I encountered a grizzly in Yellowstone Park back in 1986. Not sure why he (or she) didn't turn on me. But I was able to get back to the car, which was not that far away, but far enough that if the grizzly wanted me for a play toy, I would probably not be writing this message at this time. I have also encountered bears in the Smoky Mountain State Park; however, they are more afraid of you (normally) than you are of them. (Although this year there has been a few maulings in that area.)
This year on Cache road (access is via Arches National Park), my son and I came face-to-face with a Mountain Lion. We were in the Hummer, but what if we had been outside walking around?
Some of us do go to areas where there are some critters that are dangerous (not counting Detroit). I would prefer never having to shoot one, but if it was me (or my family) versus it, I sure hope I have a big handgun.
