My enlisted life was spent as a Russian linguist. I did that for ten years.
My comissioned life was spent as a Missile Combat Crew Commander, Minuteman, under South Dakota, and as a Senior Command Post Controller for KC-135Rs in Oklahoma. I retired shortly after the Cold War ended as a captain. With the draw down, a captain with 23 years was firmly in the cross hairs! I wish I was still in the Air Force, and I tried to re-join after 9-11. I was politely told I had been retired too long.
My son-in-law is active duty Air Force. He's an EOD tech. Just returned from Iraq a couple of months ago. He went when the Army ran short of EOD personnel, and they are plug and play in any service.
So, in a way, my career continues, but vicariously.
