2006 H3 at 42,000 miles they replaced the cylinder head and the service guy is recommending a $170 transmission fluid change as well as front & rear
Differential fluid change and some other maintenance item which will bring the
Total cost to about $800. Can't I get these things done cheaper elsewhere? It sounded so outrageous I told the guy to hold off on the maintenance work.

just tell them you are hearing a clunking noise, that is either coming from the rear diff or tranny. they will have to replace the fluids to check ;) tell them you are worried about the metal shavings in the diff like the 06's were having.... i dunno bout if they can do the tranny like that tho. it worked for my diffs tho heh. im sure you can go to your local oil change shop to have the tranny flushed. as far as i know a tranny service is a flush and replacement of the filter on the inside of the pan. pretty simple.

Any good service shop can change out the diff fluid and transfer Case Fluid for less then $180.00..!!! Look up in your manual for the type fluid recommended By GM ..so when you go to the shop you'll know what's supposed to bee in there.

I would let a dealer drain and service your Auto Tranny. This way...If their's a screw up it's on them. Also..look in the manual for the milage service point on the tranny.

$170.00 sounds a tad high for the tranny... But at a dealer rate of $100.00 an hour it could be about that. I would shop around for other GM dealers for a price. Doesn't necessarily have to be a HUMMER dealer.

Your driving a Mod-ed Chevy Colorodo Truck...It should be able to be serviced at any GM dealership. That tranny is used in other GM rigs.

Some dealers have specials on service..Shop around

The reason the price is so high is because all the fluids they are changing are synthetic. If they are talking 170 for a trans flush with 16 new quarts of dex 6 then its a hell of a deal. If they're talking about a trans service, then its not that great of a price. The diff's are just drain and fill so go get some synthetic 70-90 and do it yourself. I would change the transfer case fluid as well. I changed mine at about 20k and I'm going to move the interval up to every 10k because the fluid was black.

I took advantage of AAMCO transmission flush and fill special on my Hummer in July for 99 dollars and they did a great job and showed me the old fluid and even said after 25,000 miles it was OK, but it was better now with new fluid. It had a few towing miles on it as well as two or three water excursions! They quoted me another 160 to do the two differentials and the transfer case.
