During the 1988 Beijing Defence Exhibition, AM General demonstrated an example of its M998 4x4 high-mobility multirole wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) to the PLA. The vehicle was reportedly left in China after the exhibition closed for further test and evaluation. However, at the time the PLA did not show much interest in the vehicle due to its expensive purchase and maintenance costs. During the 1991 Operation Desert Storm, the HMMWV gained high publicity in front of press cameras. Since the early 1990s the Chinese petroleum industry have purchased a small number of civilian HMMWVs through commercial sources. The excellent performance of the HMMWV has totally changed the PLA’s impression about the vehicle.
In 2000 Shenyang Aircraft Industry Corporation (SAC), one of China’s major aviation manufacturers, revealed its HMWWV copy known as SQF2040. Later in 2003 Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFM) also revealed its EQ2050, which is also based on HMWWV but with a redesigned front-look. Unlike the SAC SQF2040, which relies on locally made components, the DFM EQ2050 utilises some imported items. Although this would increase the unit costs compared that of the SQF2040, these parts are considered to improve performance.
