This is about a MATH TEST the Justice Department says is discriminatory! A freaking MATH TEST!!! Now you don't have to be so bright.

When I took the Math portion about 9 years ago I missed only 6 questions out of over 100 and was the first one finished. I swear the questions only went to 4th grade.

VIRGINIA BEACH — The city has reached a settlement with the U.S. Justice Department to resolve allegations that it discriminated against black and Hispanic police recruits.

Under a consent decree filed Monday in federal court in Norfolk, the city will change the way it scores the police entrance exam.

The Justice Department had complained that the math portion of the exam had an adverse effect on minority applicants and unfairly excluded them from being hired.

The city will offer to let 124 black and Hispanic former applicants resume the hiring process. Those recruits failed the math test between 2002 and 2005 but would have passed under the new standards.

The city also will create a $160,000 fund to compensate those applicants....

From 2002 to mid-2005, about 85 percent of white applicants passed the math exam, compared with 59 percent of blacks and 66 percent of Hispanics.

Under the old standard, Virginia Beach required all recruits to score 70 percent on each of three written tests for reading comprehension, grammar and spelling, and math...

VIRGINIA BEACH — The U.S. Justice Department has found that the math portion of the Virginia Beach Police Department’s entrance exam discriminates against black and Hispanic applicants.

In a letter to the city released Wednesday, the Justice Department said its findings were based on results of a math test administered to all entry-level police officers.

The Justice Department said it will sue the city if Virginia Beach does not take appropriate measures to end discrimination and provide “sufficient remedial relief” to previous job applicants.

On Wednesday, city officials said they do not discriminate and the math portion of the exam assesses job-related skills.

I have taken those tests! If you were paying attention in class it shouldn't be a problem. I believe they are still multiple choice too.

I'm sorry but this is just plain wrong. Don't pay them for being stupid. If you MUST pay them due to a law suit then pay them to go back to school so that they can pass the GD Test! Don't lower the passing score!

I wonder........They say within the next 10 years the Northern Virginia area will be majority hispanic leaving whites/caucasions as the minority. Should we create the NAAWP?????

When people now apply for fire department jobs around here they are given bonus points for being a minority. This also goes for promotions within the department itself.

They are.

Now the dolts that continue with the hiring process have to take the BPAD test next. That's an expensive test and on top of that, I bet most won't pass anyway.

Shaggy, this was caused by the justice department, not really any politician's fault.

CO Hummer, yes. I passed all the tests, physical, math, verbal, BPAD (with one of the highest scores they'd seen), polygragh. Everyone of them, but too many people had made it that far so I was cut. They said it was because I had a ticket in '89.

My last one, BTW.

I did well because I had one State Trooper and one VB police officer giving me tips, and playing racquetball together 4-5 times a week to get into shape. They told me all about the BPAD, which made that test a breeze.

Later that year a person that must have gotten lucky and passed the math test was arrested while in uniform. He'd just gotten out of the academy I would have attended and was soliciting sexual favors. What a dumbass.

It's not whether they got the answer right or wrong but how they felt about the question.

...and make sure any notation on the test is done in a non-threatening purple pen. Color psycologists say purple is a less negative and more constructive color for grading because it has red's sense of authority but also blue's feeling of serenity.
