Map Lights

I want to replace my existing map lights with a more tactical "Red" light to eliminate "vision flare out" when a passenger needs the interior light on while I'm driving at night.

I can't find the bulb type and the current bulbs lack any markings. Will either of these work? Thanks in advance!

Re: Map Lights

You could just getto wrap them in some red saran or plastic wrap on the bulb with a band...:o

Re: Map Lights

so did you find the right bulb? I am going to try and install an additional light behind the sunroof switch. Any one know if I can tap the power from the switch for the light?

Wow that reminds me of running aircraft engines at night, the red cockpit lights on. I think I might have to steal your idea....

Perfect! It reminds me of the days I flew around in the CH-46. It gives off enough light for the front cab, I would not recommend filling all of your dome lights, it's very tactical and may not be practical, but is great for map and use while driving at night.

I have 4 blue LED for the dome too... PM me if you want them, $10 per pair, and that includes shipping.

How many bulbs are in the dome lights? Just two?

My VW Touareg had a red dash light. It was nice to have.

Do you have a sun roof? The reason I ask is that they moved the dome lights back to accomodate the sunroof so I might be missing some lights someware, in fact my dealer just ordered an extra dome light and I am going to attempt to put one in behind the sun roof switch...hope I don't screw something up!

Re: Map Lights

How many lights do you think you are missing? I've got an "06" and do not have a sunroof. I have 2 dome light fixtures, and don't recall where the dome lights were in the H3s with sunroof that I've been in.

Can someone with a sunroof help H3less out? This week, I'll try to get up a photo of both the front and rear dome lights without the light shield.

Re: Map Lights

They must have removed the front one on the '08, you would think they could have put it right behind the sunroof switch; I am sounding like a broken record! Anyway I bought something they took away because I bought the optional sunroof; let's see $950 for a sun roof + paying for the dome light they took out? That's a really good system for making money, charge customers for an option and remove something that every cheap econbox has and charge them again for it! Plus I have to figure out how to put it in and tap for power (which my dealer says they don't do). Makes me wonder if the wire is in the general vicinity and if I can find it? HELP! I need some one in the know that can tell me were to find the wire in need! I am going to go find F-STOP he should know!

Yeah, that's BS, I would have though that a sunroof option would provide a modified map light and dome near a cealing control panel? Where do you toggle the sunroof.. is it on the cab cealing, dash, door?

On a side note, I drove home in tactical mode this evening. I had no problem driving and viewing my left and right mirrors. In addition I had visibility in the cab to see anything from the console to the floor.

Anyways... why go red? ... BTW, I married an Eye Doctor, she can confirm..

I'm curious about the importance of red displays and dark adaptation, so
I looked around, couldn't find anything written (I'm sure there is
someplace, though)

Dark Adaptation and Red Displays

Vision involves both scotopic (night vision:rods) and photopic (day
vision: cones) perception. The eye relies primarily on the rods for
night vision. These rods achieve their last fraction of dark adaptation
entirely through chemical saturation with rhodopsin over a duration of 30
minutes. Dark adaptation painstakingly achieved can be destroyed in
seconds by the light stimulating the rods. Red light is alleged to
protect the dark adaptation of the rods by stimulating only one type of
cone (long-wavelength color perception).

The low-cost, mass-produced Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) used as
astronomical equipment light sources are made of gallium arsenide
phosphide (GaAsP) on a gallium arsenide (GaAs) substrate using a
vapor-phase epitaxy process. They emit visible red light at a wavelength
at about 6480 Angstroms. Changing the ratio of arsenic to phosphorous
and the introduction of nitrogen dopants cause the emission of
yellow-green light at about 5850 Angstroms.

Re: Map Lights

That all makes perfect sense! ;) :giggling:
Thanks for the info. The control for the roof is right above the mirror on the panel between the visors. There seems to be just enough room for an additional light (with red bulbs) I just need to figure out how to tie it into the rest of the dome lights!
