I kinda thought Hunner mighta been getting the run around a month or so back when he was looking for a spare set and the dealer told him the only ones showing in inventory nationwide were somewhere in Texas.. He drove there and bought 'em...

I got three outers and 2 inners before the pond dryed up! My dealer somehow ordered two outers instead of a set. One came from Alaska and one nut from Ms and two from timbucktoo Im hangin on to them. I'm thinkin of puttin them in a glass case, you know like a fire extinguisher, in case of emergency, break glass! I ordered some from GM parts direct two months ago and they said it was a nationwide backorder. Need to fire some inventory guy that makes the most money and wears a tie that cuts off oxygen to the brain up in the big house at GM.
The one I bought at Sewell they charged me $110 American dollars. Do people in Dallas put up with that daily? I bought one for 45 online and from my dealer 65. Old college addage in marketing, what the traffic will bear.............I had the feeling it was gonna happen. I started out wanting an extra to carry along way out in Sedona, Moab, Long Ranch and Colorado. Then when I found out how scarce they were I decided I needed two. Now I got two and 1/2! Hope I never need them but after driving 1400+ miles I thought maybe it would be nice to have one.
I needed a spare for R&D
Just another H3 story..............

That is crazy what if your are stuck in BFE waiting for parts?
I have to figure out what thread size I have first but I gues I'll put my order in and wait.
I wonder if there are any off brands (none GM OEM) that would do.

Damn man, spoke with a friend at the dealership and he said GM will send out a nationwide bulletin on the 25th on when, where, and who will get thier shipments first.
This sucks!! I need one NOW!!! Anyone who is willing to sell it to me let me know!

I did a little bit of a mod on my tie rod.... So actually I have two tie rods... One new and one welded back together... Hopefully, if I get another complete tie rod.. I would like to put the welded one in a vice and see how much trouble it would be to break the weld.... But in a pinch it would get me or another friendly H3 off the trail....

What was going on with your H3 that had them replace the steering rack????
There was a tear in the boot and the pump was leaking. We thought it was the A/C compressor, but it tested fine.
No story though, I could make one up, but it started leaking in Eureka Nevada, and we had it checked in Ely. The guys at a local oil change place thought it was the A/C compressor, so they pulled the plug on it and sent me down the road to Moab.
Poor Sewie had oil all over the front of his truck :giggling:
Anyway, it was making a nasty groaning noise in the mornings when it was really cold out, 32 or below since January, but because they could not reproduce the noise, or find a leak in the system, (they put dye in it back in Jan and tested the system) they said it was fine. Well, it wasn't.
So the new racks come with new tie rods I guess. All assembled. :)
I noticed no symptoms other than the noise.

Hey ChasH3 you did okay on the trails with that welded tierod? Here's a pic of mine, what do you think this is good enough for the trails? I placed a clamp over the inner and outer tierod to keep it from spinning, because mine broke at the threads my friend who welded it had no choice but to weld over the threads, we couldn't put the nut back on.
I haven't taken my rig over 45mph yet only because I wouldn't want it to snap on the freeway, but everyone is telling me that the welded side is actually stronger than the stock one. I'm missing out on a big run Saturday because of my freakin' paranoia of it snapping it, I dunno man, it's either paranoia or just the fact that freakin' nobody has any in stock - I hope HummBebe does well on Sunday and sends me her spare (hint, hint!)

I only ended up running the one trail.. There were some places along the trail that if I would of broke the tie rod again, getting pulled out would of caused some body damage... The bolt that is attached to the outside part of the tie rod, was a bolt I found in town at the local hardware store... Cut the head off the bolt and then welded it to the other half... I drove home on the freeway and never went over 55 mph.... I would use the welded one in an emergency, but I wouldn't continue wheeling with it attached...

I don't think I see any grease zerts. How long will Hime joints last without grease? I know Skyjacker struts and track bars on Jeeps wear out quickly on the street. I will look at that somemore and see if I can find how to contact them with measurements just to run the scenario. I looked at some full size pickups and they are longer and not impressively bigger if at all.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The connected joints of the prior art comprise a plurality of articulated joints henceforth individually referred to as a ball joint. Dimensionally, the Hime Joint is similar in size to a conventional ball joint or tie rod end found in selected vehicle suspension systems. While it does offer the rotational capability of the ball joint, it lacks the connecting insert to allow it to act as a ball joint or tie rod end. The newly invented tapered, or alternatively, straight insert provides that added capability.
When the conventional upper and lower ball joints or tie rod ends are replaced with the Hime Joint and the newly invented tapered or straight insert is installed, new and unexpected results occur. The Hime Joint, when fitted with the newly invented tapered or straight insert provides proportionally greater vertical and or horizontal travel. This extra travel results in a dramatically improved suspension system; one that is up to eighty percent stronger and weighs less than the conventional ball joint system. Additionally the unsprung weight of the suspension system is reduced and handling is vastly improved. Friction is also greatly reduced compared to the conventional style ball joint.

I googled Hime joint
All my present and past fellow race car mechanics all said today that Himes would wear out fast. I do recall on Formula Fords and Formula Bs that was something checked and replaced often. Neat while they work though. Surely aftermarket manufactures will catch up as time goes on. Im trying to find some alternative way to beef them up. I can't believe I have not hit one on something yet. Are the ones that have broken been hit or is it spinning tires and then getting traction breaking them??

Well if it had a groove around the edge inside to capture some grease it would. The ones I looked at today if you did that it would just ooze out where the zerk was. Nothing to contain it. Have you had success doing that in an offroad environment??

Are the later model OEM tie rods larger diameter and stronger?
Have more people broken the earlier tie rods?
Maybe we can upgrade to the later tie rods?
Could a simple clamp-on reinforcment sleeve be fabricated?
That way you wouldn't need to un-bolt anything or re-align the front end
What does the Alpha sterring system look like? Would that system work on the older H3s

Are the later model OEM tie rods larger diameter and stronger? They are a different size, but I believe it is only the threaded stud where it attaches to the rack. So no, they are not stronger.
Have more people broken the earlier tie rods? Shouldn't matter.
Maybe we can upgrade to the later tie rods? They're basically the same.
What does the Alpha sterring system look like? Would that system work on the older H3s
I doubt they've beefed up the steering at all for the Alpha. We're stuck waiting for someone to come up with something aftermarket.

Are the later model OEM tie rods larger diameter and stronger? (Yes, 16mm versus 14mm. Different part numbers so chances are you cannot update to the larger if the vehicle has the smaller rods. If they allowed the 16mm to replace a 14mm, they would have purged the 14mm out of service parts. However, another reason to not purge the parts could be that you would have to replace both inner and outer with the 16mm. So, I don't know, and don't believe 2mm will make that much of a difference.)
Have more people broken the earlier tie rods? (Right now I would say YES, but only due to the fact the earlier tie rods are on all 2006, and 2007 models up to VIN 108975. After 108976, the vehicles had the larger 16mm installed. Since these are not normally replaced under warranty for breakage, I have no figures on how many have been replaced.)
Maybe we can upgrade to the later tie rods?

What does the Alpha sterring system look like? Would that system work on the older H3s Basically, the same. No specs yet, but since tire rods usually break due to stress from hits directly on them, or hits into the side of a wheel, or pressure from running on the side of the wheel, I would guess they will be the same size. I can say, the steering system looks identical, but I didn't measure anything.

Chances are the new ones, but only way to tell would be to measure the diameter of the links, or see if there is an eight digit part number...outer - 15907712.
Now, I don't mind that the newer rods are larger, I also don't mind that if you replace one (either inner or outer) you have to replace the other. However, I am having a hard time locating the new rods for my trip.
To say I'm a bit peed at some people right now, is an understatement.
I should know more on Tuesday, when I return to work and have a long conversation with a parts' engineer.

The reason I noticed my tie rods were different, is when I went to pick up my truck after the rack was replaced, my new tie rods were black, with a yellow stripe.
I have not looked to see if the new rods are black, been a little busy putting out other fires.
How I found out about the new rods being back serviced is I ran across the chassis service engineer manager yesterday and asked him to explain why there were over three hundred back-ordered inner tie rods and about 150 back-ordered outer tie rods for the H3. His response was GM is not having any 14mm outer made, and only a limited number of inners, and the dealers should be ordering the new 16mm rods. Well, the parts manual does not state this, or at least my electronic copy dated May 1, does not state that. He will be looking into it.
I then had a friend run a parts check and guess what, per the parts' system, there are no new ones in stock either (WTF). So, it appears everyone, including me have taken today as a vacation day, and Monday is a holiday, therefore on Tuesday, I will be on the phone first thing to the chasis dude and the dude in charge of these tie rods for service parts.
Now, I have to get back to my production of some front end brackets for a Hi-Lift jack.
