PLEASE HELP, Rattles ugh !!!

Hey Guys, first timer here. Got my H3 3 months ago, 2 weeks into it, rattle, Rattle rattle! I am SO frustrated. The major one is just over the back seat in the roof (i thought possibly a tack weld broke loose, but usually only does it in the cold mornings. No. 2 rattle is somewhere behind the glove box, again usually when cold. I have Rattle no. 3 behind the light switch/dial, and lastly, the suspension squeeks. OK, now I know I am a bit anal and want my truck tight and quiet since it is brand new, BUT, is this normal, anyone else experience this? I hate to take it to the dealer and have them rip down the head liner and dashboard, then for sure it wont be right. PLEASE HELP ! Tony

i have the same problems with my 08. crazy rattles are coming from the back of mine. i think its the spare rattling. i brought it to the dealer and they said it was the exhaust. they put new parts on and i still have the loud rattling.

hey man thanks for the input. yeah that "loose exhaust" excuse is lame. I do hear the spare mount rattle over serious bumps, but thats not it. I actually had my girl drive me around and sat in the back seat to listen. Its directly above the backrest of the back seat, and it rattles, loud. i thought at first it was some cables or wires hanging down but it just seems too loud. I am wondering if there is a cross member right there and the tack weld broke loose. But I have had dealers in the past tear down the headliners and dashboards, and things are just NEVER right after that.

I have the one behind the glove compartment when it is cool.

Haven't taken it in yet.

I wasn't trying to be a wise ass, honestly...

but at 61 years old i've owned enought vehicles to know rattles 99% of the time need the dealer...if you pull trim, or body parts or headliners and there are problems latter, and they can see someone other then the dealer took a peak it gives them the excuse to say

"HEY ! someone did unauthorized repairs and no more warrenty"

HUMMER is real good but in my opinion there are a few thing you just don't play with during the warrenty period...

For your rear rattle, try takin off the door that covers your jack and tightening the jack hold down knobs. I've had to do that a couple times in mine. As for the others, check what you can then take it in

Re: PLEASE HELP, Rattles ugh !!!

Hate to say this I have owned 9 Hummers and ALL OF THEM RATTLED like crazy. This is a characteristic of the Hummer Brand. My Brand new $130k Hummer H1 squeaked and had rust on it!!!! All 4 of my H2s had horrible undercarrige corrosion and my H3s creaked as if they were 150 years old. Turn up your radio and the noises go away. If you take it to the dealer you risk plastic parts getting bent, broken or cracked. Push up on the headliner when you are driving and see if that stops it. If so than you need to drop the headliner and tape/fix what ever is making the noise.

Just my couple 2 cents :-)

Thanks guys, especially backnblack and the tip for the jack tightening. All good stuff and I will try exactly what you guys reccomend, I REALLY appreciate the input. I kinda had a feeling about its just characteristic of the Hummer, but I guess I needed to hear it :) Great idea on pushing up on the headliner, and tighening the jack, going out to try it right now. I still welcome any other input. Thank you again guys and I will let you know how things turn out! Tony

For what? The dealer does not know squat. They are lucky they can spell HUMMER. Squeaks are unavoidable on these trucks. Like I said. I have owned 9 of them and currently own 2. I am also the president of our local Hummer Club and all 150 of my Members squeak and creak :D

I currently have 2 H-3's. One has 36000 miles, never had a rattle. The second one my 83 year old mom drives. It has 9000 miles and she drives on a POT HOLED DIRT ROAD 4 times a day and she doesn't drive slow. Its only about a mile on the dirt road and it ain't to smooth, no rattles ever...both were purchased in Jan 2006...

so ALL HUMMERS DO NOT RATTLE !

83 Years old = CANNOT HEAR CREAKS or RATTLES :D

61 Years old = CANNOT HEAR CREAKS or RATTLES :OWNED:

Kidding of course.......But all Hummers rattle. If yours does not rattle somewhere than you have a Hummer that was built on free lunch day at the GM plant.;-)

Are you providing Hornsby's :-)? You are def lucky if your H3 does not Rattle. I wish we all were that lucky.

Re: PLEASE HELP, Rattles ugh !!!

I forgot to mention. Someone on another forum said they had a rattle in their headliner and he took the dome light out and could see the wiring harness for the light just flopping around in there. He used a can of expanding foam in the hole to stop it. He said it fixed the rattle, but if I were you I would find a cleaner, less retarded way to fix yours if it is indeed the problem.

I'll agree with Ducky on this, although I don't have the benefit of his experience (I'm only 46 and my hearing is good). :)

I have my second H3. The first one was an early manufacture '06 model and it never had a rattle at all. 20 months and 40k miles and it was still tight and noise free.

Second one is at 37k and one small rattle has just started. It is in the headliner right at the junction over the drivers door. Not very noisy, but in a bad place (right by my ear). Going back to the dealer as soon as I can manage to part with it for a few days.

Overall, both are the tightest, quietest SUV's I've ever owned (includes a Lexus RX300 that had dash rattle early on).

I anticipate number 3 being the same....

HUmble, Have you and ducky ever taken them off-road. I wonder if its only when you wheel these trucks they begin to rattle..lol. I make my Hummer twist in positions that would be illegal in some states and after every event I creak and crack more :-)

We should start a vote/poll for creaks and Rattles so we can get an idea of how many actually do.

Re: PLEASE HELP, Rattles ugh !!!

Does anybody know how to remove the dome light? I'm more so referring to the rear one but I'm sure both are the same. Is it just held in with clips or screws? I also have a tapping noise and I really think its coming from the headliner right behind the rear dome light. Probably a wire.
