Driving on Ice
You'll get a good laught at this if you live where ice one the roads is common.
We are getting our annual "WINTER STORM" here in San Antonio. Lasts a wopping 2-3 days but non the less, a mess around here because I, like most, are inexperiance in driving in these conditions. My question is, does airing down the tires help with traction on the ice? If so, what should I air down too? Thanks! |

No need to Air down!.....Just Slow Down! ;) |
Re: Driving on Ice
Chains are probably your best bet on ice, but i bet they're hard to find anywhere near the Alamo.

Re: Driving on Ice
Absolutely you can air down. 5 lbs is better than nothing, but if you want to flatten your tires out a little more then you could go down to 30psi. Be really careful you don't roll the tire off the wheel going around a corner and hitting a dry spot. Any amount you increase the surface area of your rubber on the pavement/ice=better traction.
p.s. please don't hold me responsible if you manage to pile it up in the ditch. K? thanks. And speaking of snow, we're getting a huge surprise snow storm this morning. this is great! :clapping: |
Re: Driving on Ice

Airing down on ice will not help and may make traction worse in the right conditions. You want the tires as narrow as possible so as to put more pounds per square inch on the ground. Do not lock in the 4wd, just keep it in all wheel drive , you want the wheels to free roll as much as possible. If you lock it in the tires will fight themselves on turns which will cause loss of traction . ONce you break traction , grab your ass and hold on. ;) |
Re: Driving on Ice
All I will say is:
Siped tires = teh win Ask the douches that tried to drag me off the line today on packed snow & ice. They all felt the wrath of 7500lbs of Siped Pewter Power!!!:fdance: :jump: |

Re: Driving on Ice
Yeah, it's not snow, it's ICE. Big difference. 15 miles west of San Antonio, it was up to 1/2" thick on the roadways. I don't care what country you're from, that's not driveable.

Re: Driving on Ice
Shee metal screws-ones with the square heads. slots go left to right in the center , up and down on the sides. Problem solved.

Re: Driving on Ice
Yeah, there really is nothing you can do in ice except put something on your tires that is going to break into the ice a bit and gain some traction, i.e., studded tires (not legal everywhere) or chains.
