(I hope I don't come off sounding like an ass, but:

This group, plus a couple of others, plan on running some of the very hardest trails where broken parts and body damage isn't just possible, but most likely. Therefore, we need to limit ourselves to one or two more trucks at the most on those days, otherwise the trails won't be completed and a fun day will quickly turn into a nightmare.

If you want to run Pritchett, or some of the others on that level, find some folks that want to run it with you. Just keep your group relatively small.

Everyone wants to wheel with everyone throughout the week, and anyone can run any trail at anytime, but group size needs to be limited on many of the trails. I can't imagine how long it would take to push 20+ trucks through Hell's at a fun, easy pace.)

Ditto

I think this has been touched on before.

It took 9 or 10 hours for 9 or 10 trucks to do PS/GS and some were complaining of the pace then as we were trying to avoid the all day/night affair that occured on the last trip that was made.

It's no for someone to be stuck at the back of a large pack and not get to wheel the same as those further up the line.

Smaller groups are a must.

KenP
12-06-2006, 01:46 AM
We just hung at the rear of the line on Hell's. We'd sit around and talk for 20-30 minutes, then we'd speed off, catch the group, park and sit around again. Yippee!!!!----.....

Usually there aren't 20 rigs that show up.No matter, we are still limiting the size of our group on certain trails.

Doesn't mean if someone wants to run the same trail, they don't do it in another group right behind or another day. It only makes sense to break up into smaller groups when hitting the harder trails and we are likely going to be breaking at least one thing on each truck.

And I agree about the smaller groups, at least on a couple of trails. It's really going to be something if that many people show up. As far as the waiting game goes, it's part of wheeling.

X2: we need to set up groups of 6 or less for the harder trails like Golen Spike, Pritchett, or Behind the Rocks and BFE Area.

I also think it;s best for newb's to get a feel for their comfort level on a couple of easier trails first. Also for them to know what their truck is capable of doing on the slick rock.

I'm sure most going on this trip will be fine. ...just an idea.

Also for them to know what their truck is capable of doing on the slick rock.Kane Creek would be a good one for some to sample if they think they'll want to run harder trails. The paint scratches alone will be worth the trip.

Really tho, it's all about everyone having fun and you won't have fun spending 15+ hours on a trail while getting you're truck dented and broken.

There're too many awesome, tough, fun trails that won't hurt your truck to run if you don't have experience or a high tolerance for body damage.

while i am not a newb to off roading, i am a newb to MOAB....

i think it is a good idea to break up into smaller groups..

my concern is that each group has someone that know the trail at least a little.

a small group of people that have never seen the trail is slower then a long line of people with someone leading that know the trial

you know what i mean?

When we first started wheeling Moab, we were in the same boat. None of us knew the trails, but many had experience wheeling. We made it just fine. The trails in Moab are well marked. And, with the aid of the trails books and a GPS, navigation is pretty simple. (except for the one time coming off poison spider. :D )

I don't think anyone is talking about not doing any trails together (vets and noobs). It's just that some trails are going to be serious challenges for those who've been there a lot. That is not a place for noobs (to wheeling, or to the unique Moab terrain) on their first trip.

...what he said! I will be available for one day at $200/ hour to guide on Hell's while the others run Pritchett.:D

I think it's important for the newbs to moab (but not newbs to 4wheeling) also to help the new newbs on these trails. I don't think that there will be a harder trail where a vet will not be along. There are enough of us that it won't be an issue.

For the new newbs: don't expect to run a harder trail without damage. It's always possible. Don't step up to a harder trail that you don't feel comfortable on. It will make you and others have a bad day. There is no preassure! Everyone wants the group to be safe and have fun. If your not sure on the trail, talk to one of the vets as to what to expect.

But above all, don't back out on the trip due to these bada$$ trails that wreck your vehicle. There are pleanty of scenic trails and easier trails that don't require ruining your truck. Hell's Revenge as an example can be a hard trail for some due to the pucker factor of being there your first time or attempting the optional obstacles, but i believe those with common knowledge of 4 wheeling and keeping saftey in mind can be one of the most exciting trails in Moab without damage. I have yet not to run this trail every time i have been threre. I love it!

As far as pressure goes to run an obstacle, there isn't any. I haven't been to the top of Lion's Back, and it's not because we conveniently break something right before going, it's because I'm skeeerrred....:o Frankly, I don't think anyone's ever even mentioned it. Very cool.

For those that don't know, you better reserve a room soon. The Gonzo is booked, but I know someone who got a reservation today because of a cancellation. The Ramada is right next door. Some have rented a house before. With a few people, that's about the least expensive route.

If you are interested in camping I can give you some info. I camped the whole time I was there many eons ago, when I was a wee lad (2003). It was late october early November. The campsites in Arches park are lush, I didn't camp there but did check them out. They have full facillities so its camping-ish, or camping-like. Bathrooms, showers, sinks for doing the dishes all just a few yards from where you camp. I imagine they are a bit pricey as campsites go and you definitely want to reserve well ahead. You will have some amazing scenery there, about 15min from downtown moab, and I also knoww some really cool trails in there you can drive. If you can find the pics from my Moab trip on here you'll se them, amazing geography and a little different terrain than the other Moab stuff.
I camped in the state campground which is up behind lion's back. Nice sites, toilet facillities a short walk from campsites. You need to store your own water there though. A couple 5 gallon containers and there is a gas station at the bottom of the hill into downtown to fill them at. They are super cheap and you can roll out of bed and be at the trail head of hell's and fin's in 2 minutes. You can get to the gonzo in about 5 min. to knock down Kens door and use his shower :dancingbanana: or bring a camping shower.
I met a couple who did the White Rim trip they had a real decked out Landcruzer with all kind of expedition gear to do the trip (since you need to bring everything you'll need) it looked awesome. They said the scenery was amazing the driving is not super technical but you'll be along some hair raising cliffs. If you need any other info just ask, I'll be glad to offer up what I know.

I would be willing to lead or follow, it does not make a difference to me.

Two major parts on the trail should be interesting. They do have bipasses.

Tilt-a-whirl and Easter Egg Hill. Tilt a whirl (according to the book) leans you sideways on a downhill section and Easter Egg may take out a rear window.

Looks like fun though. I'm suprised we haven't run that one yet.

Ok, I'm thinking of finding a salvage H2 and dismantling it and loading the major parts in my enclosed trailer and bringing it all to Moab.

Who wants to chip in. It will be sort of a Co-op. If you chip in now you will have first access to replacements from it should you need it while on the trail. If you don't chip in, you would be required to pay full dealer retail price for the used replacement part if you wanted it then IF the Co-op members decide to allow you to buy the part.:giggling:

Those in the Co-op would pay for a new replacement at wholesale cost at a later time to equalize their use of the used part and to make the part available in the future for the members of the co-op.

It may not seem interesting to you guys, but a previous report (Tailings Pile Seepage Model: The Atlas Corporation Moab Mill, Moab, Utah, January 9, 1998) prepared for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by Oak Ridge National Laboratory/Grand Junction (ORNL/GJ) presented the results of steady-state modeling of water flow and subsequent discharge to the underlying groundwater system. At the request of the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), this model was expanded to evaluate the impact of drainage from the tailings pile in addition to recharge from precipitation in a transient mode simulation. In addition, the FWS requested transient simulations of contaminant transport in the alluvial aquifer. Subsequently, NRC requested an evaluation of additional hydrologic issues related to the results presented in the Tailings Pile Seepage Model (ORNL/GJ 1998a) and the Limited Groundwater Investigation (ORNL/GJ 1998b DRTY/FN 124c).

a) General. Buried sand filters may be used, provided the effluent is discharged in accordance with the requirements of Section 905.110.

b) Size. Buried sand filters shall be sized as follows:

1) Residential. The sand filter surface area for residential property shall be 200 square feet per bedroom. Where a sand filter is used in conjunction with an approved aerobic treatment plant, the surface area of the sand filter may be reduced by 50 percent.

2) Non-Residential. All of the following shall be met when a buried sand filter is to be installed on non-residential property.

A) The surface area of the sand filter shall be designed for one square foot per gallon per day for waste with an influent Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) not to exceed 300 parts per million (ppm).

B) A sand filter with flows of 801 gallons or more per day shall have the effluent distributed into the sand filter by a pressure dosing system designed according to subsection (l) of this Section.

C) The sand filter shall be dosed 4 times per day with equal flows not to exceed the design capacity of the filter.

c) A single individual sand filter shall be used to treat flows from a wastewater source. Splitting flows prior to treatment or the use of multiple sand filters shall be prohibited unless subsurface disposal of the effluent is used. Where allowed, splitting of flows shall be done by pumps.

d) Minimum Size. The minimum size buried sand filter shall be designed to treat at least 100 gallons of waste per day.

e) Sand Filter Media. The depth of filter media shall be a minimum of 24 inches. The sand shall have an effective size of 0.5 to 2.0 millimeters, and a uniformity coefficient of less than 3.5. It shall be clean and free of clay and silt.

f) Alternate Media. Other filter media may be used in a subsurface filter provided it meets the criteria of subsection (e) of this Section and complies with the following requirements.

1) Is chemically and biologically inert.

2) Will support biological growth.

3) Has a hardness equivalent to, or greater than, that of sand.

g) Filter Media Cover. The filter media shall be covered with a minimum of 10 inches of clean coarse gravel or clean stone which is free of mud, silt or clay, ranging in size from 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The gravel or stone shall be covered with straw, untreated building paper, or other permeable material prior to backfilling. A minimum of 12 inches earth cover shall be provided. (See Appendix A: Illustration N of this Part.)

h) Distribution and Collection Lines. The distribution and collection lines shall conform to the requirements for distribution lines as given in Section 905.60(b)(2). The distribution lines shall be level, shall be located 18 inches from sidewalls, and shall be spaced on 3 foot centers. There shall be solid pipe to the filter media. The collection lines shall have a slope of 6 inches per 100 feet and one collection line shall be provided for each 10 feet of width or fraction thereof. The upper end of the collection line shall be capped.

i) Bedding Material. The bedding material for the collection lines shall be placed as shown in Appendix A: Illustration N of this Part, shall be clean gravel or clean stone which is free of mud, silt or clay. The coarse gravel shall range in size from 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter and pea gravel shall range from 1/8 to 3/8 inches in diameter. A minimum of 2 inches of coarse gravel shall be placed on the excavation before placement of the collection lines.

j) Venting. A minimum of one vent shall be placed on the downstream end of the distribution lines as shown in Appendix A: Illustration N of this Part. These vents shall be placed as close as possible to the corners on the downstream distribution lines. The vents shall extend above the ground surface and be screened with 1/4 inch mesh screen or equivalent.
