View Full Version : My H-3 HOPS

Well went to my Moms today and she told me her H-3 squeaks when she turns sharp to the left or right.
So
I took it for a drive and did some SHARP slow left and right turns
And
DAMN, the thing HOPS. I mean on full left and right turns it bounces like the front and back wheels are out of sync.
So
Thinking its because of the FULL turn of the wheel, I tried it with mine and it was fine and dandy, no hop...
Well
What gives? Does anyone else have this problem? Very very strange...
A little feedback here. Hey 5, any ideas?
I guess a trip to the dealer is needed

make sure t-case setting is correct..but i assume you already did that...so..what surfaces were you on? same? that could also make it feel jumpy..

I'm just curious, did he ever post pics of his H3's?......maybe I missed it.

I had my old Chevy Blazer do something like that. The rear would hop doing sharp turns. I was caused by a bad rear ujoint.

I have noticed at times, mine will feel like it is hopping. However, even if the hopping is on smooth surfaces, from my memory the surfaces are different. I feel it at times when backing into or pulling into and out of my driveway, from a concrete surface. Whereas. I don't notice the hopping when in a parking lot with asphalt. These are the only times I have noticed it, but also basically the only times I lock the steering to one side.
I have never checked but believe that due to the H3 always in a 4x4 mode, even with only 40 percent to the front, some hopping on some surfaces may be normal.

Thanks... Took both H-3's to the EXACT same spot on asphalt in a remote location in the country, newly paved and was under 10 mph with both vehicles, locked the steering full left and full right in all the same places, the GRAY BABY definitly HOPS and the YELLOW DUCKY does not...
So I'll plan a dealer trip

One more question.
Do both have the same tires? Are pressures set correctly? Stickiness between the different tires and lower tires are stickier might be a problem. Just trying to save a trip to the dealer if not required.

Same tires, AH... but didn't check the pressure.
Oh well another trip to MOMS, shes a lot closer then the dealer,
GOOD IDEA!
Thanks...

Mine does the same thing. From a dead stop, with the wheel cranked either direction, when touching the gas, it hops...
Even screeches the tires a bit on occasion...

I've had the hop happen to me twice on two different days. I tried to duplicate it on purpose, and it didn't do it. At both times I was making a tight u-turn in the middle of the street. I know if I go to the dealer it won't happen, so I'll hold off. I think this has happened to me in our Jeep Grand Cherokee on a very tight turn, too, in the past.

Why in one of my H-3's and not the other...

I have it happen all the time in parking lots. Even freshly paved ones. When one tire hits the line, that tire slides a bit causing a hopping feeling.

Thanks. There were no smooth paint lines, no small rocks, no nothing other then clean paved asphalt. Ran both H-3's in the same area (as close as possible), same speed, etc...
I am gona check the tire pressure in the Gray H-3. I had just adjusted the pressure in the Yellow Duck to 40psi. Both H-3's had cold tires altho the Gray one may have been slightly warm.
I will check the gas tanks to see if both have around similar gas weights altho I don't see how that would effect it.
I will advise and still seek any additional thoughts and comments.
Thanks everyone

Try going off road and cycle the 4x4 locked on and off, and then do the 4x4 low. Perhaps something go stuck....

I noticed some of this and the PCM sees this too. When I'm going up a smooth winding hill (i.e., no washboard) at low-med throttle, I see knock retard (about 6 degrees) during each bend. During heavy throttle (not WOT) I don't see any knock retard on the same hill. I just assumed it low throttle, the three is a three way power struggle between the front wheels, rear wheels, and the engine and the torque transfer fed back as pulses into the engine creating some noise that was picked up by the knock sensor. During heavy throttle the engine won the power battle and front and rear wheels fought it out.

.............for a second there I thought Hummer may have came out with a new beer. I wonder if H1 HOPS would be "hoppier" than H3 HOPS.:jump:

Maybe the center diff in the t-case is not un-locking for hwy use?
Are you turning the wheels all the way?
Maybe the inside rear tire is lifting up

Damn! I was also excited that Hummer might be introducing a new hops for a beer line
Seriously though, I also notice a bit of tire bite in certain circumstances. It scared me at first but I am now used to it. I particularly notice it on newer parking lots, especially if it is damp and I have just shined the meat (errr... ok, I better say tires instead) :p I also notice this when leaving a level surface and entering a steep, downhill grade at an angle. If the maneuver is to the right, the driver's side front wheel will bite. I have never had full time 4x4 with Stablitrac so I reckon that the system is reacting to a perceived loss in traction. The Explorer Sport (what I traded for the H3), when locked in full 4x4, would also hop, per se.
I have chaulked it up to the new tech experience and have continued on my way :dancingbanana:

I took it in Monday afternoon after picking up the DUCK for oil and tires. They loaned me a a chevy Suberban (dam that thing was as long as a aircraft carrier and got 6 gal to the mile)
anyway returned with the gray one and they still have it. They are loaning me a CTS (kinda low to the ground)
Awaiting a phone call today or tomorrow (i hope) don't like the caddy - asked for a ROLLS or CORVETTE but they were out at that time...
WILL ADVISE

Williamson Cadillac? Why don't you request an Escalade? Or, even an SRX (:p)? It's hard to get back into a sedan after driving an SUV. Let us know what you hear on the hopping when you find out. Curious.

WELL ...
Got a call a few minutes ago,
" MICHAEL, we tried but could not duplicate the problem" " we are detailing your H-3 and it should be ready around 10am tomorrow" "if it happens again bring it in right away, no appointment" "the new jack is installed" "the broken plastic behind the front bumper right side is not warrenty, they want $450 to replace it, I (service Mike) told them no, RIGHT?"
So guys and girls, thats the story... Got to drive a CADDY for 2 days
AND
we will see if it happens again

Thanks for the update. I had posted that I've had that 'hop' twice .. haven't had it since. I think it was just the angle and how tight it was to make that happen. Hopefully you won't feel it again.
Bummer on the $450.00 for the plastic piece! Is it noticeable?
(BTW, when you're getting out of that low caddy, do you feel like you're having to drop to your knees to be able to stand back up again???:giggling: )

NO, its directly behind the bumper. You can't see it unless your up in the wheel well. Don't know what it does but whatever it is it ain't worth $450
