Timing Chain

I have a 2003 H2. A friend had a timing chain on a 2005 PT Cruiser break at 100K miles, destroying a valve. He had to junk the car as it was too expensive to fix.

My H2 has 100400 miles. Should I replace the timing chain? Thanks for your help.

Re: Timing Chain

Chains with steel gears dont have to be replaced at 100K like the cheap cars with plastic gears do:)

Re: Timing Chain

PT Cruiser has a timing belt which is a maintenance item at 100000km, chains are not a maintenance item

Thanks. I did not know PT Cruiser had plastic gears or that H2 has steel.

Mine is around 250K :), but a friend had Perkins TD self-destruct at 60K!!! They don't make them like used to.

Back in the day the worst thing with timing chains were stretching over time and throwing your timing off. Now with all the computers and electronics that's no longer a worry as the comp will just compensate for any lost timing.

Benz 300D im getting ready for my Rover...

It was reported to have 120,000 miles in 1992, but then driven regularly until 2009

Mathematically, if they continued to drive it ~13k miles a year until 2009, you're looking at almost 350k on it.
