I'm trying to find a way I can mount a 12" laptop for 2 reasons. First, I'd like to get a larger image of GPS from my Garmin. Second, long trips would be nice to play a DVD (not that I would watch while driving ) I've seen some really expensive ways to do this ($500) but that just seems silly to me. Anyone have a quick, easy, cheap install idea

Funny but that would probably work.
Actually you might be able to craft some sort of boxed frame on top of the dog house that the lap top could sit in. Certainly would keep lateral moment safe, just need to worry about severe bounce depending on how deep the frame is. Just a thought. I have the iQue from Garmin. Find that with voice commands I can keep having to look at it down. On the trail, again mainly for reference at times. I think I have seen someone selling a metal mount that attaches to the windshield pillar as well. This might be the $500 solution your talking about though. Not sure on cost. Oops found it... http://www.bluehummer.com/radiotray.html actually for radios but perhaps they could fabricate one for a laptop. $140 2001 H1 Opentop Former 03 H2 Adventure Series Homepage: http://www.hummerh1.net |
Joe,
Thanks, I checked the mount and it looks like it will block my view through the passenger window. I was trying to keep that from happening, good idea though! Alec, Yeah, I use velcro for everything too. I just figured there would be something more permanent but maybe not. My concern again is that with the laptop open it will block too much of my view. I guess I just need to give it a try. |
Jason, I've been trying to come up with a way to do this too.
I've been toying w/the idea of more temporary solution. A "bean bag" type of cushion that would be heavy enough to stay put in stops/starts and turns, that could be positioned whereever you wanted on the doghouse. You could stick the laptop to it with velcro. Just thinking John ---------- '02 HMCO |
John,
That's what I do with my GPS, which works just fine. I'll give something a try and post a pic. |
Hey Buckeye,
Drop me your address and I'll send you a couple of catalogs that I have. There are quite a few laptop mounts out there - usually for police vehicles etc. The base mount screws right into your center console and then the staff is made from flex tubing. The laptop acutally slides into a metal frame. I recently mounted this unit into a real estate's client car - worked out very good and is extremely solid. I really liked the flex tubing so you could adjust the tilt and placement at will. Prices run from 300-600 bucks. Hey Buckeye,
Here is one online source that also has a pretty good selection: http://www.jottodesk.com/dept.asp?id=1 Help Computers www.helpcomputers.net Member of the Denver Chapter of the S&B since 2003 |

http://www.autocareequipment.com/images/CompMount2.JPG This is what I did. I used a mount from Havis Shields. www.havis.com I have actually upgraded it recently and have not took a new picture. I actually bolted a piece of 1/2" stock square tubing to the mount and extended it to above the drivers side ashtrap and bolted it to that. The mount does not swivel anymore but my passengers do look at the computer. |
They have some pictures of a Hummer install in their photo gallery section.

This is what I did. Eye glasses with a built-in monitor. http://www.4hiddenspycameras.com/eyeglmo.html I'm trying to help! I bet you didn't think of it.

I mounted my Sony VAIO TR3A on the dash with one of those sticky pads - Fit perfect - Best Buys has them - they are great for any thing sunglasses cellphone etc.

I was on Ebay the other day looking for this exact idea. They have a number of different types of mounts that appear to made from plumbers pipe and various other things. I think my search was for "laptop mounts". That place is a great source for DYI'rs.

Expensive but talk about all the adjustment capabilities you could ever want. You'd have to fab a laptop base mount but you could incorporate that with the RubberDuck Laptop Mount... http://www.rubberduck4x4.com/laptopmount.htm |
