With leaf springs, the will be inherent axle wrap. This occurs when the pinion whats to walk around the ring gear in the housing. The tendency is to have the pinion rotate upward for forward motion. With the leafs on top of the axle, the rotation of the axle is not limited in comparison to the leafs mounted under the axle. They both will walk, but it's the mounting under with the lesser of the 2 choices. That's why, when lifting most spring-over vehicles, lift is added with spacer blocks. This creates larger spacer between axle centerline and the center of the spring, the bigger the rotation arm.
