I must confess... I know nothing about engines...

Lately, my engine is acting up. RPM goes nuts around 1500RPM. The RPM meter goes up and down and of course the engine goes nuts as well. It seems to happen around 40-55 mph which is what I normally do on local roads.

Does this mean that I have a transmission problem? Perhaps
Please help out a mechanically challenged person...
