standard is 6 speakers i believe
go with the monsoon if you like music and don't plan on ever upgrading the sound system

The standard radio does not have a sub.

The standard system is AWSOME!
I guess if you want to lose your hearing you could go w/ the monsoon. I like the extra space that you get w/ the standard system (no woofer).

The stock system is good...but the monsoon makes you say.."damn..that is pretty good"...I'm not a big fan of the cars that make you pay 1000 bucks for 'better' sound and you can't really tell a difference...

I agree with HummerGuy, I have a stock radio/CD and i can't hardly tell the difference between Monsoon and the Regular. The regular rig does have some nice highs and lows but with Monsoon's 7th subwoofer speaker it adds a thump. It all depends on one's taste.

I personally would add the sub if I got the system without it. I have been into car audio for many years and used to compete. I am not that a-hole next to you at the light rattling your windows or driving through your neighborhood at 2AM though. I love a crisp, clean and full sounding system. A sub, even an 8" just adds so much to the overall sound and it doesn't have to be turned up to be a benefit. I would like to find out about possibly bumping the factory sub and enclosure up from an 8" to a 10" but no bigger than that.

Even a "tighter" 8" driver...the Monsoon is a little muddy. I may try an Image Dynamics ID8 after I verify the amp output (watts/ohms).

It's muddy? Man, that really sucks. The only reason for going that small is to get nice tight response. I only got to really listen to it for a minute or two and most of that time was spent trying to find a decent song.
Have you looked at Oz Audio? I think they are down your way but I don't really know much about them anymore. Never ran any of their subs but back when I used to compete all my highs, mids and mid bass up front were Oz separates. At that time they were pretty much top end and that was reflected in the cost. Can't believe what I used to spend on this stuff, $400 for a pair of tweeters 15 years ago http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif What was I thinking? Oh yea, I remember, listen to how incredible this system sounds http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Not looking to go all out anymore but let me know if you find out anything on changing the sub and I will do the same.

I too have felt your pain... http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I like the Monsoon system too, but GM had to balance those who like BOOM and those who like PUNCH for the Subwoofer. I have used many subs (not OZ though) and have had good luck with the Image Dynamics drivers. I have a single ID12 in my Cherokee (built an enclosure to replace the spare tire) and after three years it still has all the punch.

Recently took a pair old Petras dual voice coil 10s I had from about 15 years ago and put them in my Mountaineer and am amazed how good they still sound. I absolutely love nice tight bass.
The Monsoon sounds great.
The only problem I have is that my sub has a really annoying rattle now! It probably lasted about 300 miles from new before it started. I have been listening to some loud tunes but I don't think the sub should have started to rattle so soon from new.
Anyone else have a similar experience? I remember hearing on this forum somewhere that someone put sound deadening material around their sub and in their back doors. Has anyone else done that? Is that what I should do or should I bitch at the dealer to fix it when I go in for my first oil change?

Tim,
Do a search for a thread here on the forum about it. I recall someone else having a similar problem. I don't recall if he put any back near the sub but as I recall, HummerJim put Dynomat in a number of locations in his H3. I would definitely let the dealer know about it though. You spent good money on the vehicle and it shouldn't be doing that.
