Tank reserve question

I have only had my H3 for about 6 weeks now and I am getting about 300 miles on a tank of gas. As you know, the H3 has a 23 gallon tank and the last 3 times I have filled up is when my "low fuel" indicator comes on (say within 5-10 miles or so).

Each of the last 3 times, I have only been able to put roughly 19.5 gallons in. Thus, is the "reserve" in the tank after the low fuel indicator comes on about 3.5 gallons or so?? If so, I'll drive a little further :D

I am guessing it is around 3 gallons but don't know for sure. I try not to wait until the warning comes on just from experience. The low fuel light on my Mountaineer was very unreliable and I actual ran out of gas going down a hill on the highway one time within 1/4 mile of it coming on. Luckily I was able to cost to an exit that was going up hill, get it started again and get to a station about a block down the road :mad:

You are correct, When the light comes on you have about 3 gal left. My light came on at 295 miles and I drove it to 338 miles and filled up 22.6gals, just barely made it...another 5 miles and she would have been dry :eek: .

Okay..here's my question. Does the light come on before the gauge hits the red line? I have yet to see my low fuel light come on, but yet the gauge is practically sitting below "E".:confused:

Maybe mine is broke...like THAT would surprise me.:o :( :mad:

I also never had the light go on and it sits below E.:confused:
I have never put in more than 19.6 gallons so I assume it goes on at 20 gallons.

I am experiencing the same thing with my H3. Takes about 20 gallons to fill after the low fuel indicator comes on.

BASTID!!!! Did you also remove some teeth from my Ring and Pinion?? How about the bolts from my crossmember? AND I bet it was YOU that cracked my roof rail! :mad: ;)

So, we are all in agreement that if you fill up when the low fuel indicator comes on, you are putting 19.5 gallons or so in. Thus, in my around town driving with a little jaunt on the interstate every day, my 300 miles on 19.5 gallons is 15.4 MPG. Sweet :p

Previous vehicle was a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which driving the same distance, usually hit between 13.9-14.2 MPG (based on the roof computer calcs).

Instructions is in the owners manual.Its easy to change I beleve you have a few options.:cool:

Put the key in, turn it to the "ON" position without stopping the car. Simultaneously press the lock and unlock buttons on your key fob. You'll see a message on your driver information center (odometer area) that says RKE 1. You can press the reset button to switch between the different RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) modes. I think Lock Honk is mode 2 or 3.

Is the H3 fuel pump inside the tank like other GM vehicles? If so, it's using the fuel to keep cool. So if you drive past /E a lot, the pump could fail early.

It is in the tank, and yes, I would agree, keep it a quarter full to help cool the pump. (Someday, I'll learn to do that myself:D ) However, the fuel running through also cools down the pump. The real problem is if it is bone dry and the pump is running.

While I have never experienced the problem, a lot of veteran mechanics will tell you to never run the tank that low. Not only are the observations correct about running a pump dry (this applies to many, many pumps for various liquids) it also causes any tank sediment to be sucked up. This could cause fuel filter and injector clog, etc.
