Despite everything, I thoroughly enjoyed this obstacle. Very similar to John Bull, except you're going downhill. Let's see now, Day 2. Day 2 started bright and early...and cold! There was frost on everything. Lucky we had some Hot Chocolate, Hot French toast, and Hot omelets! :) Can't beat that. After the wonderful breakfast provided by E and Rocks, we headed out at about 10:00am. A little of a late start, but you can't complain when you're being well-fed. We headed down the path towards Little Sluice, and the bypass. The sad part is, we're already pulling over to let others by... Little Sluice bypass is essential granite boulders/slabs and steep inclines and decents...with a couple of narrow passes. I think we also drove around Spiker Lake, but I have no recollection of what it looked like... :) After Little Sluice Bypass, we hit Old Sluice/Granite Slab...Did we take a bypass on this also bebes? This wasn't too bad either. I think the highlight was watching Drty take a 3-4 foot drop. If only I had my camera handy... :) Again, we let some other rigs by...including ATVr's and a couple of motorbikes. A quick lunch, and we're off again, some more slabs...and then Rox bends a tie-rod. Now, when rox tells you that she wouldn't let H2F or I change her tie-rod, she isn't kidding. She pretty much flat out refused to let me touch the wrenches. :) Oh well, someone had to turn the steering column, and since it was Rox's rig...we let her do it. I wouldn't have been so pushy about it, except for the fact that neither H2F nor Rox have ever changed a tie-rod by themselves, and I had just swapped my Fabtechs in on Wednesday.... Sorry Rox. So, while she was turning the wheel, I slid in there and started taking the stupid thing apart... We got her back on up and running, and the kids had a chance to jump out and throw rocks... After almost catching up with the others, we headed through some more tippy areas and a small water crossing. We were then at Buck Island Dam. It's funny to see all these natural obstacles to the vehicle, and then all of a sudden, hit a man-made obstacle. It wasn't too bad though. Some more tippy stuff, and steep stuff, but we were all through. Then we headed into the forest/trees to the Pass at 6534feet. Again, tippy but I don't think it was too bad...my first time being strapped though. Rox, and H2F took a different line after me, and walked right over though...At about that time, it was probably around 5:00pm, and I think most of us had thought at one point or another to maybe stop now, and setup camp...But, we figured, one more big obstacle, can't be that bad...- well, that's what I thought, so we headed on to the Big Suck Sluice. Oh, and did it ever! The first thing I remember about that is looking ahead of me (I figured something was up when everyone started hiking past my vehicle, both in our group, and not in our group) And I see Drty, perched on to large boulders, pretty much high-centered, with another large boulder directly in front of him. Holy Crap! I don't remember for sure, but I think he had his winch out. Of course, now we're really screwed. Little did we know, that wasn't the worst of it. So by the time he gets around the boulder in front of him, and continues on, I pull up to the very same place. Luckily, we had some help. A few of the onlookers had seen how Drty and Hiker had gotten through, and they were now helping spot us through. Hallelujah! :) Following their spot, we get another spot just around the second boulder...and then further down, another spot. I think what helped me realize that this was a lot more difficult than the other sections, was the fact that we had 5 or 6 spotters going at one time...trying to get people through at different sections of the Sluice. To top it off, it was now dark out. Spotting with a flashlight brings the SUCK! After getting about half way down, to the tree and double boulder spot, we pull over and let the rigs behind us by...including the red one, which we run into later.... This is another "what the H is Sewie doing???" part. He decided to take some jacked up line, that basically was 3 or 4 3 foot drops in a row. To top it off, his locker wasn't working, and we basically had to push him off the short cliffs....Sewie, you're messed in the head... :) Ok, back to the phalac tree and boulders, as Drty is spotting me through this VERY narrow, scratch your rig up, section...one of the jeepers that we let by, comes walking up to him. "Excuse me, can you use your winch to pull us out...we're stuck." Now, I know, if this had been any other jeeper, Drty would have atleast waited until I was completely clear of the obstacle before taking off. But, this wasn't "any other jeeper." This was a young brunette, with bigguns and a tanktop on. He looked right at her, then looked at me...muttered something incomprehensible and turned around and followed her away.... :twak::jump: So, we were left to fend for ourselves for about an hour before Drty finally showed back up. We finished that 500 yards of trail by about 9:30pm and slowly headed through a nice deep water crossing (that finally stopped my brakes from squeeking), a couple of tight areas...and then stopped again. Rox comings strolling by, "Did you see what's up there." "No." "You'd better look." So, as our moral was somewhat hammered from the last few hours, and we were so anxious to get into our bags/tents, when I saw what was up...I about crap my pants. Drty was perched on two boulders again, and was winching himself...again (if I remember correctly). So, Randy (my co-pilot) and I, decide to scout out how much more crud we have to endure....Some more drop-offs, tippy narrow area, then more uneven drop-offs... That took us until about 1:00am. We were dead tired. H2F popped a bead about half way down. I was trying to settle my boys back down, and Randy decided to lend a hand. While they were changing the tire, I headed back up the trail to check on them with my camera and camcorder, when next thing I hear...someone laying on their horn. I look down back at my rig, and some jeeper is nose-nose with my rig, laying on his horn. So, this got me a little upset, seeing as how I had just got the kids calmed down. So I head back to have a word with him. Lo and behold, it's the same red jeeper that had passed us by on the Big Sluice. "Aren't you the same...?" "Why are you coming back again?" "We want to run there and back again.." "You guys are in H2's, what's taking so long." "Don't play stupid, you know exactly why it's taking us so long...we also popped a bead." "Can't you move out of my way." "Well, like I said, we're H2's, there aren't any other lines we can take down this blasted hill. Besides, we want to get off this hill more than you do, so just chill." "Even if I moved out of the way, you're not getting by the other three rigs behind me." So, after the rigs were down, and as we were driving by him...we here "Damage is inevitable, just live with it." or something like that. So, we were through...we came upon the Rubicon Bridge...and then setup a quick camp and crashed....So ends day 2. If I made any errors, let me know guys... :)

I think I popped the bead further up. The area was much tighter, as Shaggy and Randy had to manhandle the spare up the hill and over the tree root on the driver side, and we had to dig a little to allow the passanger door to open (barely) wide enough to operate the Hi-Lift handle.
Please tell Randy I owe him a steak dinner next time he passes through SoCal!! :D

I would think that it was the perfect time to have them.We couldn't spot with offroad lights on. It was too difficult to see the tires under the rig even with the headlights on. I kept the parking lights on when I needed a spot and turned the headlights on when I was on my own. It would be handy to have some lights shining down under the truck for times like this.

I just read the full 20 pages and though I'm not a mall parking 4 wheeler, Rubicon might be a little over my head. I wouldn't be afraid of doing the trip, it looks like a blast, I'd be more afraid of trashing my truck. I can't believe how close to some of those rocks/boulders you guys came to.
Even that one pic of the seal by the bridge... whoever's H2 is posing on the bridge looks like it barely fits.
Looks like ya'll had a blast. Thanks for the pics and the opportunity to live vicariously through your lives.
Perhaps on something with a little less of trashing my daily driver.
Kudos to you all.

Ok, so let's finish this. Hopefully, haven't forgotten too much. :) Day 3 - This was definately a day that we all had decided "it was time to get out of here." After going to bed at around 2am, most everyone was awake by 7:30 or so and breaking what little camp was setup - just tents :). I'm not sure if anyone really ate much, but I had hot chocolate and toast - the kids had the same. After visiting the morning "bucket-in-a-tent," we set off. We had essentially stayed within 100 yards of the "bridge over the rubicon." That's why H2F got those great daylight pics....Yeah, if you remember right, we actually drove over the bridge at 2 in the morning. We headed off to Cadillac Hill and Observation point which would be the "end of the major rough stuff." I thought to myself, this can't be too bad. Most Hummer owners that come here in groups usually run this end of the trail, and they make it fine. So, we set off. The scenery was a bit of a change from the prior two days, a lot more trees and level ground...reminded me of the pacific northwest. Some narrow points between trees and only a few narrow boulder areas. We end up at the Rubicon Springs area...numerous honey buckets (outhouses) show up scattered all over the terrain. Quick potty stop for some of the others, and we're off again. As the terrain starts to go uphill again, we are suddenly stopped. Of course, never a great sight to see while on a trail, noone ever deserving, but considering the encounter from the previous night, I couldn't help but feel the "see, that's what you get" feeling... :) The rude jeeper from the previous night's encounter was found trying to right his rig. It looks like he came off of a 20-30 foot dropoff and ended up with his rig belly-up. He asked us for help, and we did. Drty served as anchor point for the front of the righ, as they tried rolling it to the passenger's side. Then, later, Rox was used as another anchor point.
After he got himself flipped back over, Bebes offered an oil spill kit that we hope was used and we set off on our way. The climb into Cadillac Hill was not bad at all, a couple of switch backs though, and then we're stopped again. We hit probably the most difficult part of Cadillac Hell. It was a right turn on the switchback, going through a rather narrow, boulder-infested area, and then over a slap that tipped your rig downhill. To make matters worse, a bypass was located right at that point, and it had eroded away part of the trail, making it more narrow with a higher chance of sliding off the side of the trail. After about an hour or so working at it, we finally got everyone through. The rest of the trail continued through switch backs, a few wet areas with water flowing down the trail, and some more squeezes through trees. Finally, we ended up at Observation Point at about 1:30pm. I can't even describe the sense of accomplishment at reaching that point in our trek. It felt great! We all lined up for some ceremonial pics, H2F's wife broke out some asian style noodle lunch and the kids played. The view was great! Although, we really didn't have a clue about where we had just come from. :) We chatted with some other jeepers that showed up, and after hanging out for about an hour, we headed off. The rest of the trail was rocky so made for slow-going, but was essentially un-eventful. Near the tail-end of the trail, I ran into the red jeeper again, and his passenger came over to say thanks again. He was sincere in telling me to make sure that everyone knew that they were grateful that we stopped to help. We were at the staging point for the Rubicon. We drove a couple of more miles down gravel road that then changed to paved. And file met up with the front group. We started airing up at about 4:30pm. That was about it. A great group shot, constant monitoring of the gas tank level (mine was dinging for half the day), and we set off to Lake Tahoe area to gas up and head out. I think I have the record...it took me 31.25 gallons to fill'er up. :) Thanks again to Drty and everyone else who made this trip happen. Thanks for the great spotting from everyone, even my co-pilot (who, by the way, had no prior experience with spotting :o), and great food!

From the RTF website:
Syd's Grave: located at the base of Cadillac Hill, with some other *mock* graves that you might find. Originally named for Syd Mainwaring. According to the Book written by Peg Presba on "Jeepers Jamboree, The first 40 Years", Syd Mainwaring passed away in 1975. It was a solemn crowd who stood watching as the helicopter took off to scatter his ashes over the Rubicon Trail on July 22nd. 1975. The grave stone reads "A man to match our mountains", that's how everyone felt about him.
I don't know anything about a mineshaft. But I heard about a tunnel from Buck Island Lake to Loon Lake. But we didn't really have time to do much exploring. ;)

I tried outside, got stuck a little and jacked up the front and backed off, then I tried the inside and got good and stuck but managed to get off it also. Then the built up jeep came and spotted me on the outside where I really got stuck. Then he went around me on the inside and pulled me over.
That hole sucked in front of the boulder. I got stuck going out, the same way you guys were going in the picture. Coming in over that rock was no problem.

DRTY this is the first time i took a while to go through and look at pics and Dude You did an outstanding job of your photot dieary of the trip as well as a few others that submitted pics.
Man it is so beautiful maybe once i get through with the mall Queens present sponsors use i convert to offroad or get on 03 for real good price and improve it to do offroading. These pics makes me want to get a offroad rig right away.
Thanks for documenting what it looks like to at least see the beauty You got to experience.

What a great trip that was. One of many. Still have the beast with all the dents and scratches. Actually had an estimate to bring it back to it's former beauty and could not. I love it the way it is. I tow it behind my rv everywhere I go. Last year we spent four months on the road to Alaska. This year it was seven months throughout the US and that Hummer follows me everywhere!
