When was this last large layoff? When in the past fifteen years have they done a layoff of salaried (non-union) personnel?
To answer your question....nope. Then again, I have fifteen years vested, plus 20 years vested with uncle sam. So, if they laid me off tomorrow, I would head for Utah, get a place in the desert, off road, and shoot my guns from my front porch.
However, i believe I will be employed until I retire in about 4 years. The salaried ranks are quite thin due to a lot of the early retirements they have offered over the past few years (never offered me one, though http://www.elcova.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif)

I don't thing BG has any worries about closing, as long as the Vette keeps selling. I also believe GM can turn it around, with a few "ifs."
The union guys have to face the facts, their health care will become exactly what we, the salaried personnel have, so they will pay per month and have a deductible. The job bank has to go. The company has to keep designing more exciting vehicles. They have some coming out that are pretty good looking.
GM's quality has gone up quite a bit in the past few years, and these figures are shown on the JD Powers surveys.
As for the pensions, at the quarterly meeting I went to, Wagner clearly stated that GM is completely vested in their pension plans...health care for retires, is another matter.

Klint,
It all depends in your credit, remmenber most of the banks are Fico driven. In stand alone seconds the interest is higher. For such low amount, you are better of with a Heloc. You'll be paying between 6% to 7% (prime+rate). Let me know if interested, I can give you a few pointers. By the way nice looking truck...

I never realized the large percentage of military here, bt it should not surprise me. I left the Active duty Army (Cavalry, we go and find the enemy and mark them with our burning bodies) so I could spend some time with my kids before they want to drive my H3. Figured the National Guard would be a nice one week end a month, two weeks a year escape from my other job. As I have been deployed two times for three years in the past five years my plans hve nor worked out quite as I expect. But the good side , I get to have 120 armored HMMWV I can choose from to drive.

That looks like it's on a K12 platform--Raytheon has one similar that's pretty wild to look at. No metallic devices allowed near it when operating due to magnetic fields created.

Klint, did you refinance the $19000 on your Hummer? I owed $19000 also but since I attempted to cancel a credit card they gave me a 1.99 APR on transfer balances for $14000 with no transfer fees for the life of the loan. Since I had about 5 grand in my account I paid that much on the 5.49 APR hummer loan leaving a balance of about $14000. Hopefully I will have the title soon after the balance transfer clears. It's crazy how you can just bypass the loan system (house/auto/personal loan APR brackets) these days if you have good credit.

I'm a civil engineer in the bridge structures dept. and do an occasional wedding/birthday/funeral video on the side, using two Canon GL2 cams and a 17" Powerbook. Contemplating the new dual core Macbook Pro or a dual core Sony SZ laptop in the near future, but can't seem to decide.

Update: just checked the car loan account; they accepted the balance trancefer and now it shows zero owed. Hello title, hello 1.99% APR.

I'm a nerfherding, bantha farmer from Tatooine who has a thing for hunting mynocks and chasing Jedi princesses in Corellian cargo freighters.

Back on Earth, I am a piled higher and deeper research geek for our Uncle Sammy.

Killian - from where in Pennsylvania did you migrate from? I have been thinking about a similar relocation...

"Job" doesn't really apply to me, I stay in my room all day and write furiously, what I write about is personal. I write and do private things - like bits of reading and jotting down. I literally have boxes full of bits of paper.

There's not a lot of things on the television that I like but I'm just on the lookout for something interesting. Sometimes I watch the news, nothing much grips me. I'm more concerned with domestic events than in Iran or whatever. I don't really stretch that far anymore. I'm not interested in the rest of the world at all. I like some of the adverts, some of them makes me laugh. Public taste really disappoints me.

I have prayed in the past but recently, tha last six months or so, I've given up slightly. I never knelt by the bed and clasped my hands - it's more comfortable if you get into bed and wrap the covers round and drift into some kind of religious reverie.
