KenP 08-03-2005 11:27 AM

Make sure you use a shackle.

KorkedBatz 08-03-2005 11:28 AM

I've heard some people using the receiver hitch....that is why I was asking

PARAGON 08-03-2005 11:44 AM

It's too much trouble to use the hitch when you have the D-rings right there ready to go.

KorkedBatz 08-03-2005 11:57 AM

Great. Thanks for the help guys!!

redbulljunkie67 08-03-2005 12:20 PM

I have used a reciver incert with a shackle in the ball hitch hole, So I could pull on center.

Like one of these?

Always heard not to pull in reverse, any truth to that?

redbulljunkie67 08-03-2005 03:08 PM

Exactly like one of those Tower
I was told its best to pull in reverse lower gear and engine weight over the axle for better traction. (I don't know the amount of truth to that but it works)

That is certainly true. Reverse is the lowest gear.

That one is news to me. I understand the concept. I don't know if the physics bear it out in practice.

If you have an inexperienced person being towed or are in a dicey situation, it's always nice to be able to see what's going on.

PARAGON 08-04-2005 11:45 AM

Logic would hold that you would want as much downward force on all 4 pulling wheels as possible. With the weight of the engine up front and the natural tendancy of the squat while pulling at the rear, it only makes sense to pull forward when possible. Couple that with Phil's points on the stresses being exerted and it's better to use the rear.

Of course, situations differ and you might not be able to pull from the rear and might have to pull in reverse all the while turning the front end around an obstacle, etc.

On the ranch we simply shove the looped end of a strap or cable into the receiver hitch of the truck and then slide the hitch pin through it as long as it isn't some serious recovery. It's a fast, easy way tow.

tower 08-04-2005 12:16 PM

Great stuff, P & P. Thanks!

Texas Red 08-04-2005 01:09 PM

Recommend getting tow strap 3" wide x 30' long rated for 30,000 pounds. You can get 'em in a kit from http://www.recoverygear.com/ with all you need at a reasonable price.

HummerNewbie 08-04-2005 01:40 PM

Or you could see what our very own PhilD has to offer.

Why the strong emphasis on using shackles?

Because if you loop the strap around and through itself and pull it tight it cinches in on itself. It's a PISSER to undo. Plan on using a screwdriver, hammer and a lot of wrangling to get it to loosen up.

TXSUT, it also put unnecessary wear on the strap.

-Pete </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Well, it's actually really very simple. Either you tie a knot with the strap or you have to use a shackle or other method to "hook" the strap to the D-ring. The knot idea should be the last resort if nothing else is available.

are the straps better than chain?

are the straps better than chain? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>Yes. They have some flex to them which helps eliminate the "shock" to the truck if you have to snatch one. That's just one reason.

HummerNewbie 08-08-2005 10:18 AM

If one breaks, I would much rather have half the strap flying at me than half the chain

Nope, still in love. Just got back from Vegas. I got the highest award offered by National Ski Patrol. The National Chairman presented it to me. Blondie will be out here in a few days. Then we will fly back to Tx together, "Meeet the Parents" style.

Wish me luck.

Congrats on your award man, that is great. Good luck with the whole "Meet the Parents" thing.

Thank you H2N & Horace. She's got 2 Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, so I think I'm okay on my bathroom protocol. I'm just hoping they like me.
