I had a 95 Chevy s-10 Blazer. It was notorious for a sticking EGR valve. Soujnded like a diesel but never stopped when the problem occured. Just ran rough as h--l. Finally cured it by getting a gasket with a screen in it.
Oh yeah, truck still running with 200k + miles on the old girl.
I think your mechanic may have been a tad off on his diagnosis.
