farmed out assembly as part of A deal to accuire the HUMMER brand name. H-1 was designed, marketed and assembled by AMG making the H-1 the only hummer exclusivly AMG built. By no means do I think the H-2 is not A real Hummer, they both have their place in the off road world, either one could out perform the other in given terrain. Furthermore I don't own any type of hummer just work on all 3 on A daily basis. Sorry for any confusion. Sometimes A guy can get A little bitter when working on these trucks day in and day out with what both AMG and GM pay A tech doing warranty work.
