View Full Version : Disconnecting the battery? Radio Install

Finally gathered all the parts to install my n2. Normally I wouldn't disconnect the battery to install a radio, but I've read warnings for the h3 that say do not disconnect the battery when installing, and do disconnect it when installing.

I'd do it with the battery connected, but thought I'd ask here before since I'm not sure with the mixed warnings and onstar and the airbags on the truck. thanks

Its a good idea to disco the battery to avoid any kind of possible electrical short that might happen.It doesnt hurt the H3 to do this all it does is reset the computer no big deal. I have installed aftermarket radio myself.

Good thing to know and not freak out the key will get stuck in the ignition if in when you disconnect.

I have installed a radio and several after market lights each disconnecting the battery negative terminal. Never had a problem.

I've installed many aftermarket radios before without disconnecting the battery and had to issues.

the only reason why I dont disconnect is i want to test on the fly so that I get the connection right the first time. I've never shorted or popped a fuse before... knock on wood!

However, i'm very carefule when making my connections to not short anything. If you're not confortable in installing a unit while connected to the battery, disconnecting it doesnt hurt.

I can't remember where I read it, I think it was in one of the h3's manuals where it said not to disconnect the battery, because it could cause problems to some systems. This is my first gm, and I just wanted to make sure they didn't have some special system with the battery that I might mess up.

But thanks for clearing that up for me.

Disconnecting the battery is ok, and I recommend it if you are not knowledgeable in connecting possibly hot wires, and knowing not to connect into the SIR system.
GM recommends for any procedure that involved slicing wires to disconnect the battery due to the air bags.
