I thought I would share my small issue with all of our H3 Members on here, just in case anyone else might be noticing a similar noise. I am experiencing a low sounding squeal from my fan belt on my H3.
It is most noticeable at cold engine start ups. Apparently when the assembly plant does it “fluid fills” sometimes there can be a slight spillage of coolant. If this fluid accidentally drips onto the fan belt it could cause a low squealing or chirping noise on cold start ups.
BTW: That issue has been corrected. http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I believe it only involves a very few early builds.

Yep, I've heard it twice. It appears to have gone away as it has been about two weeks since I've heard it, but yes I know exactly what you are talking about!
Well damn. I started it up today and heard it kick in for a few seconds. It's never done this before. I think you jinxxed it Marc! http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
What is the fix for it?

Yeah what is the fix for this, started today for some reason while making a sharp u-turn
My H3 was doing the same thing. The steering fluid is low. Take it to the dealer, have them look at it. A lot of them came out of the factory with some things wrong.

I had that same problem only when it is cold then it fades away. It trurned out to be a defective serpentine belt. The dealer changed the belt and it hasn't acted up since.

I'm getting the cold start noise that might be belt-related. This thread dates back to 2005, but now there might be some history and a TSB maybe? Anybody got some more recent info?

I'm getting the noise only at first cold start in the morning when outside temp is below 50F. Sound/pitch changes when I turn the wheel. I checked my ps fluid level and it's okay. Any TSB on this, I guess it's a belt issue?

Still making that noise almost every morning during cold starts. I better have the dealer fix it during next oil change visit.

It's getting louder now that early morning temp is about 50 degrees. And cranking the wheel (power steering) increases the noise. After 15 seconds or so, sound goes away.

Let's talk amongst ourselves. :D :D
But I was wondering if there's a TSB that I should refer to when I take it in for an oil change, etc.

Maybe there should be a FAQ TSB thread http://www.elcovaforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

Well got the afternoon call from dealer service and as expected they did nothing after having my H3 all day for an oil change.
So at that point I started giving direction and supervising. I referenced the TSB (since they claimed they checked for TSB's, right). 10 minutes later they called back and said they ordered the part referenced on the TSB.
So on Tuesday afternoon they will take my H3, install the part, keep it overnight, check it the next morning with a cold start, and call me when done. And I should get a loaner H2 per my request also.
Again - Thanks to 442 for digging up that TSBhttp://www.elcovaforums.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif. Even if it's not the specific solution, the point was taken, and I will get the H3 fixed.

Seems like a long time to order a pulley and tensioner. What are they ... rare as tie rods?
Hope they come in soon :beerchug:

Got a call today from dealer this morning. They are still mousing around trying to figure out if they now have both parts in stock.

Dealer called back again, and verified they had both parts in stock. So I took it in about 10:30AM. No H2's available, so they gave me an H3. Might be ready tonight:popcorn: , then I will field test it to see if noise is gone during morning cold starts:popcorn: .

I called them at 10:30 this morning. Now they are saying they have ordered a power steering pump which will take a couple of days to arrive....
I'll keep driving the base H3 that they gave me until then.

I'll find out if the power steering pump arrives today and gets installed....

No kidding. Power steering pump did not arrive today, maybe tomorrow (depending if it comes from Reno or factory). I'm getting sick of eating this popcorn.....

06-14-2007, 09:29 PM
 Haven't received a call today, yet. But they said if the pump doesn't arrive, I'll get my H3 back anyway until the pump comes.
Every morning when I pull out of my driveway people look at my H3 as the belt screechs loudly when cold. Good advertising for GM. People look at the nice new truck and wonder what's wrong with that POS.
So they've had my H3 for a total of 5 days and what was accomplished??????????. TBD........

GM better get with it on having parts available for the H3.

Good news at 4:00pm:) . After a total of 5 days in the shop, I have a new power steering pump. It's up to me to field test the rig with cold starts in the next few mornings and hope the noise is gone.
I'm glad to have it back!
The strippo H3 loaner was nice enough, but I miss the leather, XM, Hitchcam, power seats, garage door opener in visor, etc. in my own rig.

442 - Yes quiet is good, especially first thing in the morning with a cold start.
Again thanks for your help in pulling up the TSB (I think they replaced the tensioner and idler pulley plus ps pump, but I need to look and confirm other 2 parts besides the pump).
Initially the dealer service tech tried to do nothing, but ended up looking stupid, lazy, and less informed than the customer.:lame:

That happened to me with the brake grown.:grouphug:
My grown is now silent:shhh: after I put some brake lub on the rear pads.
I think I heard it once after power washing :giggling: :beerchug:
